CityVille's monthly user population now 100 million strong

We had an inkling this CityVille thing our mom keeps sending us requests in would be a big deal, but we underestimated just how big. After launching and quickly overtaking FarmVille's active monthly user count, Zynga's latest casual hit has now approached "sensation" levels of interest: it's enjoying over 100 million active users right now.

Casual Gaming reports there are now a total of 100,064,578 monthly active users. FarmVille's active monthly user count hovers around 57 million. Now, in case you don't quite get how big a deal this is, know that CityVille only launched on December 2, 2010 -- FarmVille's been on Facebook since June of 2009. So, in under seven weeks, Zynga's managed to usurp the most popular game on Facebook and almost double its user count.

Actually, now that we think about it, can you usurp yourself? Eh, we're sure Zynga's far too busy counting cash money to ponder such matters.

They're made by the same company, so I don't think they're "taking over" anything.

This is more an indication of people not sticking with facebook games very long rather than indicating Cityville is some marvel over Farmville. I am sure Farmville's active user account dwarfed 100 million at its height.

I don't think that statement is accurate at all. Not only was Farmville's peak active user level only 84 million, CityVille has reached this new level in a much shorter time frame.

So in a decade's time, is gaming going to be limited to three games - WoW for PC, COD for consoles and PlanetVille for everyone else? :)

Crap! I don't play any of those three games. I guess when your future comes, I'll just have to stop playing video games. Lame.

I'm sure other companies are watching the amount of cash they're raking in. If this continues I fear the next generation of consoles will have functions to accommodate the kind of nauseating tactics Zynga employs -built in-.

Tried out some of the "Ville" games last night.

Neat.

Nothing I am going to pay for. They try really hard to get you to invite other people, and to get you to pay money for things, but they each seem playable enough.

They also have an EVE like feel to them. You can leave them alone with tasks that take days to complete and come back to them later.
