back on topic, it isn't hard to be "the one" in a genre where you are the ONLY one. survival horror is a dead space at the moment.

This game looks fantastic and I'm going to get it for sure, but I'm confused on the consensus on the multiplayer. it looks interesting, but to anyone who has the game, is it really even good if you've tried it? I'm just glad to have something to satisfy by newly created survival horror gaming need

The multiplayer is actually pretty good. I put about 11 hours in to it. A lot of unlockables and upgrades.
It gets pretty intense where it comes down to the last seconds of the match to win. It is all fast passed fun.

I'm hoping i'm not the only one thinking this, but it ISNT basically L4D versus mode right? I'm not a huge fan of versus and since i'm not getting Dead Space 2 for the multiplayer, I wouldn't be especially let down. I just would want to know what it really is before I get into it

I don't know what L4D is like, but Dead Space 2 multiplayer is pretty much the 4 humans attempt to complete their objectives while racing against the clock. After each objective is completed, a time extension is given and another objective is unlocked. The 4 necromorphs, along with some A.I. are tasked with pretty much killing the humans as much as possible to slow their progress. It's actually tons of fun.

It's a good game just not as scary.
Every scare is a necromorph jumping out of a wall or a necromorph playing dead.
I'm only on chapter 4 so that (hopefully) will change

Solution: Play in the dark with headphones on. And only play one or two chapters at a time so you don't get too accustomed to the scare tactics.

@Pure Black World Tendency

Yep.

this game deserves three things:
1) Play in the dark!
2) Play at the hardest level you can stand! survival horror on easy misses the point and ruins the game. if you're not hurting for ammo, it's too easy.
3) Headphones!

Follow these rules and you're guaranteed to exponentially increase your enjoyment of this game.

Fantastic game...horrible collectors edition. If your thinking about picking up this game, skip the cheap, shameful, garbage that was the CE, and just get the original retail copy. Unless you really like "happy meal" toy-like plasma cutters. Simply...not worth it.

@TheCabbage

Did yours even light up? I'll have to see if putting in a battery replacement makes this POS work as advertised.

I stuck on with this edition only b/c I inadvertently was mislead earlier on about the whole Extraction thing being included only with CE, and Amazon wasn't going to honor the $10 off a a third time if I tried cancelling the CE.

I hope the soundtrack at least makes it worth it (outside of including Extraction).

@kentuckyfried

I have no clue if mine lit up. After I took it out of the bag, and spewed cola in shock, wondering if I had purchased a Happy Meal instead of a $80 collectors edtion, I promptly folded it back up, and put it right back in the package, where it will never see the light of day again.

And to find out later, you still needed to purchase batteries....damn...I'm want to give Visceral a "necromorph-enema".

I love this game so much. I've had about only an 1.5 hour of playtime and I've had to change my pants like 5 times.

I did wait until the sun went down to play it. The headphones thing is a good idea but I don't know if the cord will reach.
DS1 scared me all 4 times I played it and I played it for long stretches of time.

@Kirkpad

They translated 4/5 into 80/100. While it is reasonable, its not truly representative of the true score IMO. 9/10 and 4/5 might as well equal the same thing because no reviewer using the 10 point system goes below a 5. If its that low its already, it's pretty bad. Metacritic always translates all scores into 100 to try to give a "fair" representation, but their system is somewhat flawed.

@Kirkpad
score value lost in translation, what does it matter ... 4/5 is a great score.

But if you must, then
1/5 stars = 0 to 20
2/5 stars = 20 to 40
...
4/5 stars = 80 to 100
Meaning somewhere between 80 and 100, in a 4/5 world that is almost perfect, take it as a "Recommended" sign by the reviewer.

PS3 got 9.0 because of Extraction, If it didn't come with it, it would've been an 8.5 too..

Dead Space 2>>Dead Space 1

Visuals (especially lighting) are WAY better. Issac is much more interesting. The backdrops are not all dark metal hallways. The multilayer turned out to be pretty good and the controls are MUCH more responsive on the PC.

Joystiq is the only site that has this right. A well-deserved 80 of out 100. I could see how someone could give it an 85, but no higher than that.

I just don't see the hype with this game; it's not stellar in any aspect. It must be the fear factor, because so many people are wanting to be spooked by this game. Frankly, once I had my plasma cutter, all potential fear went out the window. If I ran out of ammo, there was always the powerful curb stomp or haymaker. If you try to bum rush me, I got stasis. The gameplay is decent, but again not that compelling.

Good Job @ Joystiq for their rating.

Forgive me if this has already been asnwered but is it possible to jump on board with this game, story-wise? Or do I need to go back and play the first one for it to make any sense.

There is a "Previously on Dead Space" option on the main menu. It doesn't tell everything that happened in DS1, but you'll get the general idea.

Though in my opinion you should play DS1 if you want DS2 to have more meaning.

Anyone giving this game a score less than a 9 (on a 1-10 scale) should be fisted by a necromorph sans lube.
