John Koller, director of hardware marketing for PlayStation, acknowledged to the Wall Street Journal that Microsoft's 8 million shipped Kinect units amount to a "very impressive" figure, though he assured that his company is still "happy where we are in the market" with Move. As of the end of November, Sony had shipped 4.1 million units of its motion controller and believes it has an edge over Microsoft in the race to earn the hard-won affections of the "hardcore" consumer. That's you, right?
"The limitations are such that you can't create all the games you want to do," Koller suggested of Kinect, implying that Microsoft's controller-less technoloy lacks the precision control necessary to support so-called "core" titles -- just what Sony has in mind for Move in the coming months.
The apparent strategy involves "layering on more and more core titles," Koller explained, and there are at least two Sony titles around the corner that fit the bill.
While Move was intended to launch with core support in SOCOM 4, that game's delay to April, coupled with Killzone 3 in late February, means that Sony will have two of its core franchises equipped with Move support in the market within a few months. Microsoft and Kinect? Still zero.
In a recent preview of Killzone 3's Move controls, our own Rany Nelson concluded, "I am now committed to using the Move for my first full playthrough of the game. Not only does its integration seem justified to me, but I'm sold on its improved accuracy and greater sense of immersion over the DualShock controller." Koller and Sony sure hope a lot more of us core-types will be sold, too.
[Thanks, Devin]

Me too. I plan on buying Move and the Killzone controller shell when they drop in February. The reviews and videos have me sold it's an upgrade as far as PS3 FPSs go.

I think it's more that core titles really need buttons. Forza is an exception because you mimmick the operation of a car, which is done sitting down.
That said I saw a really good hack using kinect with a wiimote that looked like it would be good for most games.

good luck playing a racing game with no controllers. sure, it might have some sort of head tracking, and even have some mode where you can 'steer'... but a racing game without a controller would feel like... air. not to mention, early reports on racing games for Kinect have been so so at best.

@MrAlex MAG isn't like COD where equipment makes or breaks the game, smart tactics and not running out in the open will serve you tremendously until you level up. The only thing that is a must is to buy a scope or red dot sight asap, after that the rest is up to how you play.

@MrAlex I've been using the Move with MAG for a while now, and once you get the controller setup EXACTLY the way you want it, and IF you are willing to get your ass handed to you until you do, it works well. BTW, it took me weeks to get the setup EXACTLY the way I wanted, but I really like it now. I think if you are willing to suffer for a while it does eventually give you a bit of an advantage (except for knifing/mele). People with Dual Shock only have to push a button to mele, but with the Move, you have to make a slashing move. Its ok, but it does take longer to execute the move.
Oh, ya, and talking about MAG. It is the best shooter bar none IF you are actually into teamwork. The point system is excellent at forcing people to act as a team. If you do, you can almost depend of doubling your points in a game. Get a bluetooth earpiece for this game or you miss a lot!.

I personally think this is a wrong idea. I have no complaints about the PS3 normal controller, why would I want to buy 130$ worth of equipment to play a game which works completely fine with existing controllers?
I think Sony should concentrate on newer experiences for the Move Controller esp. ones which would be unwieldy with a normal controller.

I agree. I've said it before, you would think Sony would want to put more innovation into move than to mimick what the NES could do (Duck Hunt). LBP2 is a start but like you said, marketing move as only an option will only hurt Sony in the long run & just add to their growing debt. Half the people say "Killzone 3 will be nice to 'try' with move" Not saying Move is a bad product. I'm just saying Sony should've marketed it smarter.

Did you even read the story? Sony is going to concentrate on 'Core' games for Move controller. My comment was in relation to that.
If the concentration from first party is going to be 'Core' titles for Move which I can play perfectly fine with the DualShock controller why would I care about Move support.?
My wish is that Sony & its studios instead concentrate on newer experiences just like Dance Central is (which only exists for the Kinect btw). Frankly, their strategy of bite sized games is awesome for the Move & they should concentrate on that & enhance that.

