I really wanted to properly explore both Pulse and Cocoon. Maybe XIII-2 will allow Square the chance to open up the game world after a disappointingly linear game?

That sounds like a logical, winning strategy to make a game that fixes the linearity of FFXIII while returning the series to glory... but it's Square-Enix so I look forward to another 50-hour adventure of playing dress-up, but in HD this time around.

I'll agree here. I finally started playing again once I picked up an HDTV (got to the middle of disc 2 on SD, but didn't want to complete it without seeing it in HD, CAN SEE glory) and I really would've liked to have had more freedom in Cocoon. I think it would've been better to maybe keep things narrower in Cocoon (it being almost 100% urban and all), but at least allowed you to go to neighboring areas of the area where the story is happening of your own will.

Other than that. I'd like to see what they do if they do make a direct sequel (though I hope they don't announce much until I beat the game in the near future), though I am in agreement with many others that their direct sequel precedent for FF is kinda..."meh" to say the least.

yea a non-linear Cocoon would be awesome. i tell ya, i bought the game at launch and played it some but really wasn't fond of it. it wasn't until a couple months later when i picked it up again that i got to Pulse and really enjoyed it. Pulse felt like a FF game plain and simple. it was so frustrating that they felt they needed to hold my hand for so long with all the forced team changes and linearity. i knew who i wanted to uses a couple chapters in (Light, Hope, Fang) and used them exclusively once i got the chance to. if they make a XIII with less hand holding, count me in.

To be fair to the game, it did have some of the funnest post game content I've played in a final fantasy. But everyone LOVED FFX and it was just as linear as FFXIII. But yeah... after a great exploration game like FFXII it was hard to see the series return to linearity.

I was stoked when I got to Gran Pulse. Then I realized that the biggest area is the archylte steppe. After that, it returns to a straight line map -_-

@Bewoulf Yeah FFX did suffer a little too. I think the main advantage FFX had was that it had proper towns to explore and NPCs to interact with. Had FF13 had those, I think it would have gotten a much better reception.

When I first got to the archylte steppe, I was actually a little overwhelmed and it even put me off the game for a few months. It's hard to go from one extreme to the next. :D

FFX linear is so not the same as FFXIII linear. XIII is just hallway after hallway. X is like here is a big area to explore, but eventually you will have to go to this point to move on with the story.

For me X-2 ruined X for me. I can't even fathom a XIII-2 considering that game was a disappointment anyways. But to be optimistic, maybe it'll fix some of it's problems.

@TraceurRyuk Prepping for LBP2 I really enjoyed X-2. It was nice to see a FF world after it had been saved. The upbeat soundtrack and story were a nice break from all the doom in X. Plus I LOVED how fast the battle system was.

FFXIII at least had a good story and some excellent world lore that I could understand leading to a direct sequel in the same exact universe. It was in the gameplay, pacing, and some of the character development that the game screwed up at.

A sequel could be a chance at redemption for an honestly intriguing world

They did everything with FF7 except make a sequel to it. the one thing all the fans really wanted (ok besides a CG movie, which they did to)

just because they drove the concept into the ground doesnt mean they couldnt pick it back up again, so long as they did it right... who am i kidding, they never will/would.

I'm gonna be honest, VII feels so outdated to me. Yeah, it was great for it's time, but the battles just feel so "mechanical". Where as the one's after that the character's' traits feel like they actually translate into combat.

@TraceurRyuk Prepping for LBP2 I agree it is idiotic but true. Every game has its flaws. By comparison this one had very few. Common ones are it was too linear. They have been for a decade. If people dont like JRPGs then they should simply abaandon them and stick with non-linear WRPGs.

which is fine, just the constant bitching...it never stops. Its a real downer.

Let me rephrase. The game had a lot of flaws. It's not even that it was too linear, it's that it felt unfinished. There was almost no content. You go down a road of monsters, cutscene, more monsters, cutscene, more monsters, cutscene, boss, cutscene. That was literally the whole game. Even the upgrade system was linear. No matter how you upgrade them they all end up the same.

Like I said in another comment, the characters and story was so boring and generic. The only sort of interesting character was Sazh, and he was just the comic relief character. It wasn't a bad game by any means, but to say that the only reason people criticize it is that it went multiplatform seems blind to me.

Personally, I'm ready to forget about XIII and move on. The story seemed a little interesting but the gameplay was just plain boring. I did not enjoy playing XIII and thus my interest in any XIII branded FF games is basically zero.

It's the exact opposite for me. The gameplay had amazing potential but they didn't utilize the system. The thing that made it fail was the linearity, the god awful story, the generic characters, bad dialogue, and repetitive environments.

I will admit I have no framiliarity with the most recent edditions to the series. However what I think you mean to say Is I was never a real Fanboi?

I was a huge fan of the series since it was on wee 8bit cartridges. But as time progressed I found I continued to look forward to and purchase the games but finishing them was another story. The last one I tore through was 7, 8 is sort of a blur. As I recall 9 was great, 10 was.... ok, I totally dodged the 10-2 bullet... 11 was the MMO wasn't it? The only reason they lost me was the "We delete your account if its inactive for X time and you need to rebuy the game BS". I'm not sure what happened to my copy of 12, I was playing it and then I wasn't. I remember liking the battle system in 12, being able to customize my companions actions was a nice touch. (If my numeral recollection is slightly off you will have to forgive me they sorta blur together after a while)

While there where no shortage of non FF RPGs (JRPG or otherwise) that managed to keep me compelled until the very end.

I would almost liken it to Lost, It was really good but it started to stagnate and somewhere around the later seasons I would see a commercial for it and was forced to ask myself "is that's still on?". Then I would start watching it again and at some point remember why I stopped watching it.

Now I'm not saying there are not people out there who still enjoy these games but they have been going slowly down hill for a while now. I would love nothing more for them to make a FF game that pulls me back into the fold .... it just doesn't look like that is in their addenda for the foreseeable future.

So its not that I consider them bad games, just mundane. Graphically stunning yes but mundane.

Of course that is all my opinion and others will vary.
You obviously still take enjoyment from the series and I am glad for you. I hope you continue to enjoy it for years to come.

Does Square Enix realize that they keep making things that less people want and ignoring spending their budget instead on things people are begging for...like Chrono Break and Hitman 5. I think the number XIII mixed with Final Fantasy was tarnished with fans and that all planned XIII games should be renamed. I think Versus should just become FFXV, Agitio XIII should simply be renamed Agito: Final Fantasy, etc. XIV was even worse though.
