Inside Sim Racing does not mess around. When the site got its hands on what it says is one of the first Thrustmaster T500RS units in the US (a.k.a. the official Gran Turismo 5 racing wheel), it made this epic unboxing video. Carrying a $600 price tag [Ed.'s note: Not a typo!], the peripheral is expected to ship in North America and Europe on January 5 ... which, coincidentally, is when this blogger's car payment, less than half the price of the T500RS, is due.
[Thanks, Chris]

@daevv ah, youngsters. Thrustmaster is one of the oldest independent controller manufacturers in the industry. They were around way before logitech. Gotta have a chukle every time some noob pulls out the name as it was something unseen. They started as specialized in flight simulator cloches, and they were pioneers in introducing a separate throttle controller, hence "thrust-master".
It's that simple.

@Abriael You forgot to mention their fall from grace around 99-03 when they kept releasing crap peripheral after crap peripheral, like the fragmaster. Sure they have solid HOTAS controllers for PCs, but looking at what they've released in just the race wheels department alone make me skeptical about shelling out that much money for what they offer out of the box. For a hundred bucks less, I can get the Fanatec GT2 clubsport edition, get superior pedals, compatibility with PS3/360/PC, as well as getting a 6+1 and Sequential shifter in the box.

A $600 peripheral to play a $60 game on a $300 PS3. Something's not adding up here...
Posted: Jan 3rd 2011 11:27PM Abriael said
@Ryan P considering that many sim racing enthusiasts spend several hundred dollars on a cockpit with racing seat and all (and those contribute to the experience much less than an actual top-notch wheel), I don't see why people consider the price so outrageous.
It's definitely niche, and it sure isn't for me, but I can easily see it having a sizable market.

I spent around $2000 on my racing sim, and that doesn't include the cost of a screen or the console/PC.
And even I wouldn't pay $600 US for a steering wheel.
This doesn't even have a stick shifter, my G25 which cost less than half that does.....

So where does the rest of the 2000 you spend go? I mean, a realistic racing wheel, with proper tactile feedback, seems like a worthy investment over a cheap wheel that only turns a few degrees and feels like a toy wheel.
Even if similar wheels are out there and are cheaper I'm still curious just what you're spending all that money on.

A good, solid frame isn't cheap. Sure you can buy the 6-800$ ones but they rock or rattle, especially when you turn your wheel hard and that kinda ruins the feel.
My frame also has a subwoofer under the seat, speaker mounts at the rear and front, a real racing seat that sits on rails, and more but I won't go on because i'll sound like a fanboy when i'm real just a casual racer with a bit of disposable income.
As for the wheel, if you watch that video, there is nothing about that wheel that is better than the logitech G25/G27, the range of motion is the same, the dual force feedback is the same, the logitechs have leather wrapped wheels and a 6 gear manual shifter, plus the paddle shifts turn with the wheel, unlike the akward paddle shifters that stay with the base unit on this. (the G25/G27's aren't cheap wheels, they *were" one of the most expensive wheels before this one)

You clearly didn't watch the video, and heard the comments.
The FFB on that thing is much better than the one found on the G25 or G27. Darin compared it to the ones found in the high end, much more expensive Frex and ECCIs. The wheel also has 1080 degree rotation (that's 3 full turns), unlike the 900 degree (2 and a half turns ) from the Logitechs.
In any case, one would wonder why you'd spread misinformation like this. You clearly didn't listen to anything Darin said in that video.
The G27's FFB is weak, the gears are made of plastic and if you put the FFB at 10 in Gran Turismo 5, you'll understand how toy-ish it actually feels ( when you hear the "crackling" sound).
This wheel may not be for you, because of its price, but that doesn't mean you should downplay it with bullcrap like you did there.

Hope you enjoy your $600 steering wheel for a few degree's of extra motion which is only usable in GT5.

'Tis an epic looking peripheral - clearly for the hard core racing fans, and not the more casual GT5 fan, but that's what Thrustmaster are all about. If you're not sure about that, check out their Hotas Warthog (http://www.thrustmaster.com/product.aspx?ProductID=221). This crew aren't about casual mass-market products (we've got Activision for that ;)) - this crew are about high-end gaming peripherals for gamers that like to get into their game :).
If I had the spare money, and wasn't saving for a house, I'd be grabbin' one of these babies for sure.
