I'm with you on this one. I loved the hell out of Mass Effect 2, but Red Dead Redemption is a much better game.

Of course I am sure this is one of those things that will be up for argument, and that is fine, as it means the games in 2010 were awesome, and the gamers came out the winners.

I tell you what surprises me most about this top ten list. The fact that Bayonetta is missing from it. Best action game all year by a very loooonnnngggg mile (sorry God of War 3, you're good, but your formula is so last-gen), and it's no where in the top ten.

I'm just hoping Angry Birds does not make it into the list like so many other top ten lists are putting it in. Especially at this point, when there are only the top two games left on the list.

Also surprised not to see Civ V in the top ten. Any game your family has to have an intervention with a doctor present, to get you to stop playing, deserves to be in the top ten of something. Easily the best strategy game in the past decade, and a real shocker it did not make the cut.

Yup, I also enjoyed Mass Effect 2 more than Red Dead Redemption.

I think I enjoyed Alan Wake more than both, though. :)

I really dug this game and for the storytelling alone I think it belongs right where it is. This game portrayed survival horror at its best.

@Altairio I think that as some of us enter our thirties we prefer a stronger story. Time to game is hard to come by. But when I have an addictive story I come back.

Chris didn't even mention the interesting mechanic that comes into play late in the game and in the Signal add on. Great game, though I'm not sure I would have put it *quite* so high on the list.

When I buy a book, all the chapters come with it, or it doesn't get bought.

Same principle applies here.

Notice how Chris explains the episodic nature of Alan Wake is marvelous from an experience perspective, not as a product. That's how things work here at the good ol' 'Stiq. As someone who is passionate, that's something I value. We all should.

@PersonOfSorts Maybe not lately. Back in the good ol' days, when someone buys a game, they get...the entire game.

I have to say, I don't much like the thought of post-release paid DLC much either - some (not all!) companies take it as an excuse to release half of a game but charge full price for it, knowing full well that a significant number of people will be suckers enough to pay even more for the other half.

That said, DLC (paid or free) can be used for both good and evil (though it's hard to go wrong with free). It's just a slippery slope, and not always clear which side a particular game is on.

Yeah, I mean, I get that mainstream would definitelyput blackops at number 1 but there are just too many great games this year. For COD to take #1 would be a huge insult to games that tried to push the envelope and really did some innovative stuff.

@mistahnuff It won't make the top ten. Just because it is a better video game than MW2 doesn't mean its top 10 worthy.

Well finally some props for Alan Wake in the gaming press. If only the game could have gotten these kinds of accolades more often back in May,
"season two" would be a guaranteed thing, and not just something we have to hope and pray will come about.

I adored this game, such a shame it didn't sell as well. I suspect the game at #2 in your GOTY is the cause of that, though.

Could've sworn this would be number 2, and the real mystery was what game would take hold of number 3. But now, a different mystery: What will be number 2? Halo or RDR seems plausible.

I played this game about 40% through. It was pretty terrible, game play mechanics wise. Very repetitive and shallow, extremely linear. Spooky atmosphere and good production values though.

Really don't understand this game's popularity.

Did we play the same game? I thought the game played wonderfully and was one of the most unique experiences in a year once again dominated by the usual suspects (Halo, CoD, God of War, and so forth).

@GuardianLegend Not only is your description of the game completely wrong but... popularity? What popularity... us fans have been worried that we'll never see a sequel given that the game didn't sell for crap and it had a 6 year development cycle.

@Xcrucio In my game, I remember walking down a path. Then having shadow people attacking me. I point my flashlight at them while walking backwards. Then I shoot them. Sometimes I hit a dodge button to dodge a thrown weapon.

That was it. I kept thinking... OK, I'm sure the next battle will introduce some new element to the game. But hours passed and nothing was introduced.

@(Unverified) What are you complaining about? I don't get it. Seems like most of the other games on the market you just point a reticule at an opponent and pull the trigger, and you're decked out with more ammunition and guns than a human being could reasonably carry.

In my fav shooter, Rainbow Six Vegas, I have so many ways to approach a battle, that it feels like I have 10 times more options than I did in Alan Wake.

I just don't get Alan Wake's popularity in the press. I don't playh many horror games, but the last one I really played was Fatal Frame 2, and I thought that game was way deeper and better than Alan Wake.

@TaintedKane I never saw a flash bang. They never showed up in the 40% of the game I played. Or at least I never found them. The flares, I used, but they were just the equivalent of a Shmup bomb attack. "Press this button to automatically kill everything."

@GuardianLegend The flares were far from auto-kill everything weapons - they would give you breathing room, but they actually did not kill most of the taken instantly. It would weaken them and keep them at bay while you regrouped, but no instakill. The flashbangs and flares were more potent, but fewer and farther in between.

For me, the "simpler" combat options combined with (at times) limited ammo to create a much more pronounced sense of dread than you would experience in other games. There was many a time, especially on the higher difficulty, where I would need to make the choice between trying to stand and fight and kill the taken, or to just throw down a flare and book it for the next light spot...and when that light spot flickered out as I approached it? -gulp-
