The PS3 root key saga continues, with hacker Geohot posting a video demonstrating homemade software running on a PS3 using firmware 3.55. There's not much to the software, essentially a reworked "Hello World" that says "sup dawg, it's geohot," but it's more than enough to prove viability of homebrew software on the PS3.
Sony, for its part, has stated to Edge that it will "fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details." However, fail0verflow hacking group member pytey recently told the BBC, "The complete console is compromised - there is no recovery from this." He added that the only possible way to correct the hack would be for Sony to "issue new hardware."

Great, now they'll probably have to go some annoying route where whenever you connect to the store it checks your HD for any suspicious files.
Thanks hackers. Thanks for constant online authentication, thanks for shit like Stardock and all the other intrusive methods of DRM...

Yeah. Before you people stick up for the hackers, stop and think: if it weren't for piracy and hacking, we wouldn't have this crap like DRM, system checks, and other intrusive protection measures.
Yep, hackers sure are great and helpful types.

You are so naive. You actually think DRM wouldn't exist without piracy? Sure, that's the reason media publishers will tell you it exists and I'm sure it's one of the primary reasons, but it's not the only reason. They don't like Fair Use. If they could get away with it they would lock every game, song, or movie to a single device and make you "purchase" them over and over. And I put purchase in quotes because in their minds all we're actually doing is licensing media anyway. You think the push for digital distribution is actually to prevent piracy and for convenience? Hell no. They want to kill off the used media markets and your ability to loan to friends. They want to able to flip a switch and remove access to everything you "purchased". They want to leave you with as few of your consumer rights as they can get away with. Piracy is certainly an issue, but it's also just scapegoat for all their other goals as they chip away at yore rights. Open your eyes and quit being so damned naive.

Sony doesn't need to update firmware. They will simply start checking your hard drive for the custom files. But all that does is keep you off line. No hacker wants to go online anyway except to watch netflix or the real bungholes who want to cheat at online games. And if you really want to do so, just have a second hard drive and mod your hardware to be able to swap easily. Sony happy. Hacker happy. I don't see what the problem is anyway, every pirate I know wouldn't give sony the scum off their. . . Well you get the idea. And any other pirates will give them their money where they deserve it.

How DARE people do better things with Sony's console than Sony?

If you really think anything that comes of this will be better than the amazing stuff Sony has done with the PS3, then you're mentally damaged.
Seriously. I have no problem with homebrew, but it will be inferior. And the great stuff on the PS3 is only there because ti makes money. Piracy will damage the greatness of the PS3 if it takes off. There will be fewer Demon's Souls. Fewer GT5s. Fewer Warhawks.
There is absolutely no doubt that the criminals here, who are creating devices to circumvent copyright, are actually making life worse for PS3 gamers. No doubt at all.

i don't know about the rest of the world but in Indonesia you can buy a PS3 preloaded with 30 games of your choice for no extra fee. They're all loaded with Jailbreak and Open Manager and you can copy and run PS3 titles freely. no online play, of course, but people here are perfectly satisfied with singe player and local multiplayer anyway.

One solution to piracy is to ensure games all take up the full 50 gbs on the disc and are difficult to reduce in size because of convolution.
It's hard for poor losers to download 50 gb after 50 gb. They could do it once in a while, but piracy would be hampered a lot.
Sony should also drastically infest torrent sites with pirated games that brick consoles after a time period (maybe 14 days?) Long enough to snag lots of people before warning signs show up. Enough to make loser pirates paranoid. Hopefully get their IP addresses, not that much can be done with that.
They should make it much easier to accidentally get a fake version of a pirated game than a real pirated game. they could go a step further and make this the case for exploits, but I prefer they target game pirates.

The simplest way for Sony to fix this problem is as follows. I hope you're reading this Sony because I will only say it once or possible more times if you ask nicely. Firstly you must develop a time machine and an android capable of using it. This machine must be capable of going back in time. Send it back 30 or 40 years and program it to eliminate geohot's parents. You might also try getting them to fall in love with different people if you're against the lethal approach. This will alter the space time continuum and allow your precious PS3 to live on untainted. (Keep in mind that this approach may cause the destruction of the entire universe.)

If your idea of "benefits" includes banning consoles/IPs from PSN, constant network security updates, stricter policies and the consumer being the one to ultimately lose from this, that's exactly how this "benefits" the world.

The PS3 is capable of a lot of interesting stuff. It can rip a DVD much faster than a normal computer, even if the computer is years newer technologically. It's also just an interesting and different architecture.
However, it's a gaming console that plays HD movies really well. That's the primary function, and Sony's games and blu-ray movies, along with online streaming of video, are obviously the best things the PS3 can do. Homebrew will not be remotely as interesting to 99% of people.

Chip away at my rights? It's a f$%^ing video game. I don't "need" a single thing the entertainment industry has to offer. Every last thing in your list can easily be done in this day and age, but if any publisher were to actually do all those things, people would vote with their wallets and they would have to make changes to remain profitable.
Congratulations, you discovered capitalism.

Yes, and those "There are no refunds for this purchase/item" disclaimers on every piece of content you can buy from XBLA/Wii Shop/PSN aren't enough of a clue for some people.
