Quick! Somebody dig up the list of 2010 donors to the American Optometric Association -- and see if Nintendo's on there. The AOA, which represents America's "family eye doctors," has issued a press release to parents in part suggesting that Nintendo's 3DS handled "may actually help uncover subtle disorders" in children's vision when the newfangled three-dee-vice is released this year. "Difficulties with appreciating" 3DS (or other 3D devices and technology), the AOA warns, may suggest something is wrong with your kid -- like, really wrong.
These "subtle problems" could lead to "rapid fatigue of the eyes" and dreaded "loss of 3D viewing," and it could get much worse: "loss of place when reading or copying, reduced reading comprehension, poor grades and increased frustration at school" are all possible nightmares come true if your kids show signs of the "3Ds of 3D viewing" (no, really) -- discomfort, dizziness or lack of depth -- while playing 3DS. How else will you know, if you don't buy one for them immediately?
But what if your kids are too young? After all, Nintendo has warned that children under six shouldn't be playing the handheld in 3D mode. About that ... You see, "children younger than 6 can use the 3DS in 3D mode," the AOA assures, "if their visual system is developing normally." Listen to your family eye doctors, your kids could sure use a 3DS. "In moderation," of course.

@Demaar If your eyesight is actually good, and the 3D hurts, it is a sign of bad content. Most 3D content created today is not designed to be easy on your eyesight, so this "bad stereo" you are used to seeing is just the content creator not knowing the limits of the human eyes and making things arbitrarily too separated, too fast motion, or incorrectly placing things on the edges of the screen, so in turn it tends to hurts your eyes or head. But if someone is looking at "pleasing" content and it hurts, then I can say that usually it is a sign of actual vision problems. This happens a lot when we show 3D content to customers, and either they are wearing glasses or they need them, so they complain about the 3D hurting.

Not sure why your comment was downvoted. Many people get headaches from watching 3D movies, because the lenses in your eyes are constantly trying to focus on the images where they LOOK like they are (floating in the air in front of you) rather than where they REALLY are (on the screen). This constant refocusing gives you a headache.

My eyesight is so bad, i can't see the 3D effect when i go to movies; what makes me think it's gonna change with this? Stupid parents with their horrible eyesight passing it on to me....

@kpaq00 Although 3D kind of works on me.. I'm with you on the crappy eyes.. Getting a new set is good for the first 3 months, then I have noticible change... No idea how I could be using them wrong, I'm waiting for those bionic eyes like Geordie La Forge

"Nintendo glasses: Don't play your 3DS without them or else you wont be able to play it for too long. Want your friend to see what you are playing? Another pair of 3DS glasses are only the low price of $9.99! Enjoy Nintendo's new handheld featuring old classics such as Mario, Zelda, Metroid..."
I can read it now.

@Leafhopper Isn't that going completly against what nintendo said about it having “glassesless 3-d”?

@Faenix Well the way I was using it was that the glasses arent for rendering the 3D effect its from protecting you from the 3-D Effect but your point still stands.

"cheap ass gamers"? Seriously? Because we don't want to spend $1500 to play 3 PSN games in 3D? Well then call me a cheap ass because I'd rather go with Nintendo's much more advanced, less expensive, dorky-glasses-free version.

Sure, it's your opinion, but... If I can remember a little, Toshiba has design a prototype of LCDs 3D glasses-free some time ago, and they quit the development because of the limitations, that are pretty huge...
If you are saying that is "more advanced" to have a less apreciative 3D for a not so cheap price like that, than ok, go for it...
Because Zelda in 3D will be awesome... and completely different from what it have been for a while...
I will just go for my Killzone 3, tnks...

Fact: There's something already wrong with your kid if he doesn't have a Nintendo.

You mean parents? The parents should have already given their kid a Nintendo handheld, then been interested enough in their kids light to determine they may be having trouble seeing the screen and taken them to the eye doctor to get checked out.

As I've said before, this is similar to what my fiancee has. A brain/eye disorder called alternating exotropia, which basically means she can only see out of one eye at a time, never both at the same time.
No 3D, no dept perception.
She was mad when the audience was oohing and aahing over Saw 3D and she couldn't see a damn difference.
I did hear, however, that there are therapies designed to enable stereoscopic vision for her and those like her.

Didn't Miyamoto once hook up with an optometrist?

This is like the 3rd report I've read about optometrists recommending the 3DS, even saying it's "good for you". Is the next "moneyhat" fiasco going to star the AOA?
Posted: Jan 5th 2011 8:54PM junhotak said
well, American Heart Association loves Wii and Optometric Association says no to 3DS, wait, if his is the case, how did all the TV manufacturers got a way from this? wait, have you checked the connection between American Optometric Association and Fox News? You won't believe what you can find.

I don't think 3D technology has matured enough or been around long enough for long term effects to really be studied. I mean, come one, adults develop eye problems from looking at 2D computer monitors- You don't think kids while still in their development stages won't suffer later on from staring at 3D screens?

I agree to a point, but I think their theory is if a small child isn't interested in it, then perhaps they are having problems seeing the 3D.
I'm not convinced though. My kids hate going to 3D movies, though it could be the glasses.......

If joystiq actually bothered to do anything more than reposting what others write, you might actually find the connection between Nintendo and the AOA.
