Ever since the device was first shown at E3, we've been under the impression that the Nintendo 3DS is too good to be true -- three-dimensional, portable versions of beloved N64 games? That's un-possible. The other shoe we've been waiting to drop might have just done so with Nintendo's recently released 3DS warning label; not only does it caution adults to stop using the device if they start to feel ill, it also says that children under six shouldn't use the handheld's 3D functionality at all, as it may affect the development of their poor, innocent eyes.
This isn't quite as explosive a story as the mainstream media will likely make it out to be -- 3D display experts have long discussed the possible repercussions the technology has on eyesight. The worry isn't that displays like the one included in the 3DS will actually harm your vision, but that the way it "tricks" your eyes into seeing 3D might impair the way you actually see depth, which is, of course, the coolest dimension.
Of course, there's no firm research confirming these worries, but Nintendo's playing it safe -- the 3DS' parental controls will allow parents to lock the device into 2D mode for their under-six progeny.

Little Timmy won't be able to play GTA until he's 7. What defence is he going to use in court until then ?

Good good, hopefully this will keep developers and their kids shovelware on the DS and DSi leaving the 3DS for quality titles.

"Their console days may be fast approaching an end (as we know it)"
I literally gave a flat "what" after reading that. Wii pretty much outsold both the PS3 and 360 this month by a wide margin, but I guess that could be considered "fast approaching an end" in the right mindset.

I said as we know it or knew it. Their consoles are no longer a major player in the market they brought back from the dead. They said themselves they don't directly compete with the 360 and PS3. Which is the truth. Sure I love my Wii but I'm not too blind to realize they are headed in a different direction than the other two game consoles. Perhaps though one could say they are the only gaming console remaining as we knew them because the other two are focusing heavily on multimedia (something I don't particularly care for). However Nintendo is always on top of their game, driving innovation and dominating the handheld market.

How was the Micro a failure? It was a limited release deal to stall until the new handheld released. I love my Gameboy Micro Famicom edition. I play it everyday along side my DSi. I got that baby for 25 bucks from wally world. Shoulda bought more than one looking back.

The same sort of warning has been showing at the beginning of 3-D compatible PS3 games since they emerged as well. The only difference here is that the 3DS is relying on its 3D effect to be the Next Big Thing that sells its new console. That doesn't bode well.

I don't think 6-year-olds should have their own game system.
Just saying that because I didn't get a Gameboy till I was 9...

First got a Gameboy aged 6, but only managed to get 6 games over the time I had it, as Pokemon pretty much dominated it once Blue came.

More like a warning to not let kids under 6 play due to a permanent brain washing by Nintendo, ultimately bringing a new Fanboy/girl into this world.

So 6 year olds shouldn't play 3DS, but taking them to a movie in 3D is fine....got it.

I'm not saying NIntendo should be responsible....What I'm saying is I don't understand why Nintendo's product needs a warning label, yet 3D movies can be promoted for kids that young with no warnings. Personally I'm not wholly convinced at the risk of vision problems.
You make a good point about the extended length of play, but that is of course on the parents to control. However, watching a movie in 3D can last anywhere from 1.5 - 3 hours as well, and 2 hours is about as long as I would allow my child to play videogames before I force a rest.
