EA suffered a net loss of $322 million for its fiscal third quarter ending December 31, 2010, a fourfold increase from the same period last year. The company generated revenues of a mere $1.05 billion during Q3, a decrease of nearly $200 million from the holidays last year. Despite significant increases in digital revenue and "record breaking" iOS sales, there wasn't enough to offset the reduction in packaged goods (disc-based games) sales, titles with "significant" development costs and the general cost of goods sold for EA's business.
The company also noted that it ended the quarter with 7,742 employees, down from 8,537 a year ago and the 7,820 workers it employed during Q2 before committing its "seasonal roll-offs." EA CFO Eric Brown mentioned that 22 percent of the publisher's employees are now in "low cost locations." We've followed up with EA for its definition of "low cost locations."

EA seems poorly managed. Ripe for the picking.

i'm sure a lot had to do with sub-par sales of Medal of Honor. i'm sure they dumped a lot of capital into that game to not see any significant return.

if they weren't poorly managed we would be complaining that they are releasing too many madden and burnout games and not enough new IPs.
they're a great company making great games but the masses didn't care about mirror's edge and dead space and army of two

I think the point of the article is that they need to, you know, actually make some money. At least that's how I read it.

@Toradora Non-QAAP revenue Q3 over Q3 has seen a significant positive increase. EA's stock prices were up 10% after this quarterly report. Joystiq did a bad job with an attention grabbing headline that doesn't actually give you any insightful information about this report. Sorry to burst your bubble haters, EA had a solid Q3 this year.

I feel bad for EA. Unlike Activision, who dumps yearly iterations of franchise games to meet its bloated earnings goals, EA has taken chances to come up with new IPs that bring long run growth. We wouldn't have Dead Space, Skate, or Mirror's Edge if it wasn't for their ambition.

right but they are not earning money. Activision has put them selves in a position to start making some new titles now that they have CoD money and guitar hero money rolling in.
If you remember a few years back EA was the big publisher releasing yearly versions and then they made army of two, mirror's edge, dead space, and no one bought them

I think EA's constant cash grabbing via ridiculous amounts of overpriced DLC, unbalancing of online games with things like Ultimate Team and EASHL player boosts, etc. is alienating their core customers such as myself. This year will be the first time I don't buy an NHL series game since I first started buying the series back in '94. And the racing half of NFS HP could have used several more events, I noticed they put more events in a DLC pack but I'm not paying for things that should have been there in the first place.

Wasn't it someone from EA who said single player gaming is finished and that it's all about online multiplayer gaming. Yeah, is that idiot gone?
Yes, many people play Call of Duty, but that is not the reason to concentrate all your money into multiplayer games. You make a crappy single player game ... you deserve what you get.
I want games with story and suspense. Multiplayer shooting is okay, but it's limited to maps, weapons, powerups. I've had my fill a long time ago with Unreal Tournament.
Put out more games like Dead Space and you'll do alright. Follow what Rockstar does and you'll be alright.

EA in my opinion is somewhat unwieldy... they've grown to a massive size, acquire other companies who have some great IP and shut them down after a game underperforms (Origin), and mine properties that do sell for all their worth (Madden, etc). You would think that it would catch up to them someday.
Their bright spot is the unknown title coming from the former heads of Infinity Ward.
I also like their offerings for iPhone/iPad, which I think will give dedicated game handhelds a run for their money.
Interestingly enough, we haven't seem much from them on the Kinect/Move front, but perhaps that'll change...
I really wish they would revive the Wing Commander franchise (and NOT the way they did on XBL which had nothing to do with the original)
And I think Battlefield 1943 on XBL should have taught them something. They should explore those type of games more...

Correlation does not imply causation. The real reason is probably that I can't remember a single amazing EA game I played last year.

Not sure if this is allowed but before getting all boo-hoo for EA, read the article at http://www.gamespot.com/news/6297329.html. They quote the adjusted values and EA stock has gone UP since their earnings report.

stock prices around earning calls reflect more on whether earnings predictions were or were not met, or exceeded. It really has no bearing on how well the company itself actually did in the short term.
You see similar things happen w/ layoff announcements because they're dropping costs (as long as you can make people think it's for a legitimate cause).

Low cost locations simply means "not on the coasts". The cost of doing business in a place like CA or FL is anywhere from 50-150% higher than somewhere like say St. Louis or Minneapolis.
