That is some awesome artwork this week!

Also, I'm going to hope that the DS2 Collector's Edition gets a crazy discount in a few months like they usually do (remember seeing Fallout 3 lunchboxes for like $30 at Best Buy a few months after it was released).

@Courtney I've read some really bad things about the DS2 CE. The plasma cutter is really small and the "bookends" are cheap.

Yeah most collector's editions are a joke.
They charge you another $20-$50, give you a bunch of junk you could go out and buy separately for $5.

I thought the copy of Extraction for PS3 was only included with the CE? Is it also in the normal edition?

My logic is to wait for an Amazon Gold box or something where I can get the CE for the same price as the regular and get Extraction for free instead of buying it on the PSN.

@Courtney Nope, Extraction is available with all PS3 copies while the game is in its "first run." After the first run of discs it'll be a $15 download on PSN. You might as well buy it now. Unfortunately this has been a very confusing question for a lot of people.

Obviously, you guys weren't paying attention to the NGP news. It is EASY to develop games on the NGP. You guys just talked about how developers said they ported PS3 games to the NGP with ease. Then you guys went "LOL HARD TO DEVELOP, COST MORE TO DEVELOP". It uses a fricking ARM CPU.

@Neo Amon Indeed. It's ironic given how the PS3 is so hard to develop for, that it's almost like a copy and paste job for the NGP. The graphics may not be 1:1, but it looks like devs will be able to port any PS3 game to the thing if they want.

Why would anyone spend time developing a PS3 looking game just to port it exclusively to NGP?

On the other hand: Why would anyone buy an NGP if it consists of nothing but console ports?

You might be able to play your console games on the go, sure. To do that however, you would have to buy two expensive hardware components and two versions of the same game at $50-60.

Basically, what I am getting at is that exclusive NGP games would be expensive, and porting games might not be worth the cost cause people would most likely buy the console version anyways.

It's easy to develop for the NGP. It doesn't even have to be a port of a PS3 game. There, easier to understand? Or you can use your brain and think, "if it's easy to port PS3 games to NGP then it's most likely be easy to develop games on the NGP". Look at the damn hardware. ARM CPU and PowerVR which are both used in the iphone and many other smartphones.

I have no idea what you are trying to say in your comment.

Would it be easy to develop iphone games on NGP? Probably.

Would it be easy to develop the type of games they were showcasing at the conference on NGP? I doubt it.

My point is that to develop high production games EXCLUSIVELY on NGP would probably be expensive and arduous. Also, even if a PS3 game could be ported to NGP most people wouldn't care cause they could buy/already own a PS3 and just play on that. It would be about the same price, if not less expensive. There's no way NGP won't cost about the same as a PS3.

Uhh, so sure – it's "easy" just like developing Metal Gear Solid or Uncharted was "easy."

Oh, those were two of the most expensive video games ever produced. But sure, easy.

FUUUUUUU. I almost got the name of the podcast right with my recording of the live show (hope you guys didn't mind?). Guys who downloaded it will of course now I called it the PSP2 edition =P.

I'll listen to this as I missed the start, and to see if how different it is to the final product (probably not very).

Also when you guys did requests during the live podcast (someone said bring back brush with frame), I was thinking, with Dead Space 2 out and all, can you guys bring back let's get Visceral, Visceral, I wanna get Visceral, VISCERAAAAAAAAAAAAL, VISCERAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!

The PSP2 is honestly the perfect device for a person like me...

For one... I'm a huge technology geek (which is why I'm a playstation fanboy). I LOVE cinematic games (far more than "mobile" games). I'm a little big of a graphics whore. I take transit so there's a PERFECT opportunity for me to use it for a couple hours a day. And the size wont matter to me (mostly because I have a backpack :D).

The PSP2 definitely seems like a niche product to me (especially considering how the price will most likely be pretty high), but that's the exact type of product that appeals to me most.

ridiculous criticisms of the NGP. " wouldn't make me look cool" ?

the genius thing about NGP is its ability to play games that are developed for Consoles, PC and iOS. Sony will of course create some awesome exclusives for it based on their current IPs. But the apparent ease of porting will mean that developers can inexpensively port high profile big budget console titles to the platform.

Whatever you wanna say, their IS a large market for that. People want to be able to have console experiences on a handheld.

On top of this the tech they put into it is not just thrown in for good measure. Sony is very clearly looking towards location aware gaming/apps and what they call "converging real and virtual" which to me is obviously talking about augmented reality gaming.

this was shown in their trailer of games, i think it was titled real fighters? With the combination of camera, gyroscope, accelerometers, gps, digital compass and processing power I think we'll see a lot of unique and compelling AR games.

Sony will certainly leverage their PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 libraries on this handheld and this is why this system will be massive.

If they can tie the NGP and PS3 together by allowing them to game against each other, connect, interact and compliment each other. Then I think its possible that one will help the other and PS3 owners will want to own a NGP and vice versa.

anyways just some thoughts, but I really think that the criticisms in this podcast of the NGP were unfounded, and frankly a bit facetious. This is only the second time Ive listened to the podcast as I was put off last time as well. I wont bother listening again. Poor, ill-informed, biased and opinionated.

It doesn't make any sense to me -- why spend so much time lauding Dead Space for iOS and then so easily dismiss Uncharted for the NGP?

I understand that Uncharted is probably more suited to the PS3, but there's no question that Dead Space is also best on a home console or PC. It seems to me that the success of Dead Space iOS would indicate some demand for a home-console-type experience on a portable. Price aside, I don't see how an NGP-exclusive Uncharted would fail to generate similar interest, unless the majority of gamers are too ashamed of their hobby to be seen playing games in public, of course.

Fair enough, I guess. The price point is not particularly compelling to me: I think the emphasis on low price point is actually a really unfortunate trend. There are many thirty-dollar DS games which offer a more valuable experience to me than probably any thirty dollars' worth of iOS games. I think at least some of the pushback against iOS gaming is from people who feel similarly, and would lament losing the games that would simply never be developed if the mobile/handheld market can support only the rare game priced over $5. Maybe it'll change, though.

I agree re: the lack of games on the App Store *worth* $30 – that's why I said things like PlayStation Suite and Xbox Live games on Win Phone 7 are a really great strategy. You still have the $1 "mobile" games but you also have the option of higher-profile games that could take the risk of developing a 30 hour RPG and selling it for $30, or $20, or whatever. On Xbox Live on consoles, you can snag the 10-15 hour Shadow Complex for $15, so that model/pricing already works in digital formats.

I think the iOS App Store has been hugely disruptive in terms of forcing consumers to reevaluate what they're comfortable spending on portable games, and what they really want back. Now, it's up to the platform holders and the developers to create or alter the existing marketplace(s) so that more expensive games (both in terms of cost AND development) have a chance of surviving in a sea of low-cost alternatives.

Rants are amazing but I have a simple question. What is the game Justin referred to near the end of the podcast? It sounded like "*Something* Gear" for iPhone (And Chris pointed out it is available for Android as well).
