This sounds like it's turning out to be the Sony Tablet as opposed to the PSP2.

Well in all honesty, i can not imagine the usefulness of 3G, as it would take ages to download any regular PSN game (not minis or comic books). And i doubt it could handle multiplayer. However, someone did say something about an ipad feel to the possible psp2, which does make sense, and then 3G could be more useful.

I am very curious!

I'm finding it hard to believe that the PSP2 will be download only.
The EU PSN especially is bullcrap. I haven't bought a single PSN game since October last year because

1) prices are too high
2) no cross-region downloads

I know those 2 aren't a problem for Sony but I promise you this - limit the way people can purchase items and you will limit your profit. The PSP is great because for those people who want to waste money you can buy them on PSN OR you can get the UMD. Sony has both bases covered.

The Go was a failure because it cost too much. So they lowered the cost. Then they gave away TEN games in Europe whilst it was cheap and it was still a flop. If that isn't a cry for "WE WANT UMD" then I don't know what is. Store presence is also massively important - iPhone gets away with it because, by nature, the iPhone has a permanent net connection to acquire those games no matter what model you buy.

I don't know. If Sony want to pull a stupid they'll have no optical media in the PSP-2.

That kind of thing would turn me off as a consumer. It's not as if we're going to be starved of new handheld content this year (thanks Nintendo, you may have some form of region locking but at least you let us play our existing DS libraries on new machines).

TBH, I'd rather itbe download only, it would make it far more difficult for piracy to occur because of the format of the downloads.

Dammit I missed out

3) Not enough good content.

There's little there. Just loads of bad minis (that would be 59p on the App store...) and the blockbuster AAA titles, except not all of them. And a handful of good PS1 games.

If I only bought my games off the PSN I'd have 1/5 of my existing PSP library and therefore less moneys for Sony and its developers.

OLED sounds really good. I will be all over this if we can play PSN games on the go. I was always hoping that Microsoft would do the same XBLA but forget that. this will be my first PSP if this is true.

So it will have a screen that will eventually die?

OLED screens have a lifetime. After a few years of "average" use, they dim.

Don't know about you, but I don't think I would want to trade the advantages of OLED for it's short lifespan.

On a phone? That's one thing. You might replace that phone before it's gone. But a gaming system? Better hope they offer constant trade-in warranties.

@Drakkenfyre To be fair, your portable isn't going to be on all that much when you think about it. Most people don't do marathon sessions on them. A few years of use spread across 2-3 hour a day...could last some time.

@Drakkenfyre

Old OLED technology gave the display about 14,000 hours to half original brightness, that would be about five years @ 8 hours a day. Your typical PDP, LED, LCD are currently rated bor about 60,000 hours to half brightness. Newer OLED tech (first developed back in 07') has increased the time to half original brightness to just over 62,000 hours, even longer than that of the typical PDP, LED or LCD tv/monitors. So realistically this the PSP2 screen could greatly outlast its lifecycle. So I wouldn't worry abou the display lifetime. And really, how many of you guys plan on playing this 8 hours a day for ten years?!?!

this concept reminds me of iPhone and iPod Touch for the most part. hope it works out for them. They need to keep pumping out quality titles on this thing as well. get everyone on board and make the intro price not so steep. backwards compatibility would be nice as well, but not a necessity. mini-hd output is a must as well.

If only this was like the kindle with its 3g....not likely though...however I DO hope they have it like the kindle with the option to buy it without 3g and it be cheaper. As I NEVER see myself paying ANOTHER internet fee...kinda why I find it hard to get a smartphone.

I just bought a Samsung Epic last week w/ a 2-year contract. At the rate Sony is going with this PSP2 Phone thing-a-ma-bob, the release date will be shortly after my current contract expires.

OLED and 3G sound great for a handheld gaming console but its already got me worried about cost of entry. I'm not willing to pay $250 for a 3DS so Sony better blow me away if they think I'm paying anywhere north of the 3DS price point. If it's priced at $250 and compares favorably to the 3DS it's at least possible. If they launch this thing at $300-$400 or more they are high out of their minds. I have an iPhone 4, PSP & Ds Lite ... my portable gaming is already oversaturated.

Price it right Sony or pay the price. I don't care how cool the tech is I'm not blowing half a grand on a portable gaming system.

Aye, the rumors make it sound like Sony is either going to have to hemorrhage money per unit sold or sell it at an insanely high price:

rumored features:
OLED HD Screen
Mini-blu-ray
3G
PS360 level graphics

It's going to be very, very interesting to see if they can sell this for less than a launch model iPhone 1

Sony has to get everything right with this machine. The market is too wise and too sensitive to be introduced to a half assed product. I will not speculate on what their plans are because at this time that is all that anyone can do. I will wait patiently. I understand why they are leaving the phone solely on the PSPhone but Id rather have a device that does it all. Get your Portable ID!

It's pretty weird they are fracturing the market with two new devices. But, thats probably why the "psp phone" is called the xperia play. So that the masses of people don't get confused about which device does what. But, I agree with your general premise. It's crazy releasing a handheld in this market. Sony needs to really have this device, it's marketing and launch games planned out. They need to sell an experience and justify why I should buy it as either a companion or a replacement to my mobile phone.

I don't care about "phone" calls, just put Skype on it like the PSP Old has and I'm friggin' set. Possibly also Google Voice since that's coming up strong.

Plus with built-in 3G, and some needed improvements to Remote Play, I can access my entire computer's library of music at any time through my PS3 or use Pandora if it is available. I'll happily pay $300 for this if it lets me avoid getting gouged $50-100 for a smartphone just because I want music and a handful of apps.

Just another excuse for a big corporation to make loads of money. We've already got plenty of that with Xbox LIVE which costs to use your own Internet connection for online gaming.
