Yo, readers: Sony heard you like shooting, so it put a shooter in your shooter so you can shoot while you're shooting. More specifically, the publisher has announced that both regular and Helghast Edition copies of Killzone 3 will include vouchers which give early access to the SOCOM 4 multiplayer beta.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the beta will arrive at the same time as Killzone 3's launch -- Zipper Interactive's Chris Roper explained on PlayStation Blog, "To find out when the SOCOM 4 multiplayer beta begins, be sure to check back at SOCOM.com once you pick up your copy of Killzone 3, hitting shelves on February 22nd." Perfect; so we'll have some time to get really used to Killzone 3's control scheme before switching over to SOCOM 4's presumably wildly different control scheme. We anticipate that we'll be eating quite a few of our own accidentally-thrown frag grenades.

@Ellimem More than enough for me. SOCOM is still, imo, exactly what an online shooter should be. It wasn't perfect in any way but it had a lot of things right that none of these other shooters have come close to yet, most specifically the lobby, clan ladder, leader boards and how matches were made. I've been itching for a SOCOM that wasn't glichy and not like that last one. Online only? Really? Glad they're not doing that again.

@Apollo26 inFamous pulled it before KZ3. Uncharted 2 beta.

The difference is Microsoft packaged a hyped beta (Halo 3) in a mediocre game (Crackdown). Whereas Sony is packaging Socom 4 beta in a Tripple A title (Killzone 3). So no Sony didn't "pull a Crackdown". Unless you are simply referring to Sony just packaging a Beta with another title.
Having said that, anyone who complains doesn't like free sh** plain and simple. Don't like Socom, just enjoy your copy of KZ3 OR sell/give away your Socom Beta code.

Cool. If the release dates were the other way round in soem type of alternate dimension, I think it would be a better business idea.
I see it this way:
If I had a PS3, Killzone 3 would be a must, SOCOM 4... not so much. But throw in a beta with SOCOM 4 and I would probably be on board. Figuratively speaking, of course.

I'm personally the other way around. Socom games are great. At least in the past they have had quite a following. I'm not trying to say Killzone does or doesn't, I haven't played any of them yet.

I like the Killzone series and have played the Socom series since the original however I wouldn't go as far as to say one is better than the other since they are different. Not to mention the fact that the Socom series has been lack luster since Socom 2 or arguably Socom 3.
I loved KZ2 MP but I still have a special place in my heart for Socom's clan based multiplayer. I just hope Zipper can revitalize this series.

Comments like that are reason enough to say no to drugs.
Besides the portable SOCOM games the series only had one good game, while KZ has had 2 two great games(I used my time machine to play KZ3).
And although many did not KZ1, I for one liked it.

That's cool that they're including the early beta access with both copies. I'm DEFINATELY getting KZ3, but just the regular edition instead of the Helghast edition. Can't afford it! :)

Metacritic and most others beg to differ that killzone isn't a reason to get a PS3. The time is more than right. Little Big Planet 2 just launched and we're getting KZ3 next month. Nevermind the other awesome sauce like GT5, Gof of War 3 & Uncharted 2. Go for it.

Metacritic aside, Killzone 2 was technically more-than-adequate, but artistically uninspired. I can't imagine they're going to be reinventing the wheel with the sequel. But hey, it's your money.

@BabySeaTuna
I was pretty impressed with the most recent story trailer they released.
( http://www.gametrailers.com/video/ces-11-killzone-3/709020 ) Other than that, the game is taking place on Vekta this time and not the more rusted and industrialized Helghan. Guerilla has already revealed an ice / snow level and they've announced there will also be a jungle level.
( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOSnR9I1src ) watch this short video and pause around the 4-5 second mark to see Sev running through what looks like a strange jungle like habitat. It seems Guerilla is really trying to have more diversity in their color pallette.
To each his own I suppose but I think now that the technology behind the game is already in place there will be more in terms of storytelling, game design and other subtle nuances that will take the third installment of the series from technical achievement to a strong contender for overall game of the year.

I get where you're coming from, I like Guerilla and hope they'll make a good game too, but it's 2011 and adding a snow level and a jungle level can hardly be considered innovative (I hope you're listening too, Gears of War)

I really enjoyed Killzone 2, even if the story wasn't compelling. It was just so beautiful of a shooter.
Talking about it here makes me want to want to play it when I get home tonight.

MAG 2 does sound pretty exciting. i'm not the type to constantly bring up old incidences, and i kno Zipper Interactive is at the helm of the franchise again, but /6 put a bad taste in my mouth that's long gone and will never be forgotten.
my hopes are guarded for the time being till i get my hands on the game myself. out of all that i must say KZ3 got me itching for a round or two!
