Kinect Hacks: RUSE with gesture controls

At first, this video appears to show the Xbox 360 RTS R.U.S.E controlled using Kinect, but it's actually a ... clever deception: Evoluce's Wolfgang Herfurtner applied a Kinect interface to the PC version of R.U.S.E., allowing the in-game cursor to be controlled with motions.

While there's a certain feeling of power, we're sure, that comes from managing an entire battlefield with sweeping hand movements, this appears to be a case in which being the controller is somewhat more unwieldy than being the person with a controller in hand. But while it looks to be an awkward replacement for the traditional mouse and keyboard on PC, it's a potential proof of concept for an RTS interface for consoles.

I wonder if MIcrosoft realized the hacker scene would love the hell out of the kinect like it has. All these things people have done with Kinect make me want one.

True, too bad this thing was supposed to be a XBOX toy, and now as always the hacks are getting better and better, and even tough some guys here keep saying that what they are doing is not gaming material i think this last hack confirms that there Is gaming material, of course this and the sudden "inspiration" that we are going to see in the next games when companies start to do things like this, instead of more dancing games....

I just find it interesting that Microsoft and other companies are getting all of this inspiration for free. Lets hope they're paying attention.

Really cool, but I'd like to see it advance beyond this to recognize a point or "air tap" control instead of only using both your hands and body as a large left and right click mouse.

Awesome job for a hack though, imagine if this guy had a team and some money to really refine it.

Kinect on PC, the only reason to own a Kinect - so far.

@Faenix You're too "hardcore" for your own good. Fun is fun and kinect with a room full of friends is still pretty fun.

@Faenix There's fun to be had with the Kinect on the 360, even if the games don't review well. Even the "bad" ones like Kinect Sports are fun to play.

This is FREAKIN awesome. Finally we may be able to use a small table or at least the air to react what was done in the initial annoncement trailer without a Surface several thousand dollar purchase.

Playstation Move can do this game better...!

You don't have to flail your hand just to make something attack.

@dgenerate87 The mouse can do this even better than the Move.

I think the point here is to explore ways to use Kinect, not necessarily to prove it's better than some already existing interface.

Yeaa well I know people who can dislocate their shoulder and it used to be cool back in the day and a neat 'use' of their boring ol arm that they explored, but they never put that to good use that helped them out in life.

That guy needs to be careful, a few times it looked like he was doing the hail Hitler thing.

Anyway, I'm betting all this waving your arm around will result in thousands of people who look like the half and half muscle man guy from Lady in the Water.

I feel tired just watching this video. Your arms will get tired after 15 minutes of playing a RTS this way. Kinect = EPIC FAIL
