I know this may sound crazy, but why don't they try this for X-Box Live Arcade?

@IRONSAM

Doubt consoles can handle it.

Yes it looks crap, but It eats resources so much. Only my gaming PC can handle it decently.

Because, technically, this is still a beta-test. And I don't think even the Indie games community accepts betas. Even if they are this awesome.

Consoles could handle it. If it was coded properly. but that is the main issue right there. Its in java, and it would have to be completely re written in C or CPP or something to actually work. The game is waaaaayyy too far along to ever think about re writing. Yes sure, java is universal for pcs, but the limits make it otherwise kind of suckish.

@Faenix No. Minecraft only works well on the Sun JVM (which is proprietary). Sun - er, Oracle would have to have Microsoft license them so they could make a JVM port. They'd also need Microsoft's approval and Microsoft doesn't really like Java, for several reasons including the fact that they were one sued by Sun for writing their own extensions to the JVM. That's why they made .NET in the first place.

Plus, bytecode-compiled languages don't do so well on a system where code signing is enforced by a hypervisor. You'd have to give up Hotspot JIT in favor of direct code interpretation, because you can't make a secure console if code is free to write arbitrary bytes to executable pages.

The only real option would be a Java-to-C compiler like gcj but AFAIK it's not widely used and I doubt LWJGL works with one of those things.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that Xbox 360 does not support OpenGL. Period. This isn't as insurmountable as "Can't run Java on 360" but it does mean a few weeks of writing Direct3D support and having to test obscure hardware bugs.

Not to mention that Minecraft's multiplayer servers would have to be stripped out in favor of Xbox Live. That means no server admins or server mods. This, if anything, is a dealbreaker, even if Notch were to get Minecraft running on the 360. All the things I mentioned before were technical hurdles - you can't bypass Microsoft's online infrastructure. They wouldn't even let FF14 on the 360; I highly doubt Minecraft would get special permission to use already-existing Minecraft servers.

because i'd hate to know what Microsoft would tell notch to do to his game just to have it in XBLA , no free updates thats for sure... i hope it never happens actually, console politics don't deserve to mess with such a awesome game IMHO.

plus theres that comment someone made about it not being able to run properly (unless its written to run on the system) ... i have a MacBook Pro 15" i5 laptop and it still slows down when i have it set to FAR rendering, and even more laggy when i have it set to FAR and i go exploring new areas. It could just be a Mac thing.

@IRONSAM Guys, quit voting this guy down. It's a legitimate question, which has actually been addressed by Notch at one point, I believe.

Anyway, the whole game is written in Java, which isn't supported by the Xbox. It would require them to completely port the game to C. That'd take a long time, but it is possible. If there's even a remote chance of a port, however, it'll be long after release. It's not likely.

@IRONSAM Minecraft is written in Java. Java can't run on the Xbox because it doesnt have a Java virtual machine running on it.

The cake IS a lie to the testers that are playing it. They are promised cake upon completing the course but are instead rewarded with fire-y death.

No, it's always been there.

After the lab explodes, it shows you blacking out, then it goes back into the building, and flies thru a series of tunnels, and you see the cake, and the Companion Cube.

The ONLY thing the update did was instead of you blacking out immediately, you now hear something say "Thank you for assuming the party escort position", see something grab your legs, and start dragging you.

Ya know...I asked the same question a couple of months ago and was *really* skeptical because it seemed very thrown together and looked like a screwed up Qbert but more involved...I got varied responses from the internet but didn't really 'get' it. Then I saw the game was give or take 10$ at the time so I ran with it cause it was pretty cheap and I figured what the hell.

...now I play the damn thing pretty regularly and its completely eaten entire nights in seconds....what has it done?

Now what its about really...? Well pretty much take a lego set...make it real, then take harvestable resources from every end of the spectrum and give the player to create things out of various materials (not everything..yet) and throw in a few enemies that can spawn in from the shadows of anything and this is what you get.

Yeah, it still needs some work here and there...but after I punched a tree and got some wood...In a few hours, I ended up with a mountain base complete with a waterfall irrigation system, dug under it and found a dungeon with even more resources (that I still haven't found the bottom of yet...:p) and now I pretty much have a fortress spanning 2 continents after a day or so. Add in a whole new 'inverse' world that is nothing but angry in there, any machine capable of running Java, can run this, and multiplayer....

Yeah...its not bad at all really. Still needs a lot of work, but what's already there won't disappoint.

And if your the type that likes to play simulation games..., you should have this already.

It's Lego, with optional enemies and a never-ending world (more or less). You mine stuff and then convert that stuff into more valuable stuff.

I wondered the same thing. figured I'd see mines, crafting, the like.

instead I watched someone build and ride a rollercoaster, and then found the titanic and starship enterprise. just get it, fall in love, have her break up with you cause you play too much minecraft. :-)

Go check out the free 'classic' multiplayer servers on the website and it'll give you a sort of idea as to how much could be done in the old version, and the new version is a lot more complex.

I'm sure its happening as we type Evo. Locking someone into a room is easy enough, a pressure plate connected to an iron door to close it, then maybe something to fall and break the circuit connection.
