@tenacioustoaster

I know it. I already had an amazing list of day one purchase games coming out in 2011, and in the last hour I realized I hadn't even added Project Dark and Journey to the list yet.

@PN04

It's not that I don't know what it is; I was questioning the spelling. My fault, wasn't clear.

Well, seeing as they were talking about it, I think it's Ben's.

For shame, Ben.

I really enjoyed Flower, and this game looks like it's going to be beautiful as well, can't wait for it!

Is it online only, or any chance for local co-op? I suppose from a design perspective, local could have the same drawbacks (or more) that voice chat does. It just seems like it would be a cool experience to play through with my wife or kid.

Explain why it wouldn't work in split-screen.

@Courtney

Split-screen wouldn't work because you know the person sitting next you. You can talk to that person, share ideas with each other. You already have the trust built up with this person and the journey together won't have the same impact.

What they're trying to do with this game though, they're exploring how 2 strangers who can't communicate or see each other but have to stick together with a shared goal behave. Imagine building a bond with a stranger who you can't see and never will...doesn't that fascinate you?

I was only slightly excited for Journey before the debut trailer, but after seeing it, I'm extremely excited. This is one of those games where I don't need to see another piece of media until it launches, because I don't want to know anything else going in.

I'm glad there isn't any voice or text chat (wouldn't want Leeroy Jenkings ruining my experience after all) but I'm a bit less enthusiastic about the idea that I can't play with friends. I guess a matchmaking system wouldn't have fit thematically, but this seems like something that would be a cool experience to have with someone you actually know.

2011 is shaping up to be every bit as great as 2010 as far as video games go, and this unexpected gem is the icing on the cake for me.

@BananaBoat

I get what you meant but think the whole point of the game is to share the experience with a total stranger, which is really cool. Playing with friends seems like it would take away what makes this game special, to me anyway.

i really appreciate thatgamecompany's artistic vision and how they are able to translate that into a memorable gaming experience (flower more so than flow). i'm totally stoked for this "soulful" experience. it's a good thing their contract with sony expires soon--more people can also appreciate the unique angle with which they approach the artistic and mechanical aspects of game design.

I don't know about that. If it wasn't for that very contract, Flower wouldn't be what it is today. Thatgamecompany announced that Flower was only made possible by the cell.

So glad there's no voice chat. That would ruin the game for me, seriously.

...Well, I guess Journey's audience would probably be a bit more mature than the kids who play multiplayer shooters and mindlessly spew profanity like they have the world's worst case of tourettes, but still, I don't even want that to be a possibility.

Journey looks fantastic, and I think the intentional omission of matchmaking and voice chat from the game is really to its benefit. I can easily see that a game like this would be ruined by those things. I especially love the whole idea of wandering this vast desert expanse and not knowing when or if you're going to meet someone; and then when you do, you're both complete strangers who can't identify or communicate verbally with eachother and that special element of mystique is still intact. Its a very pretty game, too.

This game more than anything else makes me want a PS3. I wonder what the goal at the mountain is supposed to be.

Thanks to Jason Chen and his team for producing games that are different and not about destroying everything in site. (though that can be fun also)

I love the premise here and the aesthetic is just...makes me think of just how encompassing this journey will be.

Sucks, though, that it's online only, for my internet is super craptastic and therefore, I don't think I'll be able to enjoy this game.

"Pretentious" or not, I'm very intrigued and interested by both the game and the intentions of thatgamecompany to make the journey filled with emotion. I'm just hoping they're able to execute on that intent, because if they don't, most of the reason to play that game will fly right out the window. Evoking emotion via games especially is easier said than done.

Awesome concept. I think they hit the nail on the head - the only problem with online multiplayer is, um, other players - and if there's no way to directly communicate, and preferably they've reduced the general ability to be a jerk too, that's a big plus.

of course I do own a wii, where not being able to communicate with other people online is completely standard. but i think it's a better idea when done on purpose. :)

I am perfectly okay without voice chat (no headset for my PS3 yet anyway), all I ask is that this game is every bit as beautiful and intuitive as Flower was.