Because Sony already did Dance Central 6 years ago with EyeToy: Groove? Because Sony already did Your Shape Fitness with Kinetic? Because Nintendo, the supposed innogvators of this motion control shit has all but abandoned the notion of motion reliance? Sony is focusing on "Core" games because that's what Nintendo detracters have been claiming they wanted from this technology for 5 years now.
I'm all for "new" experiences but eventually the brochure becomes dated and you realize all this new motion technology is still "flail arm instead of pressing A." I'd rather they spend more time going "how can we apply this technology to gaming" instead of "How can we redefine what minigames are?"

I wanted to like Move, but really...it's an improved Wii remote. That said I do intend to get one--just not at the full retail price. I expect the launch bundles to wind up in the bargain bin by May :p
I got my Kinect for $20 basically (bundled with a new 360 slim 250GB for $319 and free shipping), and for that price I can't complain. I see no major issues with accuracy, and the fact that it can be used in conjunction with a buttony controller is a good sign.
Microsoft and Sony were CLEARLY both shooting for the casual market as Target Zero with their motion controllers (they already had the "core" market nailed), and I do think they were in error to focus on that market to the exclusion of the core at launch.
That said...I expect 2011 to remedy many of those issues for both Move and Kinect. Without a doubt, though, Kinect will continue to outsell Move handily, as it has a "next gen" feel to it, whereas Move has a "been there, done that" feel to it.

Publicly they aren't announcing any games for the kinect, my brother who owns a video game store just got a list of games that MS has given to the distributor and based on the list they have somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 kinect games they gave them.
Considering the fact they don't know anything beyond a release date and title, he's not sure what kind of games they are, but sega has a haunted house style game coming out this year for the kinect. It is nice to see that sony is gonna give the move a chance by focusing on using it on core games but I returned my move because the lighting in my house was too low wattage for the playstation eye to work properly with it.
I use 15 watt energy saver lights to cut my power bill down and the playstation eye and move controller weren't working properly, don't have that issue with the kinect though. so far I have issues with kinect if it's not at the proper height which seems to be about 5 feet off the ground, neither kinect nor move seem to be perfect.

What about an fallout where you actually get to choose what you say & based on how you said it or how you looked while you said it, the people would react to it. You wouldn't need to shoot with Kinect, you could move & shoot with the controller. The point of Kinect is to connect you with the games, not necessarily just to play without a controller. Putting you in the game to interact with the characters. What do you think the Milo demo was. To show the interaction between player & character. Breaking the 4th wall of gaming. That's the potential of Kinect.

You do know the people who bought Kinect could care less about what games are coming. You act like casual gamers actually pay attention to release dates. They're still having fun with Kinectimals, Dance Central & Kinect Adventures. It's the core gaming community that is waiting for a Kinect game for them so they can be persuaded to buy one. Core gamers already bought Move because of games like Socom & Killzone so of course they'll have something to look forward too while people who bought Kinect already have what they wanted

I bought Move basically about a week or 2 after it launched and I'm disappointed in the lack of core titles for it. Sure there's gonna be Move-compatible games but I'm looking for Move-exclusives games for it. you know?
Posted: Jan 14th 2011 9:33PM Prboi said
The thing I was getting at is Kinect has more potential than Move. Move already has the momentum to be utilized fully thanks to the Wii. Sure Sports Champions feels good & new for yoy, but Wii owners already experienced those types of games. Like I said in a comment above, Kinect really has the potential to really connect you with the game (No pun intended). Remember project Milo? That was just an example of how you can interact with the character in the game. Now with the facial scanning, the game can really recognize anger, sadness, happiness etc. You could really be in the game with the characters reacting based on your faces, actions & words. It really doesn't matter if you like that or not, it's revolutionary. Right now, all core gamers see is the kid stuff when they don't realize that's just to get Kinect into homes as fast as possible. Once they have a large number of people with Kinect, then they'll start talking about core titles. Developers are still getting used to Kinect since it's more abstract to work with than Move since the basic development strategy for move has been around for 4 years already
