It's a valid statement. The population only gets up to like 150k users during peak times, and I've seen as few as 20k people playing. Not very good for "the biggest game of the year."

@Prox Halo Reach still manages nearly a million uniques every day. Not exactly the same thing as nobody.

Besides, given that there's tens of thousands of people playing at any given time it's not like you'll have any trouble finding a match. There has to be only a couple hundred people, if that, playing TF2 online (360) and it's still easy to find matches without running into the same people over and over.

I'm not trying to say that "nobody" plays Reach. Nor am I claiming I ever have problems finding a match. I'm just agreeing that those numbers are surprising given a population that's only 15-17% of what you'll find on the top Xbox Live game right now. I'm also saying that it's surprising that a Halo game has such low numbers (relative to previous Halo games) so early after its release.

I'm pretty sure we're talking different points here. You're saying that the population of a given game doesn't matter as long as its players can reliably find matches (which I agree with). I'm saying that this specific game (Halo Reach) appears to be under-performing when compared to previous games in this franchise.

Unfortunately, any time you mention Halo Reach, Black Ops, etc. on this (or just about any other) gaming blog, your comments are lost in a sea of fanboy-ism. Whether that's due to a vast amount of "omg i luv reach!" comments or through downvoting because I'm not giving the game a blowjob, it's still a shame and can prohibit intelligent discussion.

Unfrigginbelievable requires 40 kills only in Multiplayer Matchmaking (meaning you don't fight Grunts but real people).

In Firefight (and Campaign), where you might fight Grunts and get killed by suicidal grunts, you need 1000 kills without dying to get the medal.

Just sayin'.

@slimshady: It just means about that many people did the "get a million points in fifteen minutes" Firefight thing. That would get you that medal fairly easily.

@Artemis Entreri

The only downside to the ranking system with Halo is that its not necessarily skill that gets you that rank (though it will get you there faster). Everytime I see someone who is a Field Marshal or Commander I just think "wow...you play a lot of Halo don't you?"

Otherwise, I do like that it is possible to keep playing and have fun rather than just hit that difficulty ceiling where you would just keep getting slaughtered to rank up like the old Halo days.

@Misfit Toy Yeah, it seems to take a little bit of the fun out of the ranking system. Performance during a match seems to have relatively little to do with how many cRs you get at the end.

At each rank (I'm Warrant Grade 3 so I get about 500-700 per Team Slayer match) you basically are guaranteed a certain amount of credits, so being a high rank isn't necessarily something I have tremendous respect for, I just imagine that to be at those ridiculously high ranks already some people have to have sunk a thousand hours into this friggin' game.

@noyesa Well the only way to get better is through practice so a lot of time spent in game will probably equal more skill. Especially the way the matchmaking system works.

And in those 5 days, many people who don't follow Halo news or check the weekly updates, but still find this information interesting, hadn't seen it. Not everything needs to go up the very second it's released to still be valid news.

6.82 million copies sold, compared to Halo 3's 11.30 million (according to VG chartz). Isn't that slightly disappointing considering how big this franchise is?

Not trying to troll here btw. Imagine I'm asking this in a kind, curios and inquisitive manner, as opposed to a brash, hurtful troll manner. ;)

But how long has Halo3 been out compared to Reach?
You can't forget to take that into account, as I'm sure there are people to this day buying reach... even more so now that Christmas is just around the corner.

@Pure Black World Tendency It's not like it's done selling. Those 11 million for Halo 3 are over three years worth of sales. Reach had higher first week sales, and is seeing the same rate of decline.

Look at ODST, it's sales have virtually doubled through 2010. Reach has already sold more than ODST's life to date sales in its first three months.

@Pure Black World Tendency They usually do, but you're talking about a quarter to half of all sales, usually not most of them.

To put this into perspective, Halo 3 sold 5 million copies between its launch on September 23, 2007 through November 30th, so it looks to me like they're selling similarly. Halo 3 went on to sell, like you said, 11.3 million copies, and I would say Reach is probably on track to do well.

The excitement around this game has perceptibly fizzled though, whereas Halo 3 didn't go away for a long time. Either way, if Reach has half the success of Halo 3 (which it is) it's a huge game.

Stopped playing once I got the last achievement for Lt Col.. I was bored way before then (by week 2 of playing)... you can only kill so many grunts before you lose the will and have to play something else, so I just did the dailies until that last blip.. took four weeks.. got the blue visor & started with flaming helmet

11 billion grunts isn't 1/3 of the total Covenant kills. The infographic says 24 billion Covenant kills, and 33 billion TOTAL kills (meaning Spartans killed in matchmaking). /nerd
