Normally I'd agree with you but as I type this message I'm suffering a terrible case of the runs after a bad burger. You didn't need to know that, but for some kind of cosmic justice I needed to tell you.

@wcarnation and just a ponderance - any chance of Civ 5 in this top 10? Or anyones? Doesn't seem like you guys are much in the PC gaming.

Can already tell Mass Effect 2 is #1.

I'd have to agree, Mortegro. Hearing it called a "gamer's game" takes it from mild interest to actual purchase. Well written, James.

I'm going to let you all peek into my soul for a moment. Feel free to downvote me into hell.

I don't get the love for this game.

Though, for those of you who 'do' love it, I'm glad it's getting some recognition. :)

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze

It's got a boatload of charm, reminding me of the time when platform games were king and the only FPS you could find were crazy insane action FPS on PC and the odd sci-fi shooter ported to consoles. The only military FPS games being insanely complex and mostly liked by our dads/uncles.

It's got that charm, and the indie charm. All those oddball games we've played and liked, coming together in a big celebration of what they are. The game its self is a celebration of indie success - tons of sales, tons of praise, its riding up there with the big boy digital downloads.

Then the gameplay its self - challenging, but rightfully so. It's a balanced and progressive challenge, and its a game that's simple to approach but difficult to master. A keen balance of timing/skill/practice. Never once does the game feel unfair, but never once does it feel like its going easy on you (until you replay the first 3 worlds after beating the game, of course).

Plus, it's just plain well made and continually supported.

All of these things are insanely refreshing in the current time period and just plain ol' fun for a low low price.

@wcarnation - I enjoy Super Meat Boy, but simply as a time waster. Technical excellence does not a great game make, and once we move past the "the mechanics work, so the game must be great!" mentality, games will improve. And I really, really dislike the juvenile humour in the game, which just isn't... anything interesting, that's for sure.

That being said, Super Meat Boy is a lot of fun, and for someone who's played a lot of platformers, it really is like the "ultimate test." It's certainly a good, fun game, but not a great one.

It's a platformer. There is nothing to "get" beyond that fact. You might not have enjoyed the SMB series as a kid either, no worries. Not everyone loves platformers, which is apparent as they are few and far between these days.

It's just a decent platformer, but this hype seems to surround any game of similar quality from an indie dev. I might think more of it if I could actually play it without constant glitches making me fall through walls and otherwise generally make me fail.

I dunno, get really high and let yourself get into the zone to try and beat it? I guess that would also raise the scores of the opposition though.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze Yeah, not only do I not "get" this game, I cannot for the life of me understand why Joystiq dedicates every 5th article posting about it. The coverage is definitely not balanced when it comes to this indie title. I'm going to go out on a hunch and say "payola".

That leaves 4 spots left. Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are clearly on the list. What's the fourth?

Alan Wake was just a Steven King masturbatory aid. Pac-Man DX however was incredible. We are still forgetting such greats as: Donkey Kong Country Returns, Fallout: New Vegas, Vanquish, Halo: Reach, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Persona 3 Portable, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Quest IX, Starcraft II, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Amnesia (a huge oversight by Joystiq's staff), Just Cause 2 was better than Red Dead, Valkyria Chronicals II, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, God of War III, Monster Hunter Tri, etc.

Alan Wake is far below on the quality scale compared to those titles alone. It better not make the top 4 or I've lost all respect for Joystiq.

Amnesia being one of the only titles this year in it's genre and one of the best this year period. I think Split/Second should be removed from the list honestly, there are far to many other titles that deserve the honor.

@Anticrawl joystiq loved the crap out of Alan Wake and a lot of commentors keep calling it GOTY. I would be surprised if its not at least at #2, it may end up being their GOTY.

I thought the game was repetitious and boring with almost every level being a run through dark woods fighting the same monsters but Joystiq obviously loved it and all its DLC.

It shouldn't be on the list at all.
It brings further evidence that all indie games get overrated by journalists so they can seem like they're still 'with it'. Kind of like someone famous who wears a t-shirt of an underground band.

From the review text it's clear joystiq is rating this game so highly because they can pat themselves on the back for "getting it".

The list comprises games that staffers enjoyed the most this year. The end.

The objective is not to post a list designed to instill agreement. It is not to impress anyone or to pat ourselves on the back. (I'm not even sure what that would accomplish.)

What we do welcome is discussion and disagreement. But instead of telling us why you disagree with this choice, you've fallen into the same trap a lot of review comments do -- oh, the problem is clearly with the selection method, or the people who chose it. They're just doing it to show off, prove a point, overrate indie games etc. All reasons that push out the obvious, obvious possibility: maybe someone liked the game.

@Ludwig Kietzmann I didn't say they didn't like the game. I was taking exceptions with the reasons for liking the game. The problem is some of us aren't hipster, we don't like a game better because we can be so proud of how we we're so cool for getting it. So you may like it, great, but as a piece of information to me it's not as useful because this likely isn't going to occur with me (not the least of reasons being because I don't play as many games).

It's not a trap, it's an opinion, just like yours. It's pretty funny you're as quick to condemn others for having crummy reasons for their comments (i.e. falling into traps) as you are for defending your own right to have an opinion.

Love this game but I won't downvote anyone who doesn't, to each his own. Now if I could just get past that final level. Btw when I brought my xbox over for the holidays I was surprised by my 5 year old niece asking if I brought 'Super Meat Blood' at the dinner table, lol afterward I played it with all the kids who are actually pretty good. I guess they remembered me bringing it over months prior.

Ok enough about me and my cool stories dudes

Glad to see the love for this in the top 10. I've actually burned out on it for a bit, those more advanced dark world levels are so, so brutal. I doubt I'll ever finish every level in the dark world, but I imagine I'll keep trying to many months to come.
