Tomb Raider dev seeking multiplayer developers

Among listings for a technical producer and a senior level designer at Crystal Dynamics on the forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot, two positions popped up that we didn't expect to see: "multiplayer producer" and "senior multiplayer game designer." Though no multiplayer of any kind has been announced for the upcoming TR game, the listings go a long way in confirming it -- the job descriptions explicitly say "Come and work on the new Tomb Raider," for instance. It wouldn't be the first time a game starring Ms. Croft contained multiplayer functionality, as this year's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light featured co-op play.

Crystal Dynamics is hoping to fill the multiplayer producer position with an individual who has "demonstrable project management experience," and can "take on a major production role in the multi-player part of an upcoming action adventure title." The senior multiplayer game designer position listing notes some potential info about what the game's multiplayer might have, cursorily detailing it as both co-op and "player vs. player." The latter position will also be "responsible for the overall multiplayer design vision for the game," so, uh, good luck with that, potential employees! A Crystal Dynamics representative gave us an official "No comment," but wouldn't say anything else regarding the listings.

Thank you! Games like Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and Bioshock don't/didn't need multiplayer...just like this game doesn't need a 4th reboot, or even another sequel.

@mywhitenoise Bioshock 2 didn't need to exist, the inclusion of multiplayer is insignificant when weighed against that. I'm sure we all would have been happy to wait until Bioshock Infinite to get our fix.

Otherwise, I can't think of a single game that has added multiplayer that has turned out disastrous. Maybe Assault on Dark Athena, but the list of franchises that have added it successfully far outweight those that didn't. Franchises including Ratchet & Clank, Splinter Cell, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, and even Zelda (Four Swords is brilliant).

@mywhitenoise First off, Assassin's Creed's multiplayer is awesome. It's not like the multiplayer is going to take away from your single player experience. Let the developers try something for once.

I couldn´t agree more with you, the problem with this is that everybody thinks multiplayer is a MUST for every single game, that´s NOT true. As i said before single player games are like a good book, is a personal experience, adding multiplayer is nothing but a cheap excuse to make the guys from Harvard happy because they think this is going to guarantee a best seller. Stop this non-sense, those "multiplayer on everything" ideas only take sources from the main game and end up being a stupid 3 minutes thing were the service is closed after one year of not so much fun, why nobody can see this??? better invest that time in TESTING the game instead of leaving that part to us.........

First of all, this isn't "once" this has happened dozens of times. Secondly it does detract from the single player game. Even if they have separate development teams working on it (Which they aren't really separate) they still share the same budget. Any money spent on a shoed in MP mode is a waste of money.

I'm too lazy to make a list of single player games with unnecessary MP, but there is a long list of MP graveyards.

YOU stop it. i understand completely that not every game needs multiplayer, but you say this every single time a game announces new multiplayer. your internet bitching isn't going to do anything. eventually they'll realize nobody plays it, and then take it out.

i love how gamers mouth off about what a game needs and doesn't need, as if its your $$ being invested in game development, or as if you know how game development works or just how exactly this game is going to play out.

So what, its having multiplayer. Is it tacked on? Maybe. Do you know its going to suck or what multiplayer modes are going to be? No. So you all need to S T F U (again) until this game is released, then we can break it down and tear into it like a bunch of babied, complacent, conceited, egoistic, egotistical, holier-than-thou, pompous gamers we have become.

and for the record i want to add that they said the EXACT same thing about Uncharted 2's multiplayer, how it was going to distract the devs from single player (my favorite line from gamers who know nothing of the game industry).... you know how that turned out?? FUKKING AMAZING!

For one, Dead Space 2 seems to have lost something since the first game.. and I would be putting it down to budget being spent on MP which it didn't need...
The only MP modes that have outlasted the single player for me are Horde, Reach Firefight & Transformers: War For Cybertron (the mode with the 3 capture points, and I only suffered that to get a platinum trophy during XP events)... MP just gets too boring too fast, that typically, I don't play after 10 matches (even Gears, Halo & Uncharted)..
The only way I'll be playing most of these modes is if I want to 100% the earnables.. and do that through boosting

If they can come up with a MP sneaking game like MGO but fix all of its faults and accommodate a wider audience, I'm all for it.

AssCreedBrohood and Uncharted 2 proved us wrong, maybe this can do the same. Co-Op I could definitely see as being fun, and I'd love to play an adversarial game with environmental puzzles.

Mmmhmm, loved UC2 mp, and well I haven't played HoodBroAssCreed I heard many enjoyed it.

@Blay I don't enjoy it. Uncharted 2 surprised me too, it feels like what Metal Gear Online should have been.

Brotherhood and Uncharted 2 are also followups to games that had good singleplayer in the first game. I think its a mistake to have single and multi focus the first time around.

We'll have to see how Batman Arkham City does if it has co-op. Lara Croft might be able to handle a decent co-op

Uncharted 2's MP was "ok".. the trouble with it was lag advantage for anyone living near the servers.. connecting to Naughtdogs servers from the EU results in low internet speed & high ping

I have never had any interest in the franchise. I think I look upon with the same disdain I feel for all those Koei button mashers. Even this reboot doesn't seem very enticing. Uncharted 3 is probably my third most anticipated game and I think it covers all the bases. What do you guys think? Has Lara's time come and gone? Is Uncharted the "top of the montain" (lol boob joke somewhere in there)?

They can co-exist. We all played two action-adventure games starring wolves four years ago and came about loving both, I don't see why we can't play two archeologically inspired capers starring grizzled adventurers. That this is a reboot of a rather lukewarm franchise that used to be great ... I'm willing to give it the time of day.

When all else fails, make your game less appealing...

Then again, I got super bummed about Uncharted 2 including mp and it is actually pretty damn amazing and fun. Then again, that is Naughty Dawg and this is Crystal D....like comparing Apples to poop....sorry Crystal D.

Please stop adding multi player to damn near every game. Single player games are fine just the way they are.

While multi player, good multi player, is nice when you have it, that does not mean you need to add multi player to every game.

From what I'm gathering from articles and such about this Tomb Raider game, Lara has some tribal adversaries chasing her down. Wouldn't mind seeing a multiplayer take on that, kind like a hide and seek type of gamemode.

I dont care what they put in the game, just fix the series eternally God-forsaken arse-focused crap-tastic CAMERA. Goodness the last TR I played gave me motion sickness within minutes. Blllleeeeechh

I don't know about anyone else here, but I have the Gameinformer and I love would I read about the Single player, and it seems like it'd be pretty cool of they souls incorparate some of that into multiplayer. P.s it's gonna be M rated

They're probably going to try and emulate some of Uncharted 2's success on the MP front. Mixing platforming + shooting can be fantastic when done right.
