Mac App Store live, with Angry Birds topping charts
21
Apple's Mac App Store has arrived right on time via the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update, opening up a version of the ludicrously lucrative iOS storefront for Mac desktop and laptop users to peruse. The Store is accessed through its own application (separate from iTunes), but purchases and downloads are tied to an Apple ID, and any credit from iTunes is seamlessly applied to the Mac App Store upon logging in.
The Mac App Store is as impeccably tidy as the iOS Store -- it's organized just the same -- and accessing the Games category is just a few clicks away. As of writing, there are 98 games listed in the "Top Paid" ranking (which shows up to 100), led, unsurprisingly, by a $5 (50 percent off "introductory price") version of Angry Birds. In fact, Rovio's phenomenon leads all Mac App Store sales, currently, and is joined by Chopper 2 ($1), Flight Control HD ($5) and The Incident ($3) among the top-ten bestselling apps. No Halo in sight, yet.

Can't get enough of Angry Birds. Fun and a GREAT price to boot. Devs could learn a thing too, especially regarding price points.

Maybe I haven't played it long enough, but I don't get the appeal of Angry Birds over say...Crush the Castle (http://armorgames.com/play/3614/crush-the-castle).
Does Angry Birds get deeper than that? It certainly a pretty game and the controls are tight; I wouldn't mind giving it a second chance.

It's a personal choice really. i find Angry Birds to be much more visually appealing. Amusing too. it's as challenging as it is fun and it continues to grow.
Crush the Castle, to me, looks...meh. Gameplay wise it looks attractive but the art in it just looks so unattractive to me. I think part of Angry Bird's success lies in the art: big bold colors, heavy outlining making everything pop. It's like you said, it's pretty. Pair that with pig murder and you've got yourself a hit.

@NaeemTHM I haven't figured it out either man. I downloaded the lite version and it's gimmick was exhausted before I got to the end of the demo. Fun but nothing I would consider buying. Maybe "hardcore" really is doomed.

Who knew launching birds with special powers from a slingshot onto pigs who have built elaborate forts would become a smash hit? It really is the game that keeps on giving.
Now bring DoodleJump to the Mac. You can do it!

I thought I'd shored up my own gaming freetime when I'd introduced my girlfriend to Bejeweled and Pokemon, but it looks like if I can get her Angry Birds on her laptop, I might just gain enough breathing room to beat AC:Brotherhood and reach Lt. Colonel in Reach! Mwahahaha!

After downloading Angry Birds (for free) on my Android phone, i wonder what the hell people like about it. I mean, i didn't pay anything for it, and i still felt ripped off.

The fact that you can learn how to play the game in 0 seconds is one of its major virtues. I put Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja on my gf's iPad for xmas, and she's already an expert. She is not a gamer. at. all.
I guess the hook is stupid-easy yet fairly deep gameplay. And by deep, I mean that it's basically puzzles. Sure, you are always flinging birds at stuff, but some of those pig fortresses are tricky.
Compared to Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies is rocket science.

Same here. What's the big deal? I played it, I enjoyed it. It is very high production values. But $5.00 to play it on the Mac?

I'm not going to pay that much to play it on a non-portable, non-touchscreen device.

The Incident is the best app on the store so far. Just sayin'...
