What are the odds on new home consoles? Is it still too soon? Kinect and was obviously introduced to breath new life into the 6 year old Xbox 360 and PS3 is really hitting it's stride now. So it does seem kinda soon for new consoles from Microsoft and Sony.

But what about Nintendo? Now that Sony and MS are on their turf I feel like it's time for them to announce the next big thing. Nintendo has been late to the party 4 generations in a row (SNES, N64, GCN, and Wii all launched a year after the competition). Maybe this is their chance to get a jump start on the next generation of video games.

...or at least release an HD Wii.

I have been thinking about an HD Wii lately and I've started to question the point of it. Really, if all it did was play your games in high definition, I couldn't care less. I would have no desire. They need a brand new system. Wii 2 should be the next step, not an HD Wii.

I do agree that the Wii is starting to show its age, graphically speaking, when comparing it to the 360 and PS3, both of which seem to be getting better actually. Even though the Wii had an excellent year in 2010, with awesome games coming out all the time, the technology is starting to look and feel dated. Reggie has said that they want to sell even more Wiis than they have before they even talk about the next console, but I honestly don't think the Wii can last as long as the PS3 and 360. Plus, with Sony's Move essentially being a direct competitor and upgrade to the what the Wii can do, Nintendo needs to step up and show us something to look forward to...

And I'm not talking about the heart rate monitor.

@NaeemTHM Nintendo would be doing themselves a favor by waiting until Sony and MS speak up about the next generation. Multi-platform games don't even come out for the Wii, and considering how the only games that sell on the Wii are first party titles I think they'll be designing their next system to match up with what Sony and MS are doing as to not be left behind. Not to mention the next generation is still a complete enigma to us:

Will it be digital-only? Controllers or motion devices (or both)? How can you guarantee sales if the tech for the 360/PS3 isn't really that dated?

Immediately after a 3DS launch? I doubt it. Considering how incompetent the majority of third party devs were in making worthwhile Wii titles, it's probably not going to help hoping that they'll have the resources to split amongst uniquely 3D games and whatever curve ball nintendo decides to spin on another home console.

I don't think there has been enough evolution to require a new home console yet. All the small stuff has been mostly updatable through online updates.

Really? Wii is just "starting" to looked dated? From my perspective, it was dated when it came out. It's basically just a Game Cube with motion controls and some crudy internet capabilities. Not to say there aren't some decent games for it, but it primarily relies on brilliant marketing and a massive demographic, typically ignored by the more hardcore consoles, all to sell primarily gimicky games, or even full blown shovelware. But yeah, an HD Wii would be about 5 years late to the party by that point. Although it might still sell like hotcakes, because I don't think the other two consoles have really effectively captured the more casual (women, young kids, & older people) market with their latest motion forays. But it will be interesting to see what Nintendo does next, as unlike the other consoles, they've road their wave, and they're going to have to adapt, and fast to keep from losing massive amounts of market share. I think the other two consoles are really just beginning to reach their potential, particularly the PS3.

@NaeemTHM I agree with the others. The only "new" hardware we'll see is the 3DS. I think the big three are waiting untill technology catches up and they may go 100% digital. Give it a year or two and there will be a lot of people (remember to think WORLD, not United States) with connections capable of downloading a movie in five or so minutes, so longer games can be transmited like so.
So... 3DS will be there. maybe some new PC componente will also be present. But no new consoles

Just saying, the 360 was released in 2005. The Wii and PS3 were both released in 2006, so technically Sony and Nintendo were both "late to the party" this generation.

The 3DS will have just launched not long before this and I imagine that most of their presentation will be dedicated to hyping up all the new titles for it.

Oh, and they will unveil the new 3DSi coming out for Christmas, of course. ;)

New exclusives please Sony and Microsoft, don't bore us in talk of 3D, Kinect and Move, unless it is a game utilizing the two that is worth mentioning, I've seen enough casual games these last few years to blind anyone.

I'm expecting the next step in the Halo series to be announced, and more exclusives for both consoles, whether they be sequels or new IPs
