Penny Arcade Adventures tearing up Mac App Store charts, Ep. 3 still unlikely
39
Just four days after the launch of the Mac App Store, some developers are finding unexpected success. The first two episodes of Hothead Games' truncated Penny Arcade Adventures trilogy are currently ranking high in the bestselling apps chart at number 21 and 56, respectively (and certainly boosted by their $4 sale prices). This prompted the developer to tweet, "We're thrilled that Precipice of Darkness has been doing well on the Mac App Store!"
While that was heartening, it was the now-pulled followup tweet (screen-capped above) that raised eyebrows: "For those of you that want PA Episode 3, all you need to do is get 100,000 of your friends to buy 1&2. Seriously. Do that and we'll make it," a Hothead staffer wrote. Turns out that's not quite the case.
"That's certainly news to me!" Penny Arcade biz dude Robert Khoo told Joystiq, adding, "there's nothing new to say about future [episodes]." Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik responded to Hothead's tweet, stating simply, "that's actually not true."
Hothead's Vince Ceraldi cleared up the confusion, telling us, "That was a very enthusiastic, excited but misplaced tweet regarding Ep. 3. This is probably the result of the entire company being so thrilled on how well received the games have been on the Mac App Store." Ciraldi said that the Mac App Store "is a great tool for us as game makers to reach new gamers" who may not have known about Penny Arcade Adventures. As for the suggestion that enough sales of the first two games could drive development of a third game, Ciraldi said, "As for the PA games, I can honestly say we don't know what the future holds," adding that the "obvious fan enthusiasm is extremely encouraging and rewarding, but there is no 'number' that is going to trigger any next steps."
And sales alone may not be enough to prompt Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins to get back into the game's development ... err, the game itself. At PAX Prime last September, when asked if and when we might learn what caused the cancellation of the third episode, Krahulik told Joystiq, "I think the problem is that we're too polite." Holkins added, "Believe that. I know it seems strange," and then Krahulik continued, "If you can imagine a world where that's a reality, we are too polite to say exactly what happened."
Upon announcing the cancellation of the third episode last March, Holkins told Joystiq, "[Hothead] definitely could've done both games," alluding to the amount of energy the developer was putting into DeathSpank. "I think they could've made DeathSpank and Episode 3, but I think Episode 3 would've suffered," he added. "I mean, I know it would have suffered. So we'd rather not do it than do it half-assed, and so we're going to finish that story, but it's going to be on our website."
In September, expanding on that comment, Holkins said, "At the core of that is that we reserve the right to not disappoint our readers. I reserve that right, as a creator, as an individual, if I think that something is not going to please you, I reserve the right not to make it. That's the pact; that if I think that it's not going to be what you like or what you want, then I can't make it with a straight face."
So it's possible, and maybe even probable, that no matter how how much success Penny Arcade Adventures finds on Apple's Mac App Store, we'll never see that third episode. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't consider the sale-priced episodes unworthy of your time, just don't expect to be rewarded with a shiny new third episode for your support. For now, you'll have to settle for the non-interactive version.

Spooky. I'd gotten the bits and pieces of this story over the years - but all together, it paints a rather cryptic picture. What happened to ruffle PA's feathers?

Put them both up on steam for a buck and you'll get that many sales

The weird thing about this, for me, has always been that I think both companies are so awesome. The things that Hothead makes are great and I still get a huge kick out of PA. It makes me doubly curious that this situation ended up at a place where neither of them can really say what happened, or if there is a chance to work together again in the future.

I'm starting to wonder if Gabe and Tycho just sometimes gets rubbed the wrong way by other companies. There was that podcast that they made out to sound horrible and rude and insincere, but when I looked up the podcast, it sounded fun and the fans were surprised and disappointed that having PA as guests didn't result in legendary hilarity.
Not to say they aren't great guys, but some people, as soon as they feel like they've been slighted or they're being jerked around, immediately feel sour and refuse to associate with the jerk-er even if there were reasonable circumstances (like a scheduling miscommunication for the podcast or a higher priority game for Hothead).

OK I've always wanted to get into these games but was waiting for all 3 (I thought it was 4?) games to be released first. Then I was going to buy the compilation. However, as the article states, we may never see the end of Penny Arcade Adventures. Sad Panda T__T
Are the first two games alone worth it?

@NaeemTHM First two games are good, even better if you can get them cheap somewhere. And once you finish them you can read the ending on their site. You don't get to play all 3, but you get the entire story.
I'll admit, for as excited as I was for the games, and after buying and playing them to death, I never even looked at the ending on the site. I was too frustrated that the third game wasn't coming out, but I'm happy to have played them.

In my opinion the Penny Arcade Adventures games sucked. I only played the demo and after about 20 mins I was done. I just didn't like them. Thank god I didn't pay for them.

It would be hilarious to see after they declared the series a failure they end up making a tidy sum from both episodes.
I'm never going to work in this industry. Ever.

The answer is Greenhouse, a digital distribution service that PA launched when the released the first PA game.
They focused on highlighting independent games that they really loved.
It's been down for a bit for "remodeling" and I don't think anyone really knows what the future of the service is.

Great story and writing, and I actually liked the gameplay a little more than Deathspank's since it wasn't as repetitive. I hope to see them release PAA on iPhone4/iPad as well.
While I'm sad that there was/is a business hitch, I hope that some developer can make a sensible business-plan to license Hothead's code and continue forward with Mike & Jerry as partners. Goodness knows that Hothead had enough turnover since then that someone could probably hire quite a bit of the original team ;)
At this point, even though I greatly enjoyed their games, I just don't trust Hothead to deliver complete experiences. Aside from PAA's third episode, the Deathspank sequel seemed like a total development phone-in that didn't correct *any* of the widely-reported gameplay flaws of the original (unlike PAA's second episode, which was an awesome refinement).
It will take a consistent delivery of quality games for me to invest any more of my attention/money into Hothead's releases. I eagerly away the third part of Deathspank to see if they can pull things together.

So a new business strategy emerges why pay an ad company to lie when you can do it free on twitter/the web in general?

I think the company made the right choice. If they didnt want to make two games at once why force them too just because you want to? Granted they own the rights to the story and all that but I dont think its fair to blame only them for it never coming out when they are now ready (and willing) to make it but they wont let them.

Well, there's multiple questions involved there. First, there's the question of letting fans down who have purchased the first two parts of a series that has been promised and advertised to them.
Second, there's the legal/contractual question of whether or not they were in fact obligated to finish the series, but were more interested (even if for good reasons) in moving on to another project.

When Reddit said "Gabe Confirms: Episode 3 Cancelled", I was probably the only person HEAVILY DISAPPOINTED when I clicked through and saw it was Penny Arcade Adventures. I had honestly been really looking forward to it and...frankly, hadn't been keeping track of how long it had been since Episode 2, so I felt it pretty hard when the game was pulled out from under me. I'm one of the game's biggest fans.

That's too bad. I was hoping for them to set an XBLA price record with Part 3.

So I like the PA guys and all, but just exactly how many business relationships have to go bad before you stop blaming the other guys?

I am a big Penny arcade fan but the games weren't great and were priced way too high at th time of release for the quality/lenght of the games. the Pa guys thought that, because they are popular, they could get away with this. It was wrong.
I bought and finished the first one and never wanted to go any where else. At first, I thought it was because hotheadgames weren't that great at making games, but then again, I just simply LOVE the Daathspanks series and consider them great quality games.
I think the bottom line is the story (which should have been a very strong point considering who is being it) was a let down, so was the gameplay mechanisms.

Stop charging an insane amount of money on XBLA and I'd pick up 1 & 2 right away.
