NGP 'LiveArea' UI to support Trophies, PSN friends and messaging

LiveArea is NGP's "game-oriented communication platform," according to Sony. In other words, it's the device's (touch-controlled!) user interface -- apparently replacing the XMB -- featuring access to the PlayStation Store, Trophies, PSN friends, messaging, the browser, and other applications.

Each game will have some form of LiveArea presence, too, apparently keeping you up to date on news and even its other players (in case you bore of simply playing the game).

Additionally, LiveArea will include the "Near" feature that tracks your location over time and creates a map of where you've been. (That's not creepy at all!) Read more about it here.

yeah they need to get the XMB back in there or at least have it as an alternate option. as long as there is a D-pad there should be an XMB

i agree. XMB is a very effective UI. not too thrilled with this Android/iOS/WinMo 6.5 Start Menu thing they are trying here. if it aint broke, don't fix it.

@jtenma As much as I like the XMB, it's not an ideal touch interface. Having the top-level menus accessible at a single touch is far more efficient than scrolling left/right, and the same goes for the further options and scrolling up/down.

I think I need to step outside for a bit, This is all too much.

Apparently the title is all we need.

@Hoops It will probably appear in another menu like the other games, and you can customize what appears on the main screeen

Yeah, you may not believe this but not everyone seems to have unlimited funds so we must chose what best fits us. I know you have 10 cars parked outside your 4 homes but even for the rich like yourself the concept of living within ones means or being a reasonable consumer shouldn't be to hard to get.

That nonsense aside, while I have a 3DS on pre-order, I am much more excited about this. So much amazing packed into one handheld.

Sorry anything with an uncharted logo on it can't be considered ugly.

It reminds me a lot of the Android OS, and that's okay with me.

It actually reminds me a lot of the iOS. Sure it is using circles instead of squares and it looks like you scroll up and down instead of side to side but overall I think they pulled heavily from the iPhone on the entire design process.

THAT is a revolutionary interface? It's like the iPhone with balls instead of rounded squares. I'm not saying it's not functional, just don't try to pass it off as revolutionary.

They didnt announce a price but Im pretty sure its going to be expensive as hell.

Trophies make me happy, but it sadly seem the NGP wont be able to play old UMD games. Oh well you can get everything :P

Its funny how the spanner is calling everyone else a tool because they are excited for something. Wouldn't hurt to join in instead of being the one to cause misery and sadness like a plague.

It looks like they grabbed iOS and spun it on it's side.

I never liked the Playstation XMB, until I played on a PSP and bought my PS3. Now I wouldn't have it any other way. It's so very organised.

It's what I want too, but don't get too excited just yet. PSN Store doesn't necessarily mean PSN games, could be just PSP and mini's. Trophies could also just be a list of the trophies you have on PS3 (which would be stupid). Hopefully Sony will get more specific soon.

Damn, the NGP is sexy in every way, but that UI... Isn't. The XMB was nice. This isn't. Hopefully it's not final...

Ehh, maybe I'm just hating because the Windows Phone 7 UI is so gorgeous and my standards have been ruined because of it.
