@Ezio Auditore da Firenze
Sorry to cut in front of the line but someone in the bottom of the list said that it bricks when the update is done (if you have it jailbroken).

That is false!
Someone i know jailbroke it with hotz installer. After returning it to factory default settings (saving his games on an external hdd) ,i still saw the installer option after all that but the ps3 wrote 3.55 - the j wasn't present. After copying back all his ps3 saves and ps1 games (actually bought some games), he updated and everything was ok.
He did not install any ps1 or ps3 games or any kind of backup managers.

My friend has learned his lesson... i think... i know i have XD

Maybe the PS4 functionality is what is taking it so long to download. Must be hard to update the hardware over the internet. Well done on Sony's part on finding a way to do this. Sony 4 life!!!!11!!!11!!!!!1111!!!!!!!!!!

How bout this, don't remove existing functionality with a mandatory update and be a di*k to your customers. By removing the ability to run linux on it after initially offering it Sony was asking people to hack the consoles.

@JaymzShady

The loss of USB updates is a disappointment (assuming you mean the firmware updates from a USB storage device). The last time I did a firmware update via a download from PSN, it took almost an hour, and that was probably 2-3 weeks after the update was released. Ever since then, I download via PC and update manually.

I understand how it's used for the hacked stuff to load custom firmwares, but seriously, that's a pretty lame move by Sony, even though I see why they probably felt they had no choice. Still, those of us using it fairly get screwed.

Then I would say congratulations for being in the minority because of all the people who hacked/modded their PSP and 360, none of them pay for games.

@ToTheMoon
I used my PS3 to use it as a media center, until they removed OtherOS. So I hacked it to get the media center functionality back. I don't care about pirating games because I many use my ps3 for bluray and only have 3 games. I will play my games on pc. Many people tell me to 'just buy a media center'. Well, no $300 media center is going to also play bluray, regardless of what else it can or can't do.

I know a lot of people are peeved about games being hacked, and I agree that it sucks. But this precedent of taking away something from a product after it is purchased is a slippery slope and if it goes unchallenged, who knows where it might eventually end up. Can you imagine owning hardware like a console as a service? Oh you didn't pay your PS3 bill? Bricked.

@Arcangel000 No need to get pissed off dude. I understand Sony has to keep these security patches coming so its stock share holders see they are doing something about the problem. Although it just has no incentives for us the loyal gamers. Yeah, PSN is free but they should throw us a freaking bone. Some MKV support, or any of the countless things the customers are asking for on their forums. Sorry that I came off as a dick, but you called a select few of us drama queens but in reality a few of us are tired of this cat and mouse bullshit. For fucks sake, I cannot use my Turtle Beach headset with my PS3 no more because they blocked the USB support :(

@Arcangel000 Yeah I know it was a lame attempt at a funny, but you called a select few of us "drama queens". In reality, we are just fed up with Sony for forcing these seemingly useless updates that bring nothing new to the table. I understand we pay nothing for PSN (unless you are a +member) but they should at the least throw us a bone and add MKV support or some features mentioned on the PS message boards. I've lost support for my Turtle Beach headsets because of the USB block. This ridiculous cat and mouse game is just hurting us the customers. But hey its the share holders that should be happy, not the customers right?

@pibs I never tried to justify the update, all I said was it did not take long. So if I offended anyone, my bad? but claiming something takes forever just because you dont think its necessary is kind of silly. Just say " this sh*t is unnecessary" and state your opinion, dont just make excuses about how many precious minutes of your life it takes away. I dont know to each his own.

@Muskie First, if you have a flaky connection, they probably aren't playing online, and if they have no connection, why would they even care, they get their updates from game disc anyway.

People needs to stop whining for something that takes 5 minutes, it's not like you'll die because of an update. People are dramatic for no freaking reason these days.

I just found out about this when I turned on my PS3 after school. With an increase of .01 to the version number, I wasn't even surprised when I found out it was just a "security patch". Oh yes, hackers, you better watch out. Sony's gonna get you. Not...

Why would this update brick hacked ps3's - they'd only brick a handful before people got wise to it?
Surely Sony would be better to convert them back to legitimate firmware and keep a note of the console's ID so it can study its behaviour and/or brick it at a later date.

@NormanCod bricking a handful of people would definitely send a message to people who are hacking. And noone is really sure if Sony made it to brick hackers or if it is just an unfortunate result to updating from a custom firmware.
