This morning, we learned of Silent Hill: Downpour, Vatra Games' take on Konami's iconic horror series. Now comes word that there's a large piece on the game in the February issue of Game Informer, which MTV Multiplayer has culled some details from (damn our lazy mailman!).
According to the site, lead character Murphy Pendleton will have more to do than the protagonists who came before him -- specifically, he'll be able to pursue side-quests in the game world. (No other details were offered, sadly.) The article does mention, however, that a new hybrid camera system will combine the fixed viewpoint style of the original games with the newer behind-the-character camera introduced in Homecoming. Let's just hope Downpour's designers remember that some gamers prefer their controls inverted.

Has anyone mentioned that the person in this screen shot looks like a Vault Dweller from Fallout?

Or do vault suits look like prison jumpsuits due to the Vault's true dark purpose?

i really dont expect that much at this point with Silent Hill series. I hope they go back to the storytelling and character driven game that SH2 was.. i do like SH4 the room though and people hated that game.

Here's a faster to read and a bit more informative list:

I'm all for the blending of gameplay features throughout the series. This may be a winning formula.

I've only ever played Origins on PSP, I have the first PSone on my PSP, have never played it.
I want to like Silent Hill, but nothing is jumping out at me. Am I dead to survival horror?

I was under the impression that 4 and Homecoming were the generally-agreed-to-be-crappy Silent Hill games

I'm the minority here. I've always been a fan of SH series, (not the last installment though) so I'm looking forward to this one.

Click the link that Arsenic13 posted, it's a list of all the stuff the article has mentioned or has been confirmed. Somewhere on the site is the actual scan of the article, which was a good read as well.
As far as side-quests, I don't think they're going to be sidequests like what a lot of people are thinking.
If anything, they're going to be more like Silent Hill 1 where some stuff is optional and if you don't do it it alters the ending.
I highly doubt they would pull some kind of horror-GTA style thing.
All in all, after reading the article and seeing how much Vatra wants to make Downpour like SH1-3, I am *extremely* excited for this game.

Whether it turns out any good, it's time Silent Hill had another crack at the current gen of consoles. It wasn't awful but Homecoming just didn't cut the mustard in a great series.
Dead Space is solid but the setting turns some survival horror fans away, RE5 was a joke compared to past entries in the series but if anyone played Heavy Rain or Alan Wake last year they would know the atmospheric potential this game could have. It sucks that it isn't Team Silent but I'm still itching to play it.

1) Nothing new is being introduced into this series that hasn't already been in it. The Silent Hill games have always had side quests, UFO/Dog Endings, the "vial and the liquid" from SH 1, yadda yadda.
2) You forgot to mention boss-fights that are almost exclusively tied to Quick-Time Events only.
3) We might as well just call this game "downpour", exclude Silent Hill from the name. Silent Hill has suffered enough from horrible 3rd party devs, it doesn't need more salt rubbed into the wound.

Side missions in Silent Hill? I don't know, sounds weird. I'll have to wait for reviews then.

@Meghterb1985 Id make a dream sequence with our buddy pyramid. With real action, etc. I'm giving it a chance. By chance I mean buying it. Love silent hill it's my favorite horror game sans Condenmed.
Speaking of, we need a new Condemned. A proper sequel with no focus in multi.

@nesinvaders Same reason I loved it. There have been games that creeped my out or scared me by some "gotcha!" enemy but nothing scared the hell out of my like Condemned.
I had to take breaks it freaked me out so bad. Evil bums with spike bats are the worst.

Akira Yamaoka's music will be greatly missed. But I'm looking forward to a new take on the series.

Pretty sure that team doesn't exist anymore. Time to let go of your clenched fists and give the series a shot again.
