Dead Space 2 outselling first game '2-to-1,' EA says
67
Despite an overwhelmingly positive critical reception, the first Dead Space was a launch dud when it hit retail in mid-October of 2008. Reporting on its life-to-date sales through that November, Gamasutra described it, along with fellow EA newcomer Mirror's Edge, as having "failed miserably" -- NPD data showed that Dead Space was below 500K unit sales more than a month after launch. The following February, EA would quietly confirm that the game had become a million-seller by the end of 2008.
Fast-forward two Februaries later and EA is bringing back up that bleak launch, but this time in new light: "Dead Space 2 launched last week [...] outscoring the original Dead Space and outselling it two-to-one," the publisher trumpeted in its latest list of business highlights (without revealing specific figures). Putting the Dead Space 2 commercial launch in such stark terms sounds impressive, but in reality it's more like "a pretty good start" for a deserving sequel.
So, EA, when are you gonna give Mirror's Edge its second chance?

i'm curious, have you played CoD2 on Veteran? that might be the hardest game i've played. i've haven't played Dead Space though and was looking for something to compare it with.
i'll get around to playing Dead Space as soon as i make some good progress on my nearly-insurmountable backlog.

Well deserved. I hope they take a second chance on Mirror's Edge.

Mirror's Edge could have been just as successful as Assassin's Creed, probably more so, both came out at the same time and both were equally disappointing while showing great potential and a strong demand for a sequel. AC has since been printing money.
Ignoring Mirror's Edge is the stupidest thing Ive seen a company do in a long time.

Finished it on Zealot (first playthrough) over the weekend. It definitely has more startles, but it isn't as scary or refreshing as the first one.
It's a great game, but the entire time I kept thinking "Was this really deserving of a sequel? It's not much different than the first."

I agree. Although the sequel is definitely a good game, the first one was infinitely better to me.. The story felt deeper, I had a better understanding of what I had to do and why. And I miss the map! The best part was always being able to zoom all the way out and check out where you are in comparison to the rest of the ship. I know the Sprawl is supposed to be way bigger then the Ish, but I really don't feel it.. It's just one section after the next.
Plus now what the hell am I supposed to look at while in an elevator...? Damn it miss the map!

i agree with both of you. plus, i still feel like giving isaac a voice all of a sudden was just a bad move. i don't understand what the developers were thinking, more so now after having heard him drop all those stupid, unnecessary f bombs and shitty shits! his dialogue was terribly written, and not very well voiced at all. it kind of just killed the mood for me.

Oh man I really want a Mirror's Edge 2 as well. I loved the heck out of that game. Yeah it was short, but it was still incredibly fun. So fun to me that I played it twice. Once on normal, the second on Hard while not ever picking up a weapon. It had a neat idea towards game-play and the story wasn't at all that bad. Honestly I think it didn't do so well despite EA advertising the heck out of it because some people were upset when you could use a gun (which isn't necessary AT ALL) it wasn't the best thing in the world. Get over it. If you understood in the first place that the main mechanics was to RUN followed by your choice of nut-kicking, pimp slapping and every now and then disarming... I think it played right *deep sigh* My only complaint ever for it was those really long jumps where even if you got the right momentum you still 50/50 landed deathly close to the edge or didn't quite make it and fell to your death.
Onto Dead Space 2 which was the main topic. I might pick this up though I'm not sure I'll enjoy it as much as the first. Played a little of a friends copy and it felt predictable. I knew when I was going to run into a necromorph and I knew if I saw one laying on the floor that it wasn't dead (NEVER DEAD GUYS). I just didn't feel any of those lovely scares.

Well deserved for this quality game. I finished the game but haven't given the multiplayer a go yet. Is there a co-op survival/horde mode?

Yeah I concur with all that. I think the Dead Space franchise is solid & vast enough to be an ongoing single player experience (maybe co-op but that'll def reduce the scare factor considerably) but multiplayer is definitely not needed in this IP. Damn the masses! Please the fans! I refuse to believe the double sales is due to tacked on multiplayer!

Thank god. At least this franchise is saved. I was skeptical of DS2 since many of the original creators left for Sledgehammer Games. That and the bigger focus on action and tacked on multiplayer. But everyone seems extremely positive, so I'll probably buy it soon.

I think so far my favorite part of this franchise is that the story crosses so many platforms. Graphic Novel starts then animated movie picks up from there, then dead space 1, then the anime Aftermath, then another graphic novel, then the iOS title, then the Ignition motion comic/mini games, then dead space 2. Oh and they released an actual novel taking place a hundred years before any of it!
Did I miss anything?

BRING ON MIRROR'S EDGE 2!
First one was a under-rated game IMO. Was an amazing game and it does deserve a sequel with a lot to improve on.
Can possibly even support the Kinect.

What I don't understand is, WTF isn't everyone buying these games? Gamers are always complaining like lil' bitches about how, "there's no innovation." and, "there are too many cookie cutter games." Yet somehow seem to justify spending over a BILLION dollars every year on yet another Call of Duty title, or on another Halo title, meanwhile leaving some of the best, innovative, fresh, original and polished games this gen (Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Alan Wake, Enslaved, etc.) sitting on store shelves as if those games would give you cooties or something for buying them.
As awesome as Dead Space was, and as so much better as Dead Space 2 is, there is no reason EA should be reporting anything other than Dead Space 2 is selling four or five times faster than Dead Space - seriously, we should be looking at Red Dead Redemption numbers here; Dead Space 2 is just that deserving.
What's wrong with people? Do we seriously have to slap the name Call of Duty to the front of every worthy game just to get it to sell in numbers deserving of the game?
Call of Duty: Attack of the Necromorphs
Call of Duty: Return of the Necromorphs
Call of Duty: Siege of the Gleaming Police State
Call of Duty: Escape Bright Falls
Call of Duty: Far Future Post - Post Apocalyptic Warfare
Seriously, what the hell are we turning into? Looking at games like this selling down the crapper, just makes me sad to be a gamer. Publishers cannot continue to put $20 million to $50 million a pop into quality titles like this if people do not step up to the plate and buy them. At the rate it's going, the only games that are going to be left in the future are Halo, Call of Duty and a boat load of cheap and shitty iPhone games, who's only commonality with current console games, will be the names of familiar (and defunct) IPs slapped on the splash screen.

@Tachyonic Cargo It's just like movies where there's not much innovation and sequels rule the roost. I have to say I'm getting tired of EA's complaining though. Just because a game doesn't sell a million within a month doesn't mean it's a failure. Cheapskates like me still resist the $60 price point and wait for the price to come down a while before buying.
