Latest PS3 firmware update brings the bans for Black Ops hacks
63
Dirty, dirty Black Ops cheaters that downloaded the new PS3 firmware, update 3.56, are finding out exactly what Sony meant when it said the patch would help bolster "security." A grip of consoles have been permanently banned from Black Ops multiplayer servers for hacking or cheating after their users installed the new firmware -- though some of the outspoken among the banned are contesting the presumption that they are cheaters on the game's official forums. (Which is like, the first thing you'd do if you were a dirty, dirty cheater.)
In a seemingly cooperative attack executed by two mortal enemies, firmware 3.56 joins last week's mandatory Xbox Live update, which also stopped pirated and modded copies of Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 in their tracks. Is Activision's cash cow so powerful that the publisher can request its own console updates at will? If that's the case, Activision: Would you please, please ask Sony to add cross-game chat?
Oh, and see if Microsoft will bring black the blades. We miss the blades.

I wonder why people will move on to complaining about once Sony actually launches cross-game chat. Hmm.

i'm guessing he ment to say "what will people complain about once sony does deliver cross game chat"
i still find it hilarious that people want that feature, not because its useless or whatever, but because they make it sound like its the greatest thing to have... like EVER. I rather have dozens of other features (like Last.fm) then a glorified one way phone call to a buddy.

Other OS. Custom soundtracks for all games. Better file management. PS2 emulation. Auto-Syncing trophies. MKV support. The ability to choose which PS3s are activated.

@PR0F3TA i know of few people who dont use cross game chat oon a near constant basis. its fun playing an rpg or something and chatting people up. or listening to people get mad during an fps when you are raising pinatas that are alive.
last.fm doesnt even work unless you have the app running. it would be much better if it could run in the background. very non-impressive as is. i could do without.

Ability to choose which PS3 are activated? What do you mean by that? You can activate and deactivate PS3s as desired already. The main flaw currently is that if your system breaks (or stolen I suppose) there's no way to deactivate the system without going through Sony for help. Is that what you're referring to?

You realize that it's a "phone call" that works no matter what you are doing on either of your consoles, a "phone call" that isn't one way, but eight ways.
I'm not saying it's needed constantly - especially on a console that is tailored around single player experiences (such as the PS3). I for one cannot play single-player games (such as what I am playing now - FF13) in a party.
It is mighty useful for getting everyone in a MP, spreading news or just chilling out.

It will be a PS+ feature, but Sony said it was "coming." So far, no dice.

no it was rumored...and it would have been stupid to only limit it to Plus owners. Out of the 30 or 40 friends I have on PSN, only 2 have Plus.

I stopped caring about being downvoted. People with stupid comments get upvoted all the time, a lot of people with intelligent comments get brushed off.

This is just great I'm happy to know it's possible. I also hope its at a console level and not just PSN ID. Let those who want to "run linux", stay off the PSN.
Seriously you bought a PS3 to play SNES and GBA games? Poor poor excuse. BAN THE WHOLE LOT!

This firmware update was one of the slowest yet. I am a PS3 apologist who usually says "its not that bad" but I got LBP2 in the mail and was dying to play it and was staring at the firmware download screen for a loong time!
Oh and I'm a plus subscriber, it'd be nice if it could download these anytime and not just the weekly time slot I assign!

(It's not directly related to this story but it's relavent.)
Microsoft shouldn't be able to get away with this. They've proven that they're capable of adding extra security on games via dashboard updates, and yet they've only applied it to a small selection of games. What about the many other games that they're allowing people to pirate.

Though, in the post, their should be a correction. The update that Microsoft made for the Xbox 360 last week, that stopped COD Black ops from loading on copied disc, has already been circumvented. But that's besides the point.

I don't really play my ps3 online. Does this update do anything to make it worth the five minutes it'll take to get it? Or is it pure anti-cheater?
Posted: Jan 28th 2011 12:59PM mywhitenoise said
@Dalrint anti-cheater. They haven't done anything of importance since September....and that was only a 3D update.
