The article makes it sound like the DS could play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, which it couldn't. To nitpick a little.

The thing that annoys me most about the "e-shop" though is that there's really no reason that the Virtual Console from the Wii couldn't be part of it. The 3DS is more than capable of emulating games from the SNES/Mega Drive era and above.

I don't get why Nintendo wouldn't expand it to the 3DS, I bet there are plenty of people who would be willing to shell out for Super Mario World on their 3DS. That being said GB/GBC (and hopefully GBA at some point) VC is cool, especially since I've lost my copies of Super Mario Land 1 and 2.

I think they don't let you buy SNES and NES for your 3DS because they would have to make people buy the same games again if they bought it on Wii because there is no connections between systems. I guess they decided they whored out their classics enough that it isn't worth looking like douche bags.

@FriedConsole Ah but there will be connections with the systems, they're already talking about transfering your Miis.

Alot of that stuff is tied your Nintendo account too so I imagine it wouldn't be too hard for people to register that with their 3DS so they could transfer any Wii VC games over to their 3DS.

The DS could play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. I played Pokemon on it a lot, it just stuck out and wasn't flush with the system.

@Buddylicious It definitely couldn't. Presumably you're referring to GBA games, which it did play and as you say stuck out from the system (at least in the Lite version, it was fine for the original).

They could run it through your Nintendo Club account. You reigster both your Wii and 3DS, as the account already recognises any games I've downloaded and gives me Club points for the WiWare games.

"After losing backwards compatibility with Game Boy games with the DSi, we're especially happy about having that feature back in the 3DS"

really? so you're glad you're gonna have to re-buy a game you probably own already and is very likely in working condition.

I hope your past purchases on the VC stay or transfer over

Then just continue playing your GB games on... Your old GB?
It's not like they're forcing you to buy them and it's only a few bucks.
All my old game stuff is dusty, so I like the option of not having to deal with dust, it's also nice for those that either no longer have the old hardware/games or never had them at all.

That aside, if it really rustles your jimmies you could always wait for the homebrew scene to hack the 3DS and make pirating on it as simple as the Wii.

No doubt, I bet they are just low priority because so many people still have a GBA/DS. But give it a couple years and demand for GBA will be much higher.

More like they can start charging tax on the games bought digitally...

Generally you don't have to know how much 1500 MS points translates to, as things work in sets of 400 most of the time. But, in case you're curious, 1500 points would be $18.75.

Also, wouldn't you expect NOT to know how much 1500 MS points really is if you don't own an Xbox?

Your comment confuses me....

Yeah, but PSN taxes you directly for your e-transactions, in addition to getting taxed for buying the card at a store. So Nintendo online is actually cheaper.

Maybe I just have a skewed view of their worth, but to me $8 for an SNES game is a bit steep. $5 for games from the first-gen systems is even worse. Personally I'd go for $5 for "common" SNES games and $8 for the rare/uncommon games with little demand (like lesser known JRPGs).

For C64 and other such games I'd be willing to pay maybe $1-$3 depending on the title. I mean they generally offer much less than a $1 iPhone app does, and half of the companies involved have probably already gone under anyways.

It's a shame DSiWare titles mostly suck. Like, 1 of 20 are worth the price of admission. Hopefully quality control goes up for these.

Bit sad there is no GBA virtual console. I'd totally be all for this if that was the case. But really, outside of Zelda Oracle of Seasons/Ages and the WindFish one, not sure what would even interest me. Rather just buy more recent pkmn then blue/red/yellow. What other GB/C games are worth picking up?

No, they're calling it money now, but it will surely work just the same way as when it was points; except with a currency symbol in front and a dot in the middle somewhere.

Game Boy and Game Boy Color. You serious?

The machine wasn't designed to even be able to run NES, SNES and N64 titles and no ability to link the device to your nintendo account along with your other registered products?

That's what I would call, piss-poor engineering.

