The (admittedly incomplete) history of gaming in 4 minutes

An (almost) one-shot video chronicling the evolution of console gaming by design students from Germany may be incomplete (they acknowledge as much), but it's the clever presentation that makes it worth watching. The piece hits major points by kicking off with the Oscilloscope from 1958, the NES from the 80s and then does its best to keep up after the 16-bit generation kicks in during the '90s.
Remember, it's a student project that was assembled in a brief amount of time. However, if some souls out there think they can do a better, professional full-scale version, we'd love to see that -- heck, we bet everyone would.

Not sure how historically important Defender of the Future is, but it's more about the concept than any historical representation etc. Very impressive.
Nice cameo from ARI at the end.

@wcarnation The main problem is that, after a certain point, it gets hard to do. Sure, your major PC platforms in the 80s are really easy to point out, but eventually everything gets so open that software is far more universal and iconic than hardware, and when you get to that point you're stuck with a really subjective view of what was "important" at that point...
I would like to see a "history of arcades", though.

a few years ago in OZ they had a show like that in a museum in Melbourne. it was a few really big rooms with a bunch of technologically important video games. heaps of arcade machines and console games. it was pretty cool.
I don't know if it ever made it to the states but yeah it had an old original pong machine all the way up to halo3 with concept art for a a bunch of games too

@bxgt Does everything posted on Joystiq have to be news? Are you personally offended that this wasn't some breaking story?

@Punchdrunkbrian Not really, what does offend me is that machinima has been gracefully doing this for over a year and this half assed video gets front page.

obviously this can't be a complete list, so i don't want to be overly picky. but i'm confused by the game chosen to represent the NES being....donkey kong? i understand that was the game that introduced the mario character, but was that even available for the NES? I could've sworn that was atari 2600?

Atari 2600 would never be able to make a Donkey Kong version that looked Arcade-perfect.

ahhh, thanks for the clarification guys.
i still think there would've been a better representation of the nes (super mario bros comes to mind, or even legend of zelda), but like i said, maybe it is because donkey kong was the first "mario game", just doesn't seem like the game you would think of when you think of the NES.

Heh. I owned "Donkey Kong" for the 2600. Credit to the programmers for being able to approximate the basic gameplay at all on the 2600's limited resources, but wow did it look like garbage.
FWIW, I would credit Colecovision for introducing "Donkey Kong" to more Americans than the NES. It was the original pack-in game with the system, and Coleco had playable kiosks in just about every department store at the time.

For a student project, this is pretty cool.
Obviously, no matter which games they did they would have people complaining about you should have put X in or took Y out, but I think they had a pretty good selection.

I find it odd that they jumped over the Xbox, Xbox 360, Atari 2600, and PS2. They seem pretty necessary.
Saturn, TG-16, and Master System would have been nice.
Other than that, I have no complaints. Excellently done.

I thought using Donkey Kong on NES was an odd choice, too. I did like how he tossed the Wiimote, I guess he tossed some of the others too, but I really noticed it on the golf swing with the Wiimote.
Certainly not a perfect historical representation of gaming through the ages, but worth a watch.
