EA reveals some dark, dangerous details on SSX: Deadly Descents
87
EA wasted no time in getting up an official website for SSX: Deadly Descents -- or, as the cast of True Blood promptly renamed it during its reveal at last night's calamitous VGAs, Deadly Ascent (backwards snowboarding woooo). The page includes last night's announcement trailer and a few screens (posted in the gallery below), as well as a few intriguing details in the game's description. In short, it sounds like the worlds' first extreme sports/racing/survival horror game.
The site explains "players will explore the story of a team who seek to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet." Players will visit "the peaks of the Himalayas, where the air is so thin that riders have to descend through the death zone at breakneck speeds to keep from blacking out, to the solid ice ranges of Antarctica, where a sunlit line is the only survival option when temperatures drop 50 degrees centigrade in the shade." We wonder if you get bonus points if you finish the race with all your fingers and toes un-frostbitten.
The game won't defy the series' penchant for sweet aerial tricks, as the site explains "the first goal is to survive. The second, in true SSX fashion, is to look good doing it." Seriously, we're going to have a hard time remembering to do the latter while constantly fretting about the former.

@Colin "Sounds great"?
SSX meets Black Ops sounds great to you? Have you ever payed Tricky!?
There's no way we'll get fun music or extreme ubers in this world. There's a lot of outrage on forums about this reveal and I'm with it. Make this game if you want but as a spinoff or new IP. SSX means something to gamers and we've been waiting long enough to get slapped in the face with "Only macho games sell sorry lol."
So disappointed.

I'd be okay if they reverted back to how they did things with THPS2/3/4.

I didn't say great, I said it sounds neat. I was apprehensive about it, but I'm not outright disappointed. As long as it still has the SSX wackiness I 'm sure it'll be great. At least they're innovating and trying new things. I'd rather that then buying the same old game repeatedly.
And yeah, I understand it isn't Tricky. I have Tricky. I still play Tricky. I'd rather a great new game then a rehash.

Seems to follow the formula of a reboot: Just make it "darker".
I more concerned with the controls. Hopefully they don't EA Sport it with putting everything on the right stick.

@JONNNathannn in my opinion, SSX 3 and Tricky were the BEST GAMES EVER MADE. I was looking forward to this game, but now I think I've changed my mind and I fully agree with you.
We'll have to wait and see if this game actually convinces me, but EA definitely disappointed in this one.

@Colin Tricky was better than SSX3, IMHO.
I loved both for different reasons. Tricky was more frenetic and SSX3 was more chill.

SSX is about physics-defying tricks. SSX is about spending more time on rails than on snow. SSX is about snowboarding in Hawaii, Tokyo, and through the middle of cities.
This new game is trying too hard to be serious and phony-mature. They are throwing away all the kinds of people who enjoyed SSX. And for what, to try to get Call of Duty fans into a snowboarding game? Why?

@MyAbsolution I was sitting here wondering what kind of features they were going to put in. Maybe something like a dating / friendship sim that earns you new moves or some sweet new customizations. Maybe like a lodge with NPCs who challenge you to events or that you can swap items with.
Instead I get: "You don't go fast enough, you die from lack of oxygen."
I didn't think it was possible to completely destroy my love of SSX in one sentence but you proved me wrong EA. *clap, clap*

Not to sound like a bratty internet asshole, but I would be much happier if this was SSX4. Regardless, I am still excited to see the series make a return...it is long overdue!

@grizzly311
How can it possibly be considered a return when it's a return IN NAME ONLY? Because it just happens to be a snowboarding game?
I mean seriously. They should just make a new game. God forbid a company does that nowadays. No, they'd rather just whore out their old skanks first. Newsflash devs/pubs the more whores you hire the more you can pimp out. So stop messing with perfectly fine series' that don't need a reboot. Reboots seldom work out in the grand scheme of things.
Who the hell knows, you just might be able to create a new series to milk to death. Why dick around with a perfectly fine one?
I swear these companies are run by total goober idiots.

What I wanted from a new SSX is something they forgot about long ago. High speed tricks through a giant pinball mall in tokyo, or a snowed in metropolis, or even an iceberg off the coast of Hawaii. This sounds exactly like the reason I stopped playing SSX.
Oh well, maybe Jet Moto will come back... I missed the days when games were allowed to be games...

The video game industry IS trying to be more like the movie industry, for better or for worse.
I'll give EA the benefit of the doubt, as it does sound like an interesting concept... Perhaps it isn't what you'd expect from the "SSX" name, but is it so bad for a franchise to try new things?
I mean, take Mario for example. He's done freaking everything. While some are more loved (Mario Kart) than others (Mario Party), Nintendo hasn't stopped trying new things with Mario, while still doing the "traditional" Mario game (New SMB, SMG, etc.).
Or maybe Resident Evil? Sure, there was a bit of fuss caused by the series' shift to a more action-oriented game (RE4/5) that strayed from its survival roots, but it was still a great game (well, RE4, at least; it was one of the best games for GCN/PS2/Wii).
Or, hey, Megaman. While you got your traditional platformers (classic/X/Zero/ZX), there's the adventure-focused Legends (which a lot of fans have clamored for a sequel for years), or the action-RPG Battle Network/StarForce (which... has very mixed reception).
Ultimately, yes, any of these "different games" could have been done as a new franchise, with the same gameplay (recall that the original attempt to develop RE4 became DMC), but publishers/developers do like to try new things with an existing brand. Perhaps as an experiment, but more likely for the sake to garner more sales from a known, tested brand, than an unknown one.

I hope the people over at EA pay attention to the uproar about how terrible and ill-conceived this reboot is. Maybe they'll pull a Sucker Punch (where they changed from the "New Cole" to an "In Between Cole") and listen to the fans and change this.
If they've got the mountains made and solid mechanics in place just scrap any "survival" elements and get some color in there and they've got the SSX we all want.

A complete cancellation of a horrible game concept in favour of a more traditional, well recieved one is a little different than reverting back to a bland character design over one that was just slightly less so.
