It makes more since to compare bundles then the actual devices. As stated here, Kinect and Move sales shouldn't be compared http://conflictinggamers.com/2010/12/03/kinect-vs-move-sales-shouldnt-be-compared-unless/

It also proves the typical American consumer commonly disregards reviews
as well. The kinect was panned so badly, I wouldn't even consider buying it in its current form.

To be fair, the move isn't that exciting atm outside of maybe the gladiator
portion and the ping pong in sports champions. This platform still needs time to mature.

actually, i haven't really seen any reviews for the kinect that were all that terrible. barring, of course, some of the shittier third-party software offerings, but as far as hardware reviews go, not so much.

To be fair, the kinect is a much more impressive and hackable piece of hardware. Much more potential to be had than a black wiimote with a snowglobe on the top.

Is that gaming potential? Because I see a lot of gaming potential wit the "black Wii Mote with the Snow globe on top." So original by the way.

Thank You! Yes, both motion controllers share some technology with devices already on the market... but both the Move and Kinect innovate in their own way.

My point is that if you want to try and downplay move by saying it's a wii mote with a snowglobe you can boil kinect down to being a fancy webcam.

@captainjy Non of these figures matter a lick anyway, both companies are reporting figures without a frame of reference, They both can claim to have sold 6 million units a piece but it doesnt tell you who's actually USING them and the only thing that can tell that is the number of titles sold, unless they want to confuse those numbers just as much by factoring "shipped" units as sold. So yeah The Move is a fancier Wiimote an the Kinect is just a 3d Webcam, big effing deal. Let's hear about the games.

@Johnnynumber5 is powered by cell Except that that's exactly what a move is. A more accurate Wiimote. That's it. The Kinect is something new. Sure it's not as good as it sounds, but it's still impressive technology overall. And I would be willing to bet that the next generation Kinect is going to be one of the coolest, scariest, most badass pieces of technology gaming will see until VR. The move is pretty much as far as that technology is gonna realistically go for gaming. Anything more and you'd be asking people to wear a mocap suit.

So, yeah, they're both cool in their own way, but the move doesn't really have anywhere to go.

Kinect is a fancy Eyetoy. Does that make it bad? No. But stop thinking it's original and innovative, because it's just an evolution of stuff Sony did last gen, just like the Move is an evolution of Wii (though Sony's been doing it since last gen too, technically).

A little research goes a long way. There are more than a couple ps2 games using eyetoy that look like last-gen kinect games.

Most people who talk trash about the Move, have probably never tried it. Once you play for a few minutes on sports champion or other good games, you realize that it is no wii.

Any idiot can make stupid arguments like
Kinect = webcam / eyetoy
Move= wii mote
but, for real... there is much more to be seen in each if you open your eyes!

If the only argument that its an "enhanced EyeToy" is that there were EyeToys game that you think looked similar, then you have a pretty lousy argument. The technology is fundamentally different. And the fact that there games in the past where you waved your arms around doesn't disprove that fact. The Sega Activator had games where you wave your arms around, and people don't say the EyeToy is an Activator ripoff, because the implementation is completely different.

Yeah, I think Kinect is selling really well because of the marketing, to be honest. Every other commercial I see is Xbox Kinect. I've seen nothing like this for Move. I think Sony want more of a Word of Mouth philosophy for this, which will make it move slower. Xbox is more "look look look at what we got go get it nooooow!" and a lot of people are trying it now. Once people realize that the Kinect is fundamentally flawed for a lot of the games that are the most popular on Xbox, the Kinect might be DisKinected ;)

A lot of the money coming in is from Dance games and the fitness game, 90% of the commercials I see are for these games. Beyond that, which Kinect games do you see advertised? Right now MS is making big bucks cashing in on these games, and they did a good job promoting their product. Sony can't advertise as much as MS in this case because their Move controller is similar to the Wii, the more they promote it, the more the people will ask "what is so different than the Wii" and a 30 second commercial can't explain the difference.

Long story short: MS can advertise the kinect with people dancing, Sony relies on word of mouth to spread the Move, bacon is good.

As far as what Move allows you to do in a gaming context its about on par with the eyetoy.. It has done nothing so far that couldnt be done on the eyetoy., the only thing it has allowed is for it to work better in all lighting conditions.

The Kinect hacks have practically 0 to do with gaming.. I cant wait for the kinect enabled game where the kinect is attached to a robot on the floor or to an airdrone or to whatever else it gets attached to.. Great it gives robots the ability to make out depth, but and this is the biggest BUT what does it do for gaming over and above what they eye toy has done ?

Explain to me what it adds that makes it so fundamentally different to any eye toy for gaming ? Now let me watch you stumble and urr and uhmm, because that is the truth right there in a gaming context it really adds very little..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWqfNTT2dts&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL -- Watch this in full, its pretty amazing

I also think this guy makes some absolutely brilliant observations, here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IFY-jul6TE&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

Again this time next year, when more games have been released for both platforms and they have both settled down will be interesting.. Microsoft can only hype the controller so much, it has to deliver on the hype. I cant wait to see your reaction and your comments then...

While I think Move is a very good product, I think Sony's mistake has been targeting it towards Core gamers. They're targeting it towards the section of the audience that doesn't really want a motion controller.

With Kinect, Microsoft is targeting the mainstream audience, the type that may not otherwise play games and they're seeing the benefits.

@Faenix Do you really think there are THAT many people buying Kinect for the purpose of hacking it? I would honestly be shocked if that accounts for even 0.25% of Kinect's sales.

It's marketing. Microsoft is targeting the right audience with their marketing. Their targeting their games and their marketing towards the type of people that are going to be interested in motion gaming.

Sony is trying to target an audience like you & I... The type that are going to be posting on a site like Joystiq. The majority of core gamers are very jaded and disinterested in motion gaming.

I think I speak for the majority of the people on this site when I say that I don't want to play SOCOM with a Move controller.

When you target an audience that's not interested in that kind of product, it's going to show in sales and it is.

@Johnnynumber5 is powered by cell Yes, they have made some casual push but in general, I'd say they're focusing more on the core gamer.

I've heard way more about "The Fight" then I have about that SingStar dance game.

Even when I see them show Sports Champions, it's usually that Gladiator Duel, something that's going to appeal to the Core gamer. It feels like to me that Sony has seen Microsoft and Nintendo go after the casual and has decided to go after the market that those two companies are ignoring.

Unfortunately, they're targeting a much smaller market.

it's definitely the marketing. i see Kinect everywhere while other than a couple commercials Move has been MIA. i will say that i do consider myself a core gamer and the thought of playing Resistance or Killzone with motion controls does kind of intrigue me. i'm just not really sure how you would even play something like Gears or Halo with Kinect. either way, MS is nailing it so far. i've heard a couple of the moms i work with talking about Kinect, i have yet to hear anything similar for Move.
