Dead Space 2 DLC 'Severed' adds two single-player chapters, brings back DSG
76
While Dead Space 2 has only been on retail shelves for about ... oh, a couple hours, that hasn't stopped EA from announcing more Dead Space 2 in the form of "an all-new digital download pack that extends the Dead Space 2 story with the addition of two standalone chapters in the single-player game." Most notably, "Dead Space 2: Severed" features the return of some nobody named Gabe Weller and ... Lexine "Dead Space Girl" Murdoch! Some of you may recall a certain blog's fondness for DSG ... we still remember seeing her for the first time (and haven't gotten her out of our heads since).
The only other details we have on Severed include a release window of "soon" for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. And yes, PC gamers, we realize that means your platform of choice isn't included and, since we wouldn't want anyone to miss out on an opportunity to be reunited with Ms. Murdoch, we've asked the publisher to clarify what's going on.
[Update: An EA rep got back to VG247 and said, simply, "Dead Space 2: Severed will not be available on the PC." So, we guess that's that?]

Just kidding.
But it's a little eerie how DSG fits in so well with The Grease pic.

yes.......and here we go AGAIN.....more chapters that should be there in the first place.....and p.c. conveniently forgotten, maybe that campaign against activision and it´s wishes of having testers that pay to work should be extended to companies that release more chapters of the same game when those things should be with the game in the first place .........

I'm really just bummed out that my favorite hobby is going to be to expensive for me to enjoy in the future. The only reason I can justify playing 25+ games a year is because I can resell them.
Right now it's only additional 2 chapters, next year it's 5, after that it's the only option...
I'm going to be forced to buying 2 or 3 games a year. Is that what the industry wants from people like me?

I see less reason lately to be an early adopter of any new game. Why not just wait for the inevitable GOTY edition that will include all the extra DLC and most probably a price reduction as well?

Because you have to wait a year or two for it?
Why buy an Xbox 360 or PS3 when 2 years from now they will be bundled with a bunch of games at half the price they are now?
This logic applies to anything in the electronics sector. If you wait a year or two, you will always get more for less, but you'll get it much later.

By 2011, about 5+ years after the introduction of console DLC, you don't think that developers are actually planning the design and development of downloadable content early on in the product's dev? By all accounts, including ours, DS2 is excellent – love it or hate it, DLC is a significant part of any AAA game developer's monetization plan. Don't like it, stop playing AAA video games.

If the content wasn't being released as DLC its not likely that you would have ever seen the content anyway, so it's hardly like you're being scammed.
Any extra work done on a project requires justification to management to get money thrown at it, and by all accounts that I've read, Dead Space 2 is a great game and doesn't feel as though its lacking in content. So in that case, why would management sign off to have this stuff in the game when its unnecessary (from a financial and quality point of view)?

Yes, we heard you. You have been repeating over and over again for the last month about how you refuse to pay to get Internet service at home, and therefore it is grossly unfair that anything should ever be distributed over the Internet.
You are an employed adult. If you wanted to get Internet service, you could. You decided not to, more power to you, now suck it up and move on.
If I decide that I don't want to receive electricity at my home, then I can stand up to the power companies and turn off my power. But I'm not going to bitch on Joystiq every single day about how it's so unfair that console makers require an AC adapter to use their products.

You don't need the internet to play the actual single player game. You only need internet if you want to purchase or download the additional content. You get the full package on the disc. Everything else is optional, additional, extra, not-required-for-full-start-to-finish material.
Seriously I will never understand this belief that additional content "should have been included". Just get over it people and be glad you can optionally extend your game after you're finished. I would have loved some extra levels in Revenge of Shinobi on Sega Genesis but that option wasn't available back then. Oh and games were still $60 in the days of Genesis and SNES so be happy they have grown massively in scope but not in price!

I understand that THIS TIME it's optional. And I will obviously not be supporting it.
What I am saying is that if we continue on this trend we're going to start seeing games that offer chunks of the retail game as DLC. How long until we start seeing 4 hour games that add-on an additional 2 or 3 hours through DLC?

It's about more than, what exactly?
Is it about companies wanting to add parts to the game, but needing to ship so as to avoid fines from publishers, while at the same time providing additional money to both the developer and the publisher?
Is it about DownLoadable Content being a viable way to sustain the interest in a game that may otherwise have become stale?
Is it about people in remote areas of the world that are incapable of accessing the internet?
OR - is it about certain people not wanting to spend the $39.99/month for internet service?

Interesting questions. I don't have internet, and I have a 9 year old computer. All of the work that I have in my portfolio was done on-site for the people contracting me. My work is creatively fulfilling, so when I come home I don't feel the need to work on any personal projects. On the occasion that I have to come into work with ideas, I do sketches.

it's about a fear of games going all digital and not being able to resell them to continue paying for my hobby. I can afford 25 games a year at $40-60 but if I can't resell them I'm only going to by 1 or 2. I don't need 1000 games that I don't care about sitting on a broken HDD 5 years from now

Obviously, the practices of the modern gaming industry aren't /for you/. I don't see a problem with paying for internet - $65 does seem a bit high, but I have no idea where you live - but you obviously do. Traveling seems to be more of a priority for you, which is great, but don't expect the rest of the world to cater to you.
Obviously, if the DLC is under 2MB or comes out within a few weeks of the games release, it's content that is or should have been on the disk. Unless the content is free when you buy the game new, and is only something like armor or weapons or maps for multiplayer, then why would it matter in the first place? You obviously aren't going to play anything online.
This seems like it's going to be like Gears of War 2's "Dark Corners" DLC. Which, didn't really add a whole lot of anything to the story. It was the same thing with Mass Effect's "Bring Down The Sky"/"Pinnacle Station" that really added nothing into the actual plot and canon of Mass Effect.

Also; obviously.
I haven't found the digital distribution method to be as frightening as a lot of people seem to see it. I've found things like iTunes, Zune Marketplace, and other various other businesses that use file serving as their chief method of distribution to be the easiest to deal with.
For example; I had a 60GB pro 360 that I was going to replace with a 250GB Kinect model. My biggest headache was going to be how to transfer all of the content that I had on my 60GB to my 250GB. It was dead simple once I remembered that the entire history of everything I've ever downloaded from XBLM/Zune can be transferred to my new 360 just by pulling up said list and downloading what I want. There's also the transfer cable if you don't have internet access.
