Telltale looks to Heavy Rain for Jurassic Park gameplay design
40
Jurassic Park and Telltale Games may seem like an unlikely combination, but the The Escapist's recap of a new Game Informer magazine interview reveals that IP owner Universal Studios wasn't looking for a straightforward action game, making Telltale a good fit. The developer will still look to add a bit more action to its traditional adventure game framework, telling GI that the game will feature both slower-paced character building and the surprise scares that once propelled the franchise to box office success.
Telltale likens this gameplay balancing act to Quantic Dreams' suspense thriller, Heavy Rain. Aside from the possibility of dinosaurs with out-of-place accents, this means that the Jurassic Park game will feature some element of choice, though it's noted in the interview that the gameplay mechanics are still in the works. Additionally, some of the game's story has been cursorily detailed, revealing sub-plots such as identifying where Dennis Nedry's can of dino embryos ended up post-Dilophosaurus attack and a tie into the first film through the eyes of an unknown character.
Jurassic Park is expected to encompass five episodes, with the first coming to PC and Mac some time this year.

On a more serious note, they better keep that amazing John Williams score from the film. Amazing music.

Heavy Rain would have been much better with Dinosaurs, in my opinion.

I look forward to this, but I take issue with one thing - there shouldn't have been any question about that can of shaving foam and the embryos that Nedry stole. I'm pretty sure that it was stated in the film when he met Dodgson that it only contained enough gas to keep the can cold for 24 hours - it was absolutely in the book anyway.
Other than that - Jurassic Park always brings me (happily) back to my childhood, so I'm glad they're taking a story based approach to this game.

I would love to play a good Jurassic Park game, just not an adventure game version. I've always thought something more like Far Cry 2 on Isla Sorna or Isla Nublar with some survival elements thrown in would be cool. Of course back in the day I used to drool over the early production videos for Jurassic Park: Trespasser so my desire for a decent FPS Jurassic Park game isn't that surprising.

I hope that this is the start of the new inevitable dinosaur hype. They will replace their undead friend with titles such as Plants vs. Dinosaurs etc. Why haven't devs realised that overgrown reptiles are way cooler than zombies?!

Heavy Rain was one of my top 5 favorite games of 2010.
I really like the idea of using stealth and wit to evade the dinosaurs, instead of directly fighting them, which is more in line with the first movie (and some of the third). We've seen JP as an action game so many times, and I'm just not interested in a repeat of that approach. I also LOVE the idea of a somewhat branching story-line and/or multiple solutions to a given scenario.
If they are waiting for a PS3 release so that can do it on bluray at retail, I'm all for that. I still remember seeing Jurassic Park in the theater and the DTS track had the seats shaking! It seems like this game would require 24-bit/48khz lossless audio for the music and dinosaur sound effects. If that means disc-only (or large downloads) for PS3, I'm all for that :)
TellTale really upped their graphical abilities with Sam & Max Season 3 and Back to the Future, but I think it would need an even bigger leap to do Jurassic Park justice. Maybe they'll finally add texture/shader streaming to their engine like every other engine has done for the last 10 years or so? ;)
Anyways, really looking forward to this on PS3!
