This seems like a pretty natural fit -- the PlayStation Phone, which, hilariously enough, still hasn't been formally acknowledged by Sony, was recently captured on video running a PSOne emulator Android application called ROM Buddy PSX. It should be stressed that the handheld (which has supposedly been branded the Xperia Play) doesn't have this functionality built in -- the video is simply demonstrating how the Play's slide-out gamepad can be used to interact with the App, and the zombies therein.
Of course, that doesn't make the video any less dead sexy. Check out the video after the jump to see the PlayStation Phone living up to its unofficial name, playing ROMs of Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer.

I believe ROM Buddy PSX is not actually an emulator but just a method of downloading PSX ROMs onto your phone...
Posted: Jan 10th 2011 1:12PM TheFairlaner said
@yukeshime Yeah, the emulator is almost certain PSX4Droid which uses ROM Buddy to search for downloadable ROMs

So it's not using an Android PS Emulator to run the game, only ROM Buddy to get the files on there so they can be run by a Native Emulator ?

At thia point it's been leaked for months now, It'd be frankly impossible to put the genie back in the bottle, and that's assuming they know who the person is that started the flood of information. It's easier just to let it exist and try to drum up anticipation for the device.

Just let me buy this bastard! Everyone else seems to be playing one. Hell even if its psp or whatever gaming flops, I will at least have a control pad for emulated games besides a wiimote.

Say it with me:
"Sony can not comment on rumors or speculation"
Seriously, it's absolutely HILARIOUS that this phone hasn't been officially acknowledged in any way. Come on, Sony, when there's video of the damned thing up and running, it's time to stop being coy about it.

@PN04 By continuing to ignore it's existence, they're losing the chance to ride the hype created by all of the leaks. Gamers are intrigued by the product, and even a small tease by Sony PR would help to stoke that particular fire. Instead, they've chosen to ignore that hype, and insist on not acknowledging the phone's existence. The more information that gets leaked, the more foolish they begin to look by not making a public statement. It's their decision whether or not to make a statement, but by not acknowledging something we all know exists, they're missing a good PR opportunity.

I thought that the d-pad would work for something else than games, like selecting the ROM or moving through lists...

It probably will, the emulator that's being used is not really Sony's.

Somebody's just messing with the prototype, and wants to show games on the thing before it's actually ready.

Sony makes me laugh, unlike Apple who release news with utmost shock and within a week or so its on the market to buy, Sony has thier products leaked, a year before they announce it and even then it takes a couple of months to get onto the market, jeez, by then, everyone loses interest.
Sony, word of advice, stop letting things get leaked, when they do, officially announce it asap and have it released before your competitors. That way you'll find more success.
Now...as for the PSP2.

Dude, what else is Sony going to do? You can't watch every single person every second of the day. Something is always going to leak, no matter what company your are, unless your corporation in its entirety is in a office building the size of Sucker Punch Studios.

And even then they fail too... like the iPhone 4 prototype that got left in a bar over 2 months before it was released. I do think Sony seems to have the worst trouble with this, but there are very few surprise products anymore. Seems like details and pictures of everything gets leaked early these days.

Also, Sony will bring it out when they're ready too. In the business world, its all about timing. Even if there's a leak, there's still something important about when you bring it out. Yeah, not much of a surprise if its already been leaked, but whatever plans you make internally, you've got to be consistent and stick to the plan. There really isn't much you can do to stop them. I like what Sly C and Vidikron both said. Speaking internally as well as Sony doesn't have the worst trouble. Microsoft does very well, but Microsoft is also very small when compared to Sony. Sony covers a lot of ground. Microsoft has their Xbox 360 and Windows.

I think the reason Sony hasn't officially announced it yet is because there is nothing inherently exciting about the product. Sure, it can play games, but so can a PSP, iPhone, and DS.
In the past decade Sony hasn't been an innovator, so most of their products arrive seeming like somebody's already done it. I think Sony may be waiting for one of their software devs to think of something new and then rush to announce the phone

I actually really want this. I don't care about playing PSP2-level quality games on a phone, but so long as I can play Minis and PSOne games I'm fine. The phone would also need to have a Facebook app (for me, personally), but I assume that's a given in this day and age.
