Dungeon Defenders delivers Unreal Engine to Android next week
24
Will Unreal Engine be able to take over the Android sales charts, much as it has on iOS with Infinity Blade? Trendy Entertainment hopes so, as it plans on bringing the first Unreal Engine-powered game to Android phones next week, on December 23rd. Dungeon Defenders: First Wave is a tower defense-RPG hybrid that our own Mike Schramm described as "fast-paced, complex and, at times, utterly overwhelming."
Dungeon Defenders is already available on iOS for $2.99, and we're assuming the Android version won't differ significantly. If you're wondering if the game will work on your Android device, check out the system requirements after the break.
Basic Requirements:
512 MB RAM GPU capable of OpenGL ES 2.0
Android 2.1 Eclair
800 Mhz CPU or greater recommended
SD card with at least 400 MB free storage
Specifically Tested Compatibility List:
All Tegra 2 Based Devices: Fully Compatible
Nexus S: Fully Compatible
Samsung Galaxy Tab: Fully Compatible
Samsung Galaxy based Cell Phones: Fully Compatible on all with 100 MB RAM free
Droid 2: Fully Compatible
Droid X: Fully Compatible
HTC Evo 4G: Fully Compatible
HTC Incredible: Fully Compatible
myTouch 4G: Mostly compatible, have some occasional stability issue
T-Mobile G2: Fully compatible
Dell Streak: Fully compatible
HTC Desire: Fully compatible
Nexus One: Fully compatible

Instead of another tower defense game I'd love to have a turn based strategy game for my phone. Advance Wars would be perfect.

Looks good, albeit a bit cluttered and confusing. Especially on my Galaxy S, I can foresee a bit of confusion with all that going on.

I have a Moto Cliq. I'll barely be able to run the video of this game!

FYI Joystiq: Infinity Blade is number 10 of top grossing apps. Not the success you are reporting it as. Moderate success but a complete failure when put up against the likes of Angry Birds.

suppose it depends on how you define success and failure... it may not be #1 but it costs 6 times more than angry birds... and to their credit they also made it universal rather than split which will actually cost some overall sales numbers (though should increase them for each platform individually...)
Angry birds is fantastic, as is Infinity Blade, but graphics don't make a game better or worse than other game as a whole package, and infinity blade is a gamers game, angry birds is a casual friendly title, very different markets and number of total people that will be interested in them etc...
hats off to both devs.

Infinity Blade is the 10th highest grossing app and it's been available for just a week or so now, and you think its "moderate success" deems it a failure by comparing it to an app that's been available infinitely longer at 1/6th the price.
Right.

Every time I see this game I want it more. It's supposed to be out on XBLA and Steam, but I've yet to see anything.

Well, that's what comes with working with a more open platform: it's going to be used on stronger and weaker hardware. Plus, older phones aren't going to work well, either. The latter isn't any different with iOS, just ask owners of first or second gen iPhones and iPod touches, and how they get shafted by newer games/apps or features (i.e. Game Center).

Pretty sure WinPhone7 is open but less ... fragmentation-prone. I suppose it depends on your definition of open. Do you mean Linux open? Or Windows open? Because any company can build a PC with Windows on it. Or Linux. But not Mac OSX. However, you're not allowed to compile the Windows kernel...only Linux allows you that (of the three).
I wonder which method will turn out to the be most dominant?

It has nothing to do with being more "open." I hate the over- and misuse of that word in relation to Android. The only reason we have all of these system requirements on Android is because Google isn't the only one making phones on the platform. Open source or closed source, it would still have the same requirements list.
The same would be said if Apple started licensing iOS on other devices. It still wouldn't be open source, but we would start seeing the same exact system requirements.
open source /= multiple manufacturers.
