You're spreading yourself too thin Sony! That said, release all the turn based RPGs you can on this thing, that's the only type of game that will work with touch screen buttons IMO.

Ok, this "Android has no games" is now invalid.

I guess they really wanted to compete against XBL for Windows Phone 7 and iOS

@commenter7 LOL. X10 suck on 2.1. Other phones are not receiving updates. Inconsistent OpenGL support result in many existing games not working when you buy them from the Market. This will work on a tiny fraction of Android devices, just like NetFlix.

Over 50% of Android phones are running 2.2. Things are getting better with Android, especially on the tablet side of things where Tegra 2 is pretty much the standard (same way Snapdragon is with Windows Phone 7). On the phone side of things, I'm not sure what Google's plans are with Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich, but I know that their development tools have gotten a lot better.

@kurian2z5 I won't be able to run it, but not because I'm not running 2.2
My htc magic will probably be too slow to run any of those games. Going to pick up one of those dual-core ones when they come out.

I wonder if the day this uploads it'll be removed from the 'Droid market. As, this IS an market that's competing with the Droid.

I bet it will since that Kongregate App was removed for that same reason.

@The Aquacharger It won't be necessarily competing with the Android market, per se. It'll be like the Tegra Zone app that all Tegra 2 android phones will have.

@Dirge

Didn't know about the Tegra thing (I know nothing of cellphones as I've never had one) but under their rules I don't see how this could be allowed and then the Kongregate App wasn't and all that did was download free flash games to your SD card. This allows you to buy full games from the PSN.
and it's going tobe for all Android phones.

From what has been shown so far this will only be available on specific phones. Which means it most likely will either ship with the phone and not be on the market or the market will only show you it if you search for it on one of those phones.

Most service providers have their own apps on the phone that have a similar function to the android market, for retailing their own shit so they can make more money from you.

The difference between that and what kongregate did, is that kongregate is a third-party which released an app on the market available to all phones (albeit those which have 2.2, but you could download it on any phone if you were able to put 2.2 on it via say a custom rom) , thus it comes closer to being a 'competing market place'.

My question: Is your account universal? I don't want to have to buy the same game on the store for my phone.. then my new phone again, then again on the PSP2, then again on the PS3/4... Please make it work like Steam.

It's really not that far of a jump from engadget to come here since they are sibling sites. The raving mad Glenn Beckish lunatics on joystiq pale in comparison to the smart phone fanboys.

Games, politics and phones, now all we need to do is invite religion to the discussion and we will have the 4th horsemen so we can start the apocalypse.

it probably won't be distributed through the Marketplace. there's no rule on having a completely separate app store.

Wonder if the PlayStation Store will work with the HTC Evo...can't wait to see more details. Hopefully we won't have to wait all the way until Holiday 2011 for the PS Store on smartphones (but probably will I surmise...).

I doubt that the Play will have any exclusive software. I think it's just optimized for playing your PSOne games.

They said 'download', not 'download from Android market'. They likely aren't using that method of delivery. Amazon has a market, too, and you can install anything onto an Android that you like just by downloading it through the built-in browser.

Games will be slower than those written directly for Android devices...

Kaz said "hardware-agnostic game framework", which means an additional software layer between the game code and the graphics hardware. Every function call the game makes to the graphics hardware will take longer because every function call has to go through Sony's additional software layer.

It reminds me of Microsoft pushing .NET on the 360. It's great for simple Arcade and Indie games, but big titles that push the limits of the hardware avoid it like the plague.

The Android integration is genius on Sony's part. It gives them the ability to fully complete in the smartphone gaming segment without having to support and market a specific piece of hardware. Yes, yes, the PS Phone will be announced, but the success of phone gaming via Sony does not rest on its sales figures.
Also, just opening up that catalogue puts Sony front and center in the phone market.
Great dual-approach Sony! First time in a while I am excited about the long-term strat plan!
