"3DS features only one Friend Code"

See, when the whole FC thing was announced for Wii back in 2006 this is exactly what I had pictured. The game specific FCs were just dumb and *clearly* avoidable as more than a handful of the better online titles for Wii side stepped this ridiculous issue.

Still kind of disappointing that it's still a "Friend Code" rather than a user name of some kind.

But whatever. This is still waaay better than before.

I assume your screen name will be whatever you call your system, like the DS, meaning you can choose the exact name you want, even if someone else has it.

It's just like a phone number. Not so bad at all if you ask me. This was the best news to come out of the event.

I would prefer using a friend code rather than having to create a unique user name. Unique user names can get pretty insane.

Really? so you think some random 16 digit number is easier than a 4-10 character name?

Have you ever used XBL or PSN?

Great step, but how is the online experience laid out? I'd like something at least half as robust as PSN.

So this doesn't apply to evergreen Mario Kart DS, and other popular online DS games that are played on the 3DS, right?

Sounds like Mario Kart 3DS will be on the horizon.

I assumed that would be the case since Nintendo has Mariokart on all of their other platforms except NES and virtualboy.

A step in the right direction This should have been the start of a nintendo wide username. Guess we'll hope for the Wii's successor to launch this. Nintendo is generations behind in the online world.

The funny thing is I would love to see how many children actually went online with Wii/DSi compared to the older crowd.

Would be ironic, the demographic they are attempting to protect probably hardly even uses the service.

I've been out of this DS world for a while, but I'm planning to get a 3DS... What's the argument against, yknow, usernames?

@The Albatross: I suppose Nintendo is still trying to market to families with a budget. I'm sure there's a technical reason their online service is lacking as well, but I'm not privy to that.

Why is it still bad?

You still can't communicate with strangers.

You still can't add strangers to your friends list.

Yes you can. Nintendo said that if you play with a stranger in online play, the 3DS will add them to your friend list.

Maybe they will? Both Black ops Wii and The Conduit 2 ( coming out in a month) let you communicate with strangers and add them to your friends list. Nintendo is starting to realize that the friend code system is a bad idea.

This is a sure move forward but goodness it's certainly not as flexible as some other options. You have to wonder what Nintendo thinks some times.

2. Do something shitty(slightly less so). Praise, sell millions.

Hopefully a display name system is implemented. That would make this a thousand times better. Especially if you could have the same name as some idiot who took a name years ago but hasn't logged on since.

If not, meh.

Thank god it is unified now. Perhaps Nintendo is taking Online/Social gaming seriously now. What with the immense success of Xbox LIVE, Steam, PSN, and *shudder* Facebook.

I hope once the code is entered and the friend is added their name will default to a name said friend has given themselves. I hated having to name my friends for Smash Brothers one by one and you can't just leave them as random numbers.

Nintendo is starting to take online gaming seriously(although a little slowly) The Wii version of Black Ops lets you add recent players to your friends list with out having their friend code as well as let people use voice chat with other people that aren't in their friends list. The Conduit 2 is also gonna have these features. Hopefully they'll do the same thing on the 3DS.

I think friend codes are better then gamertags/psn ids now since you can make your name whatever you want without having to worry that someone else is using it.
