It's funny, no matter how hard you try, there always seems to be a "new year" adjustment period. Just today, we were buying groceries and we put "The Year Before The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Came Out" as the date! Can you imagine? The clerk looked at us like we were crazy, and who can blame her?
Though it is, in fact, the year that Skyrim is set to arrive, we've still got a touch over 10 months of waiting ahead of us. In the interim, we're going to be biding our time with modder Warwon's "Morrowind 2011" mod compendium (which you can see in action just after the break). That is, we would be, if Warwon weren't still in the process of looking for a host for the 4GB pack, which overhauls the environments in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind with beautifully modern graphics.
Great, so now we're waiting for both of them. Double waiting. Could The Year that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Comes Out Barring Any Delays possibly be off to a worse start?
Update: You can follow along with the project at the official site here. And it's live there right now!
Ya right.... enchant bows and arrows ,summon arrows, bug fixes beyond that tweak the combat a bit to be more damage than hit/miss rolls(,0,1/16th,1/8th,1/4th,half ,whole then bonus damages ranges) Mmmm other than that.... redo the models ... other than that.... I can't think of much :P
@The Monarch That's what I liked about Morrowind - it was intricate, strange and arcane. Entire game felt like wandering around some forgotten ruin full of strange symbols and mutant creature.
@Skorpeyon - Not to mention all of the file hosting services like Megaupload/Rapidshare/Filesonic/etc. All you have to do is split the file into multiple parts, and upload it. Once people have the file, they can hop on the torrent and help seed. When you start with just the torrent, especially on the bandwidth of a single person, it takes forever for anyone to actually get the file.
Seems like Bethesda should throw this guy a few bucks, then sell his mod as DLC. (but who's gonna buy DLC for a 9 year old game, right) So better yet - offer it as an "HD Morrowind" to be included along with Oblivion in an Elder Scrolls 5 uber super special edition platinum premiere pack.
Bethesda, no need to pay me for my marketing brilliance......this time.
Apart from the water, this doesn't really look all that much better. It's also not the first graphic overhaul. The Morrowind Visual Pack and other mods have been around for years. They all make individual textures look fantastic, but the whole is usually not as great as the sum of the parts.
That's just it, this isn't a single new mod, it's compendium of all the best existing graphical mods to Morrowind, tested to make sure they all play nice together and assembled to be all installed together.
@Courtney I guess my criticism that it doesn't look any better is totally predictable, then. Morrowind looks pretty fantastic out of the box. I don't think any of these mods make it look any better unless you're spending most of your time face planting into walls. They just make it look "different".
The only one I think I'd ultimately end up using is the one that makes the NPC's (and PC's) look less scary.
One of my favorite games and absolutely the best Elder Scrolls game. At least I think so.
Oblivion can go fly a very plain and very boring kite that neither excites nor completely disappoints.
Daggerfall can go fly a kite except it wont because the string wasn't properly tested so the kite flew off and is now roaming around 50 randomly generated clouds which all look the same.
Oh boy, a texture pack with objects sticking out all over the place like sore thumbs and unsightly neon glows everywhere, bizarre goo-like water, sun shafts and widescreen.
Justin I seem to remember you saying on a podcast some time ago that you didn't think Oblivion needed mods and anyone who used them was doing the game a disservice. I'd assume the only reason you're excited about this mod for Morrowind is because your computer can actually RUN Morrowind.
That said, things like this have been around for a very long time, and generally look much better.
The OP on reddit has been posting images and news for months, i'd like to hear something other than "It will be ready soon". Looks great, but I don't know if or when the pack will be released.
Son of a bitch! I just spent 4 hours installing mod after texture pack after mod to make the game look really good, and now there's something that makes it look even better in a single mod...
Hey guise me and my frat bros all chipped in to get a copy of the new elder scrolls. You jelly?
