It's amazing what tech can do these days, but it still has a hard time with voice recognition and voice-to-text stuff.

This is truly impressive.

And I wonder if this kind of thing can eventually be implemented into things like Home, or mutliplayer FPSs.

I think Kiniect might be capable of this kind of scanning, though the Move has superior resolution if I recall. I'd love to see both attempted.

Even if it doesn't look quite as awesome as this, I'd love it.

Oh wait. People would take pictures of their naughty bits, wouldn't they? Sigh.

Nothing currently on the market for consumer use would be capable of this. While the PS3 and 360 might be capable of face recognition they're not high enough resolution and they only have so much range.

@Dustin F 360 degree of cameras, not just one camera in front of you; now what they would do is have a video of you in comm display which they've done for games like c&c... they should at least make your avatars lips move with the sound inputted from your mic, that would make a cool realism for FPS multiplayer, who cares if the lips are off here and there anyways.

I meant something like this, rather than this amazing tech right here.

I guess I was imagining someone standing in front of the camera, and then rotating their head around. Or even their whole body. Even if the resolution was much inferior to this, it could be an awesome way to have an avatar, if the system was intelligent enough to know what is what.

But then, some pervo would ruin it for everyone, I am quite sure.

To me it seemed like they were over-acting in some parts just to show the face recognition technology. Still, very impressive.

Though to give the actors credit it would seem very unnatural acting in that room.

Yeah, it's kind of like when movies first entered the age of the "Talkies" (Singin' in the Rain has some great examples of this.) I'm sure they'll find a balance once the technology moves out of the "holy crap look what we can do now!" stage.

I think the nature of this game might have something to do with it. If the player is supposed to know if a person is lying, the actors have to overact in a way to make it, if not obvious, at least noticeable. If it was to realistic, then a lot of people might not pick up on it.

Um, yeah. "The Jazz Singer" was the "first" talkie, released in 1927. "Singin' in the Rain" was released in 1952.

Singing in the Rain is set during the times 'talkies' started being made, and has some funny scenes with actors with bad voices and misplaced mics. Thats why Singing in the Rain was mentioned.

Honestly Mass Effect's facial and voice animations were already the best around as far as I am concerned. So its not like they'd step up from a mediocre position. But yes, this will be good to see in other games.

What Mass Effect really needs is new body positons rather than the:
* lean to the side
* fold my arms
* raise both forearms while talking

... positions :)

@Misfit Toy I think uncharted's are the best in the industry. They use motion capture for the body but the face, lips and eyes, are all done in key frame animation and it is phenomenal.

Thing is, Uncharted was made specifically for PS3; therefore, it was easy for them to use. This is a multiplatform title. The fact that Rockstar can make a game look this good regardless of which platform it's on shows how good they are & how they are moving up the ladder in their games.

This LA Noire is the first game Ive seen with facial animation to rival Mass Effects. Of course I dont really care about the concept or premise so chances are I wont buy the game, but the technology itself is very impressive.

Wow, this is amazing! It's tech like this that will elevate video games into a more respected form of media. There is a disconnect in terms of character and story because of the dead-eye doll-like characters in most games. Most people look at them and can't take them seriously, even if the story is top notch. Can't wait to see other games adopt this tech, provided Rockstar doesn't own it. If they do, hopefully they will licence it out.

Also, I didn't know John Noble was in this game! Even if it didn't look amazing I would buy it just because he's in it.

Very keen observation. You'll be interested to know that the reason he sounds like Jim is because it is. Andrew Rothenberg is the actors name. I didn't do much research, but just look at a picture of Rothenberg and this character in the game, they are clearly the same man.

Ohhhkay. Uncanney valley? Right in the middle, there. Right at the very deepest, darkest, coldest point of that creepy valley, where you sometimes feel like you're looking at a real person, and then suddenly notice something off and go "oh jesus christ".

This sometimes feels like someone's been sticking severed talking human heads onto stiff plastic animatronic puppet bodies. Highly unsettling.

Impressive though, and for the first time, I feel from here on out we're gonna be climbing upwards again.

Depends how focused someone is on the idea that they're pioneering this new facial capture technique, which appears to be the case in a lot of places I see mention of it.
