When we were youngsters, we wanted every news story delivered to us right away, piping hot on a silver platter. But now, as we mature, we're starting to appreciate the drawn out announcement. The ... art of the tease, if you will. A month ago, we learned of a GameStop listing for "Dreamcast Collection," allegedly due on Feb. 15 for $30. It was just the smallest sliver of information, the burlesque equivalent of gloves being slowly peeled off.
Then, in the new issue of Game Informer, we have Sega marketing VP Alan Pritchard's official confirmation: "We actually have a Dreamcast collection coming out soon." Of course, to continue our stripping metaphor, this is the equivalent of Sega pointing to the gloves on the floor and coarsely shouting at the audience, "Hey! Hey, remember when I took those off!? I did that! That definitely happened."
But hey, we're grown adults. We can wait.

Chu Chu Rocket for XBLA. Virtua Tennis 1 or 2 for XBLA. Power Stone 1 or 2 for XBLA. These games were made for intense multiplayer battles. LET'S SEE IT, SEGA!

The Dreamcast was pretty much a failure of a system with the exception of Soul Calibur, Jet Grind Radio and Crazy Taxi. I don't understand why everyone worships it so much. I guess it's just one of those things that everyone says they love because it's an "underrated gem", even though it isn't. I doubt many of you even owned one. I did, and I played PS2, like everyone else.

Add Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Shenmue, Chu Chu Rocket, Power Stone, Space Channel 5, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Samba de Amigo, and Virtua Tennis to that list.
Oh, and the best ports of Quake 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. And it was the first truly online system, way ahead of its time. For its timespan, the Dreamcast was an awesome system.

The system was massively popular when it came out. It was more powerful in many ways than the PS2. It had a shitload of hit games, many to this day are still around (Crazy Taxi, ChuChu Rocket, Jet Grind Radio). It had a good controller, a solid amount of accessories, and was the first US console to have a built-in modem, and support for a broadband adaptor, allowing for online play out of the box. You could also buy a VGA adaptor allowing you to hook it up to a computer monitor, and get high-resolution graphics. The GD-ROM's the system used had massive amounts of data storage for the day, 1GB compared to CD-ROM's 650MB.
Combined with Naomi-based arcade machines, you could get near-perfect arcade ports. And combine that with many arcade ports. Only a few systems can you think of where almost every game was a hit, like the Nintendo 64.
The system failed due to lack of advertising. Sega basically didn't advertise it. And the games less so. You might get a TV commercial for the system, or a magazine ad, but they didn't do anything else. With the PS2 and the hype, it overshadowed the Dreamcast eventually. Sega could have fought harder, but they threw in the towel. Had the system recieved more advertising, it might have ended differently.

Yeah it was a failure, but for what it attempted to do it's hailed as a trail blazer.
If I recall it was the first console that had any sort of online connectivity. Basically everyone took Sega's idea and did it better. The games on Dreamcast were awful upon release. Outside of the first Sonic game, House of the Dead 2, and Madden 2k I don't think I ever paid for another DC game. I did play Resident Evil: Code Veronica, but the dreamcast controller didn't lend itself to playing that game. After Expendable, I was done with the system.
At the time I hated the console. However in hindsight, it did lead to some changes in console gaming.

The reason why Sega stopped making consoles is because they had already have several in a row fail.
Sega CD, while selling nicely, was still a failure.
Sega 32X, complete failure.
Sega Saturn, failure in the US. Was never meant to be a 3D system, was meant for 2D. After Sony released the specs on the Playstation, they added in some 3D hardware before release, that's why the Saturn doesn't do 3D very well.
They had lost money for years. This wasn't just a "This console sucks, let's stop making consoles altogether", it was a years-long money draining thing on them.

I don't know what games you are talking about, if you got different ones that us, but the launch games for the Dreamcast were considered some of the best (Power Stone, Hydro Thunder, Sonic Adventure, Soul Calier, Ready 2 Rumble, Marvel vs. Capcom, House of the Dead 2) and is one of the strongest launched ever.

Dreamcast was a fantastic, revolutionary console. It had so many original titles, the likes of which we may never see again because many publishers are not equipped to take those same risks today.
I loved my Dreamcast--and that's coming from a staunch Sega hater! I can't tell you the countless hours I put in to Power Stone, Toy Commander, Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi.

In my mind's eye, these are why the DC failed:
56K modem. Broadband was still about a year away, and it was an admirable feat nonetheless to include the 56K modem free. I remember that being huge news back then, since Sega was originally going to sell it separately. Thing was, 56K didn't seem fast enough.
VMU's. Great idea on paper, but poorly executed and with very limited support. Screen wasn't backlit, a bad move. Battery maintenance was also an issue, and did we really need to have dual slots on each controller?
Rumble add-ons. Players had to buy these as peripherals, taking its cues from the N64 at the time. When really, it should have been built-in. They should have gotten rid of that second VMU slot and integrated the force feedback there instead.
Controller design. Its handles encouraged hand fatigue, triggers pinched players hands when pulled, lack of a second analog stick, and the connection cord came out at the bottom of the controller.
Vulnerable to hacking.
Media. The discs weren't that great, especially when players could hear the drive grinding away while reading. Gave the console a really cheap feel.
With all its faults though. ultimately the console did see some great, and in some cases, innovative, titles. I certainly played the hell out of most of them. Skies Of Arcadia, RE: Code Veronica, DOA2, NFL 2K, PSO, Soul Calibur, Powerstone, Grandia, Quake 3 Arena, Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, and SF Rush 2049 just to name a few.
And I think they are still fun to play to this day, as do probably most everyone else who owned and played one back in the day.

Hopefully it includes the already-confirmed Space Channel 5 Part 2. I'm definitely getting that, but this way I don't have to clear out space on my hard drive which only has about 100 MB free.

Independent developers are still making new DC games today.
Granted, these aren't endorsed by Sega, but prove that the console is very much alive

They could fit a hell of a lot of games on a Blu-Ray of course. As someone who hasn't played much Sega over the years, it would be great to taste a part of gaming history many others seem to hold so dearly in their hearts.

I think they had a 1Gb disc for the Dreamcast, a lot of games would fit on a CD with no issue (I knew people that y'know..).. could easily get about a dozen games on a 360 disc (6.6Gb ceiling) - Not decided yet which console I'll consider it for til closer to the time

Indeed it is and that's why I won't be buying it. It's just like the Genesis collection. You buy the disc, rush home, throw the sucker in thinking you're going to relive hours of your youth only to discover that it's about 1/10th of the fun.
If you really want to experience these games as they were, buy a Dreamcast and the originals, plug it all up and enjoy.
