UDK out for iOS, Epic demonstrates with Jazz Jackrabbit [update: video!]

The December update for the Unreal Development Kit is available, adding support for development of iOS games in Unreal Engine 3. To help you get started, the latest version includes the full source code for Epic Citadel (along with another new castle map), so you can figure out how those impressive medieval landscapes came to be.

To further prove what's possible with the engine, Epic put together a technically impressive twin-stick shooter starring none other than Jazz Jackrabbit, star of Cliff Bleszinski's 1994 side-scroller of the same name. Check out screenshots of this proof-of-concept game in our gallery. Epic told Joystiq that it's currently just a demonstration; the company doesn't have plans to release it.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is one of my favourite platformers of all time. Cool mechanics and a level/script editor + pretty active community (for 1998 anyway) = pure awesome.

Me too! It was fun and pretty and hilarious. I remember trying to get roms of it a few years ago but they all seemed to run at triple speed for some reason.

Never played (or heard of) Xargon, gonna have to check it out.

I too enjoyed Jazz Jackrabbit and Jill of the Jungle - however, in Jill's case, it was mainly when she was climbing vines :)

Am I the only one who thinks this doesn't look good at all? Sure doesn't look impressive to me, but rather like some cheap cash-in release with amateurish art content. I know it's a proof of concept, but for something that comes with an Unreal Development Kit which already comes with Citadel stuff, I'd say this is rather a turn-off than showing off what awesome things you can do.

So we're getting Dare to Dream in the Unreal Engine, yes?

...yeah right. But a new Jazz Jackrabbit could be pretty sweet.

How about a link? I guess it is easy enough to find.

The UDK runs on Windows -- I thought iOS development had to happen on a Mac, how does that work?

Man, I remember playing Jazz Jackrabbit on our new family computer: 166mhz Acer Aspire! OH YEAH

Holy cow! Now that's a game I thought I'd never see again.

I have to admit, as an extremely dorky preteen I sent floppy disks of my pixel art to Epic trying to get a job. For some odd reason, it didn't work.

They can't show that and not expect people to want them to put that game out....
