@liam

why do people care so much about this? as long as everyone knows what's being discussed, why does it matter what someone calls it?

the US already has a sport called "football," so we're never to going to stop calling traditional football "soccer." get over it.

besides, the term "soccer" actually originated in the UK, derived from the "soc" in "association football."

@maveric101 I don't think it's really as big a deal as you might think.

Mostly is provides playful banter between us and you folks in the US!

We do find it amusing that our game literally as all about a round ball and feet, though, whereas yours is a bit further from the obvious meaning the name implies :P

dude, shut up. you're making reasonable Americans like me look bad.

Americans will call it "soccer," and the rest of the world will call it "football." that's not going to change (because of the existence of american football). i don't see the problem as long as everyone knows what we're talking about.

Why?

Jokingly: Because we know it annoys you guys
Seriously: Because thats the actual name, only Americans that don't watch it get it wrong, those that actually have an interest in it from America call it football.

Actually if I'm not mistaken the term football was created to differentiate between games played "on foot" as in running as opposed to games played on horseback like polo and fox hunting which were usually played by the rich so it was also a bit of a class distinction. Hence that is why Association Football (soccer), Rugby Football, American Football, and Australian Rules Football are all 4 distinct games that are all often referee to as just football in areas where they are each the most popular.

It means we're gonna get totally ripped-off with pricing. Retails will set it to about £210-£230.

@WPstart

$249.99 -> €249.99 -> £210~ + 20% VAT (£42~) = £250

Or, Nintendo could not be complete arses and actually currency convert for once in their existence and do us right:

$249.99 -> €180/190~ -> £150/160~ + 20% VAT (£30~) -> £180~

But let's be honest, Nintendo Europe haven't dropped the price of the DS once, the DS Lite is still £99.99, despite many price cuts in the US and Japan. The DSi landed in US/Japan for the ORIGINAL price of the DS, however they slapped £50 onto the price of the DS Lite for the DSi, even more for the DSi XL. So this shafting with pricing was already well expected. The 3DS needs to be sub-£200 for it so succeed. They're pricing casual gamers out of the equation here, and the DS only thrived once they were on-board last time. If they shaft Europe like this, they've lost a LOT of buyers, especially in a time of economic downturn, especially in markets where we're about to be hit by hard by austerity measures taking place in many European countries, the UK included.

tl;dr: Europe getting shafted again, good luck importing a cheaper American model because they've region locked the thing. Nintendo laughing their way to the bank. Thanks Nintendo, love you lots!

@SSUK

To be fair, most companies screw you over by simply removing the Euro symbol, and sticking the $ on it.

Even Valve, which does a ton of it's business online, does the same thing.

Is it fair? No. Is Nintendo the only one who does it? No.

Don't forget US prices are always quoted without tax added on - UK (and Europe I think) always have VAT added in the price.

@mattyapc Indeed. A direct conversion from the US price would be £156.32 + 20% VAT = £195.40. As such, a fair retail price in the UK would be, say £199.99 (just under a fiver more than the USA).

There is no chance at all we’ll get a fair price, though.

That's sooner than I expected, actually. Of course I'm interested in the 3DS but I really need to see the effect and hold it before I decide if I'm buying - the DS Lite was very uncomfortable for me to play with.

Hopefully Amazon will eventually get it under 200, maybe 199. That 1 at the front has a big advantage over any other price points.

Either way, hopefully I'll be doing well enough to have exams until February 2012, then it is 3DS all the way.

More info leaking out via Vooks:

Using a service that will be provided after the hardware’s launch, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL owners will be able to transfer games downloaded from the Nintendo DSi Shop onto their new Nintendo 3DS systems.

The Nintendo eShop, (only available after a firmware update) will offer access to downloadable games, including Nintendo DSiWare and ones specifically made for Nintendo 3DS. Also, just as the Virtual Console service on Wii makes retro games available for download, the Virtual Console games on Nintendo 3DS will be pulled from classic Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Players will be able to view game videos, download demos for select games and see how other consumers rated the games. The Nintendo eShop will use a cash-based system. Users can either input credit card information in the shop or purchase a Nintendo 3DS Prepaid Card at retail locations.

Excellent! :D

Not happy with the price... Not happy at all.

They should have announce our RRP's instead of handing them to the stores... In comparison we're being ripped off... Add this to the fact i can't import due to region locking and the situation worsens...

At £156 from direct conversion(USD), and something like £186 (from Yen). I would have imported in a heartbeat.
