Chrono Trigger coming to Japanese mobile phones, we arrive at the future
40
We're almost certainly approaching the apocalyptic future portrayed in Square Enix's best game ever, Chrono Trigger, as evidenced by the fact that the time-traveling epic RPG will soon be playable on the thing you use to make phone calls. A teaser site for a mobile version of Chrono Trigger has been uploaded in anticipation of Squeenix's Jump Festa 2011 presentation, revealing zero details about the project except for its Spring 2011 launch window.
It's far too early to guess whether the cellular iteration of the game will come stateside, though we imagine it would do quite well on the App Store circuit. We know we'd certainly buy it -- then, we'd send the phone back through time to ourselves in 1995, and watch our heads literally explode.

Is it wrong to have a boner after reading this especially since one of Square's other forgotten masterpieces is on the iPhone Secret of Mana?
If it is I don't want to be right

What about that sequence we've been long yearning for? I was in a discussion the other day right here on Joystiq about how traditional JRPG's don't sell well outside Japan. In this same discussion, was mentioned how FFXIII sold around 6 million copies up to now and well... It wasn't a western RPG, but you certainly can't call that "traditional" JRPG either. I don't want my Chrono Break or whatever should they call it to feature only cutscenes and tunnel-like environments (in spite of it, I really liked FFXIII), but I'm sure they can come up with some different gameplay style to go with that. Heck, gimme a overworld map and a bunch of towns and dungeons and I'm settled (I've never grown tired of the traditional JRPG style, different from the rest of the world).
Yeah, today I'm being THAT guy. You know, the one who reads a post about yet another CT relaunch and bitch about a sequel.

@skyblaze No it means you play a stolen copy of Chrono Trigger. It's only abandonware if the company stops selling and Square re-released chrono many times.

@Ellimem I hate to take part in discussing the legality of emulation, but you missed a crucial bit of info.
It's still illegal to download the ROM of games not in the public domain, regardless of whether or not you own a copy of said game. What isn't necessarily illegal, is dumping the ROM yourself, from your own copy of the game, exclusively for your own private use unless doing so circumvents copy protection.
I'm not chastising or anything, but everyone always seems to overlook that. Just because you own the game, does not mean you are free to download or redistribute ROM files from it.

I've actually thought about that very scenario, Joystiq. I've always thought that if I had the power of time travel, I probably wouldn't use it to fix some world problem - I'd probably use it to take, like, a PS3 to the 80s and just completely destroy some kid's sanity.

You are right Griffin, this is the best Square RPG ever made. Sadly, I still have not completed it, but it is the only Square RPG that pulled me through the longest.

Why the hell can't Square release a REAL sequel to the best game they ever made? Can you imagine the rad paradoxes and subtle timeline differences that could be created using today's systems? Every game could be unique! Why, Square?! WHY!?!?!?

I very much enjoyed Chrono Cross. One of my favorite battle systems of that era.

Chrono Cross was a cross-dimensional spinoff, not really an actual sequel.

No, Chrono Cross was a real sequel. Not a sequel by conventional standards, but a REAL sequel, that took the themes and world of the previous game and spun them in interesting new directions, rather than simply rehashing what was already done to near-perfection the first time around.

@A Sandwich It wasn't a spinoff. It even revealed what happened to Crono, Marle and Lucca after the game, which upset many people as much as the gameplay changes did.

I'd imagine that the battle menus would be along the side, to keep from having to accommodate for widescreen while preserving the vastly-superior-to-the-original-setup setup of the DS version. Then again, would that same area be filled up when out of battle? I can't imagine what all they'd put there, so then you'd be going from widescreen to standard while in battle, so what part of a battlefield would they cut out? I guess the camera could just zoom it right; it's done that anyway.

Now that Square Enix appears to be binging on re-releases of this (deserving) game, it'd be nice to finally see it on Virtual Console. Playing it on a handheld-size screen just isn't the same, and new generations deserve to experience Ted Woolsey's work.
Oh, and of course, a sequel would be nice. But only if it's DONE RIGHT, which I'm not sure I entirely trust Square Enix in this day and age to do.
