Lords of Shadow is my favorite game of the year and in a weird way I am actually proud to own that game. Bayonetta a distant second but wow was that game fun as well. A good year for those of us who are not FPSing our way through our lives.

@EazySCT You say it as if playing action games is somehow more noble. Don't be a prude it is embarrassing.

Loving Castlevania, but I'm only at the second chapter so far and I hope the game keeps it quality throughout.

Something tells me Minecraft will be on every "Best of the Rest" list. If so... why isn't it in the top 10?

If I had to guess it would be due to a consensus of there being 10 better games than Minecraft.

Because the game is not complete yet. It might be on the Game of the Year for next year though.

So now we know that Minecraft didn't make the Top 10.

With all the best of the rests coming before no1 announced, we can pretty much guess what direction the list is going to go.

@mrmobius Agreed. They'd better start releasing more of the actual Top 10 before the reveal is given away by what didn't make it (without the ordering of course).

Skipping cutscenes in Byonetta would be a tragedy. Almost as much as not making it the game of the year. Which, in fact, it was.

I'm a little surprised that Enslaved hasn't made one of these lists. It's not one of the top 10 games of the year, but it definitely is one of the good ones and should be given a mention.

@Uncle Jesse I bet 8 gill it does make top ten lists. Writers feel sorry for this game for some reason. I think it has to do with Ninja Theory, the strike out kings. I personally won't buy a deeply discounted Enslaved because the demo was dismal.

Castlevania LoS is not a Castlevania not because of the linearity, but because of the lack of creativeness seen in monsters, art and music. The gothic-pop-rock-techno feel present in the design and sound is lost. He is another generic LOTR clone. Not that the game is bad, but the FEEL is not Castlevania. And yes, i play them since NES.

ive said this a thousand times.. lords of shadow not feeling like a castlevania game to me had nothing to do with the linearity of the game.. i mean, the game was excellent through and through despite some minor flaws, but it really did feel a lot like its inspirations with a gothic theme.

castlevania was an action platformer, but if you remember the old games.. there really was never a focus on action outside of a boss battle. enemies were used as an obstacle to hinder your progression in the same way a falling platform or spikes would be used. i think thats my biggest "this isnt castlevania" gripe. i totally enjoy cinematic platforming, like what is found in uncharted.. but i honestly got tired of hanging from ledges.

lords of shadow was pretty much just go into a room of bad guys, kill them and gain access to the next room where you swing from hooks and hang from ledges or solve a puzzle so that you can go into the next room to fight more bad guys. like i said, not ragging on the game itself, but its pedigree wasnt evident for me due to that formula.

it would have felt more castlevania-esque if it had less hanging from ledges and more jumping from platform to platform that may fall below you or grow spikes. that stuff though? i could live without.. my number one thing was the combat. i would have preferred more enemies that went down in a hit or two instead of the rooms full of guys i have to combo and then roll out of the way of and combo more. one hit enemies sprinkled throughout the levels as im also platforming would have been a lot cooler than the game sectioning itself off.

imagine if 3d mario sectioned its gameplay off... after jumping on platforms for awhile (with no enemies in sight), you reach a room where you have tons of goombas and crap and you cant progress until you clear it. it just wouldnt seem right..

@shouryuuken: I agree with much of what you say about the game. There are many aspects of Lords of Shadow that felt unfinished to me. Exploring seemed more like a tacked on afterthought instead of something integral to the gameplay. It's as if they couldn't decide to make it completely linear and thought at the end "oh let's make it so players can go back to the stages they finished so they can do a little item hunting." The execution of the exploration in the game was rather disjointed.

As far as the combat goes, while in many aspects it was fun there just got to a point where it became a little tedious. I felt that some of the enemies were ridiculously more powerful than they should have been. I also hated the fact that Gabriel's magic wasn't more fleshed out other than being augments to the combat cross.

Overall I felt that Lords of Shadow had a lot of great ideas but lacked fine tuning. It's probably the first game in the series that I can't bring myself to want to replay again. Sad to say because it is my favorite game series. Maybe the next game will improve upon the first exponentially.

@shouryuuken

FYI, you don't have to beat all the enemies in every room to proceed. I'm only halfway through CH 2 and I've skipped several rooms full of enemies because I just didn't want to fight them.

There have also been plenty of pitfalls throughout so far. If you're looking for pitfalls of instant death and 3x lives for the whole game, those times have long ago left us.

In the modern gaming era, this has been easily the best 3D Castlevania game ever made. The N64 games were good efforts, but limited by the hardware and control. The PS2 games were garbage.

Honestly, I think LOS is the best you're going to get in a 3D Castlevania. The only things I would have changed so far is being able to control camera angles. Voice acting has been excellent (though I'm getting quite tired of Patrick Stewart's voice as a narrator. Everytime I hear it, all I can think of is "Shut tight the jaws of Oblivion!"). The story so far has been good. Level design is nice. Creature design has been nice. Atmosphere is excellent. It feels like a nice blend of the old NES/SNES era Castlevanias with a fresh coat of paint and innovation to bring it into the modern era.

@Crono141 i beat the entire game, there are plenty of rooms full of enemies you have to beat or a bunch of nagging enemies with one main guy you have to defeat.. either way, the combat is more in line with golden axe than it is castlevania.

there werent "pitfalls" that were relating to having to time your jumps hardly anywhere in the game, it was mostly "oops i didnt grab that ledge properly" and you fall to your death. most of the platforming consists of the prince of persia styled ledge climbing. nobody said anything about having 3 lives or anything like that.. its just that it seems that if anyone wants to make an action platform game these days.. they have to have you hanging from ledges and climbing stuff. thats cool and all.. but there were so many different platform games in the 16 bit era that contained traditional styled platforming. id love to see somebody tackle that..

yeah, i didnt really care for the story overall.. but i never play a castlevania for a story anyways.. its all about the atmosphere. i own every castlevania game except for rondo of blood and vampires kiss... it feels nothing like the 2d games to me. i realize its the best 3d castlevania, but thats not saying much at all.. it only has to be marginally good to be better than what we've had before.. although there are plenty of people that will defend the older titles for whatever reason.

i didn't like the Castlevania much because it's almost like i'm playing levels where at the end i get graded & a percentage on how much i found. i hated that. why couldn't it just be free roam or something

Because all free roaming 3D castlevania games have been garbage. This definitely feels like the old Castlevania 3 in its area presentation and atmosphere.

I'm I the only one that thinks that Bayonetta is a shitty game? Or is it really true that the ps3 version is bad? The amount of loading is horrible.

@MightySquirrel The ps3 version is the bastard version, it was port by Sega and the loading is terrible, they fixed it with the patch and you can install the game but overral, the 360 version is the definitive version to get. Even without the patch, Bayonetta is an amazing game! But it might not be your tea of cup.
