GOG asks: Want Return to Zork? 'Course you do!

"Want some rye? 'Course you do!"

That's literally the only thing I remember from Return to Zork, Infocom's FMV-filled 1993 graphical adventure game. I think I might have enjoyed playing it, though, so I'm happy to see that it's now available on GOG.

For just $5.99, you too can enter a world of people offering you rye, and solve the dual mysteries of who offered you rye, and whether or not your character wanted some. Also, there's something about the Great Underground Empire of Zork being found "beneath the Valley of the Sparrows."

I was stuck in this game for years and this was before Al Gore invented the internet so there wasn't much I could do- no walkthroughs to be found online. Memories....

Yes! Me too! I died repeatedly in that damned forest where your vision blacks out. Ha ha.

Good thing that guy has a lamp, he would likely be eaten by a Grue.

This was the first CD ROM game I ever owned, but it took forever to get it working properly.

Wow I was just thinking we needed more Rye-based adventuring.

Didn't you have to pour the rye into the plant, and then he would drink so much that he passed out? I never was able to finish the game.

I love that you can ruin your chances of finishing the game in first ten minutes (stab guy) but they don't tell you & let you keep playing a long as you want. Same with the original Zork (light candle).

A lot of early adventure games were like that. Even in Maniac Mansion, you could sabotage your chances of winning by mailing the wrong cassette tape to the publisher, or missing out on getting the stamps.

AFAIK, Day of the Tentacle is impossible to lose.

This game was awesome. It had a cameo by Wonder Years regular Jason Hervey as the Troll King, and whether that makes the game worse or better is another matter.

Although....Beyond Zork was probably my favorite Zork game.

Zork with FMV is just wrong. I was even mad when Zork Zero had pictures, but since the game was written by Meretzky, I let it go. Real Zork should be text only, the way God intended. *end of old guy grumbling*

I still have the original. Holy cow that game was frustrating...
I need to grab a walkthrough and just go through it for old times sake.

Neither does Grand Inquisitor. I miss these games.

Wow, that is exactly the only thing I remember from this game, too. And I remember it really, really well. But only that one thing. Pretty amazing. That line was of equal quotability as stuff from Monty Python.

I still have the original. Back then I would have killed to have a walkthrough reachable by 2 clicks of a mouse.