Okay, Nintendo: STOP!
When implementing the GB/GBC emulators please make the buttons configurable! It felt awkward playing GBA games on the DS with its button layout. Especially platformers. Jump on A and "action" on B worked well in the Gameboy series of handhelds, but the DS has the same button layout as the SNES, so "jump" on B and "action" on Y would be more common. In other words: Include an option to make DS B = GB A and DS Y = GB B.
Now... Proceed!

I'm sorry, I need to get this off my chest...

I'm all for backward compatibility, resale of used older games and such, but when companies introduce a system where they resell games from previous consoles onto a new console I feel its almost an escape route from coming up with new, innovative games. Rather than develop a new story, game, and experience, or even a sequel to a deserving game, developers can just throw up older games that they KNOW people will buy.

I can't say I'm not part of this issue; I currently own Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my N64, Gamecube, and Wii. Now its coming out on the 3DS? Thats going to make gangbusters.

At the very least, I'd love to see HD remakes (or even complete overhall of the graphics and sprites) of these older games, and I'm excited that developers have started doing so. Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen, Beyond Good & Evil, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Sly Cooper, God of War.....

PLEASE, developers, at the very least give me a new experience if you're going to sell me an older game. I'd love to see Final Fantasy VII remade rather than rehashed on PSN. I understand from a business perspective its more time, effort, and money to do so, but the audience will love you more than you can fathom for it.

No, I'm painfully aware of the hypocrisy. This strong opinion of mine wasn't really formed till after I purchased Zelda on my Wii. It was more to give an example.

I can't say that I wasn't part of the initial "classic game resale" movement, but I stand by my opinion wholeheartedly.

The problem with digital purchases on the Wii and DSi is that they were tied to your console, not your account. Even though you could look up a record of all the things you had purchased, you could only download/play them on the console they were purchased on, and if anything happened to your console (lost, replaced, etc.) you lost all the games you had purchased and could not re-download them.

I find this inexcusable and as much as I like the idea of playing GB/GBC games on the 3DS I won't be purchasing anything from nintendo digitally if this is the case for the 3DS.

All you have to do is e-mail Nintendo and they'll unlink the DSi or Wii from your account and then your newconsole (if you choose to get one) will be able to redownloadd everything you bought. It happened to my friend.

Joystiq: "Users will be able to transfer any DSiWare games they've already purchased to the 3DS."

Bzzzzzzzzt... try again. Won't work for every game.

Official 3DS site: "DSiWare games & applications purchased on a Nintendo DSi or a Nintendo DSi XL system also can be transferred to your Nintendo 3DS. Some software may not be transferred."

That said, Nintendo has stated before that almost everything should transfer. Still a cool and much needed feature.

It might be an issue with 3rd party stuff that they would no longer retain the rights to sell, either that or some of the more mundane DSiWare stuff (like the calculator or calendar) that Nintendo gave away for free and would be pointless to reproduce

My guess is everything *worth* transferring will transfer, kinda like with the whole XBLA "delisting" debacle a while ago, sounded way worse than it actually was

I don't trust any Nintendo online marketplace. They couldn't get it right on the Wii, or the DSi, so they're pretty much starting over with this eShop, and they still don't have it right.

There is no reason the DSi can't emulate GB/GBA games, it's just poor management. Before introducing and new marketplace, Nintendo really needs to lay the foundation for a system of connectivity, like the Steam Cloud or XBL.

Purchases from the Wii Shop and DSi Shop should all be transferable to the 3DS, similar to how this connectivity works between the PSN and PSP. The 3DS can clearly handle N64 games, so anything else would run with no problems.

Oh wait… Ocarina of Time is already on the Wii Shop, and if it were transferable it would cut into profits of yet another Ocarina of Time re-hash. -_-

Nintendo is so so so so so far behind in online services, it's not even funny anymore, it's just sad. The original Xbox had a better online foundation than Nintendo does, and that was ten years ago!
