@copa I think Harmonix will be just fine. Look at Dance Central for Kinect. Such an innovative title which is selling amazingly well too. Harmonix obviously has some talented people who have no shortage of ideas.

Oh and on a side note, Rock Band 3 is utterly amazing if only for the improved menus. Finally my wife and our friends can play it drunk without tripping over menus. When my weirdo wife needs a lefty flip, boom there it is.

Speaking the devil, I just bought Rock Band 3 today! Played a couple quick songs and am already in love with it. The community features on rockband.com are great also. GO HARMONIX! If anyone has the power to bring the music game genre back to full power, it's Harmonix.

@x RadicalAura x Their community features for the game itself are absolutely horrible though. No longer can you join someones band/game, or host your own game to have someone join your band, the pairing is completely random. You can no longer see your friends (or anybodies) custom artwork, and from what I hear the Wii version wont let you see anyone elses character period. Making a setlist is absolutely painful too since anyone can delete the songs you chose, and they can add 4 or 5 of the same song they want. This is all just online components of the game.
There are MANY things wrong with the single player details, I wont go into that much because a lot of the things wrong with Single Player can be patched, yet since the game has been out we've only received one that alleviated some game breaking issues.
For that, I wouldn't put it in my Top 10. Personally I think RB2 is the better game, and hopefully RB4 will be to RB3, what RB2 was to RB. I get my Pro Guitar today, I'm sure that'll definitely be a huge plus for the game, though.

I was done with music games altogether after RB2. There has been too much of a glut the past two years. Just tired of them.

Honestly, I was convinced that Joystiq would extend there GOTY list number to around 15. Seriously, look back at the whole year and you'll see so much GOTY material. I guess that's why they have The Best of the Rest, and then again, I still can see why they would choose to still use 10 spots--these are the games that absolutely stand-out, that ones that really captivated the minds.

Sorry, thinking out loud there. Congrats, Rock Band 3. You shall soon conjure my attention when you drop in cash.

"short songs, with keyboard parts, on the Rock Band 2 disc, from the 1980s."

This is one of the things I love about the new menus and sorting options. Though, I still keep wanting to use the Yellow fret where now I have to use the Orange while doing my searching. That change still irks me a bit but no big deal.

(also, nitpicking I know, but technically there are no songs 'with keyboard parts, on the Rock Band 2 disc') =]

Rockband has been a favorite of mine for some time. Once i stopped caving in to getting all the Guitar Heros Activision pumped out every year and stuck with Harmonix, and Rockband in particular, it revitalized my passion for the music game genre. Rockband 3 is the best of the best.

The keys are tough, Pro Keys anyway. But that's one of the things i love about it. It reminds me of the first time i picked up Guitar Hero. I had to start on Easy and moved up difficuties regularly. But it took awhile to get really good at Expert. Pro Keys are doing the same. Pro Drums are great too. I haven't tried the Pro Guitar yet, but being something new in a game i love, I'm sure I'll be playing Rockband 3 for some time. No hurry for Rockband 4.

God of War 3 took the back seat to - Rock... Band 3 ?

What is the world coming to?
Or am I just misinterpreting the intentions of the previous "Best of the Rest" post? What a joke. A handful of indie/ lo-fi games (which may be "charming") and, let's see... God of friggin' War #3...

I would play Minecraft or Super Meat Boy over God of War 3.

Before you judge indie games, give them a try. Just cuz they have a lower budget, doesn't make them worse than higher budget games.

I hate to bash Rock Band because it really is fun, I really don't see any difference between this & 2. Besides the obvious keyboard addition & an updated* soundtrack, this is just the same game with a different number. I mean, I'm not saying it's a bad game. Not at all, I'm just saying it's the same game for the most part. I'll probably get heavily downvoted for this but can someone really convince me to buy this over (a now cheaper) Rock Band 2? I really don't like how once great franchises are feeling the hurt because of a yearly (In this case half yearly) releases. Call of Duty was once phenomenal, & now everyone hates it because of it's year to year releases. Guitar Hero is already feeling the heat. Assassins Creed is getting to that point. It's not fair for us & it's not fair for our wallets.

Let's assume you don't include the new instruments, and/or pro modes, both of which change the game completely. Even pro drums is much different.

Rock band 3 fixed many things I disliked in rock band 3. They got rid of the drummer kicking everyone out of the song because they are banging away on the pads. You can rate songs so songs you don't like don't show up in random setlists. It now saves scores for all levels, so you know which songs you passed on expert vs medium. Drop in/drop out of songs. I could go on, but this post is long enough.

They kind of munged the on-line competitive modes, but as far as a solo/party game goes, RB3 is far superior to RB2. It's not even close.

Even without the new instruments, pro mode, and smooth user interface, he new Goal/Achievement system was enough to sell me on this being better than any of the previous iterations.

They got rid of the typical get-through-x-setlists / play-all-the-venues way to play the game and turned it into a gigantic RPG-like trophy earning bonanza. Wonders what having some progression in the game will do.

Well I was just coming from a party player perspective. I've played RB2 at a friends house & I loved it. I saw someone playing RB3 at Best Buy & it looked almost exactly the same. I didn't get too see all the other features that are new. I'm not an avid RB lover so I really can't appreciate all the features listed. I guess it has to do with how you play. If you play to have fun, it's not much of a change. But if you're a die hard fan of the series then you would really like all the extra features. Am I right?

@Prboi

It might depend on the group you play with.

In the RB2 days, I used to bring my rock band gear around to parties. Whenever people pick up the instrument the first thing they do is start experimenting by pushing all the buttons, or if you are the drummer, they hit the pads. So whenever someone is trying to find or start a song, the screen is jumping all over the place because people don't realize the red/green guitar/drum pads are acting as select/cancel buttons.

So finally you end up screaming, 'WOULD EVERYONE STOP HITTING THE *#&$#(@ BUTTONS'. to get order, which lasts for about oh.... one song. In RB2 only the primary instrument (aka me) does the main selects, the others just select their instrument.. Nice.

drop in/drop out is handy because if you have 4 players, and one person decides to stop playing, in rock band 2, you must quit 'the band' and the three remaining players need to resign in/select instrument/select characters. In rock band 3, the player who leaves just does 'sign out'.

Things like this aren't 'huge things' but they just streamline and get rid of annoyances that come up during party play. It's just easier for players to jump in, select songs, and jump out.

There's no reason you couldn't get RB2 first, and run with that for a while. The only major things you'll lose are the pro modes, harmonies, the new instruments, and the new DLC. And if you decide to go to RB3, you can always export RB2.

But I'd prefer it if you got RB3, to help promote the chance of a rock band 4.

Makes me think that if the current GH game is looked down upon and the new RB game is looked up on and i like the former then maybe i should check out the RB game.

Can you use the GH guitar to play RB?

nb4 the parade of "it's a rhythm game, so it's bad!" comments.

Rock Band 3 is everything all the good rhythm games have been building towards for awhile now. Plays so well, all additions so welcome and reasonable, it's really the ultimate sum.

Don't let Guitar Hero or your own inability to play them make you blind to Rock Band 3. This game is every bit of deserving of all the praise so far, and I'd go as far to say its rather underrated.

Your analogy doesn't hold water. Having a gaming system is a prerequisite for any of the games on this list. Having several hundreds of dollars worth of accessories isn't a requirement for most games.

I'm having a hard time seeing how it's a serious question, but the serious answer would be no, since it wouldn't work as a game.

But by that logic, all Move and Kinect games should also be automatically excluded from your consideration for future years as well.

@draffauf - If you were to purchase the game and no instruments, you'd have a very expensive coaster. Of course you need the instruments. They're the whole point.

Yes, it has an extra expense compared to other games (though I imagine the majority of gamers who would ever consider buying a music game own at least one instrument at this point) but that doesn't stop it from being the pinnacle of its genre one of the best games of 2010.

I didn't know Rock Band is totally unplayable without the accessories. Maybe it's because I don't play rhythm games.

I do think there is a difference when all the extras are required. For example, I bet more people would enjoy a game like SFIV if they had only ever played it with top-of-the-line arcade sticks. It seems like an apples-to-oranges pick for a top ten list.

Comparing this to Move and Kinect games is a bit of a stretch because those are platforms that will eventually support a very large number of games. Rock Band 3 sounds like a $300 game to me.

I can kind of see your point on Kinect and Move, if taken from the perspective of "lots of people will have either Move or Kinect peripherals so no added cost", but at this point of time there's also tons of people who already own a peripheral that will let them play Rock Band 3 (or any other rock kind of game).

So it being a $300 game is only accurate in some circumstances, and that's assuming you bought all the instruments, and not just one (which plenty of people do).

I guess in that case it may not be a top10 for you... but hey, if a top ten list isn't subjective then what can be eh

You can't separate rock band, the game, with the instruments.
The whole point of these instruments is to be able to pretend you are playing music by playing pseudo instruments. (or not so pseudo in RB3 pro instruments)

It's not unlike asking would DDR be considered great without a dancing pad. No, you don't NEED the pad, but it's the entire point.

People always do this big exaggeration that to play Rock Band you need to buy every instrument at once, and buy it every time a new game comes out.

For me, it's as though Rock Band 2 doesn't exist, the series jumped from 1 to 3. Not that 2 was bad, it just failed to hook me as much as 1 and 3. Rock Band 1 blew me away. I actually balked at spending that much on one game, but my kid begged and begged for her birthday. So I gave in and was thankful for months that I did.

I couldn't imagine that I would find the same amount of fun and wonder when we popped RB3 in, but they managed to pull it off.
