Electronic Arts and BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic has already established itself as the "largest ever development project" at the company, but Chief Financial Officer Eric Brown said that a moderate subscriber base could turn the "significant development costs" into profits -- "on a dime." During an investor call yesterday, the CFO stated that with a half a million subscribers, the game would be "substantially profitable, but not the kind of thing [EA] would write home about." The target for the publisher appears to be something with more than six zeros in it, as Brown said, "Anything north of a million subscribers it's a very profitable business."
Adding color to his remarks, the executive claimed, "There's been a fair amount of talk on various blogs describing spend that are vastly higher than anything we've ever put in place. Don't read 'gamer blogs' as having any substance. Some of them bring a chuckle, but they also bring a frustration to those who are being responsible for managing EA [research and development] dollars when they read falsehoods out in the press."
Brown reiterated that Star Wars: The Old Republic is expected after the fiscal year ends in March, but before the end of calendar 2011. He said the game is currently being focus tested, "not at the beta scale of testing," and has "only gotten stronger."

They make it sound as if 500k players will be easy to get. Maybe im wrong and everyone is eager as **** to play this, but that's a fairly sizeable number. I know its not as mainstream as star wars, but eve online for example has something like 300-400k players after all these years. just a comparison....

Well, if there's anyone who knows how to make a good Star Wars game, it's BioWare. I don't think it will be a problem.

They don't need to retain them to make an immediate profit. They just need that initial surge, which they'll get, and the dev costs are paid off. Then as long as they have enough retained subscribers they'll continue to make a profit while it's operating.

Eve is published by a very small company, not EA. It's targeted at a VERY niche player type, and has no major franchise to bank on OR the pedigree of bioware behind it's development, there are all MAJOR factors in getting people to sign up and stay on board. This has all the pedigree and marketing dollars behind it and is targeted at the WoW type player, and on top of that it's star wars... they could probably sell a couple million boba fet toothpicks at $60 a copy... I would be shocked if they couldn't hold 500k.
This is the first mmo since LOTR to actually have a chance to compete (not beat, but maybe play in the same park as) WoW. And it has a better chance than LOTR with bioware and EA on board...
If they can maintain the game with player numbers fractional of wow's it gives them room to grow in the future and maybe even be top dog some day...
All 100% speculation of course since we can't play it yet, but by the numbers it's god a damn good shot IMO. Fingers crossed it doesn't a) suck and b) wear out it's welcome with my game time.

Bring it to the consoles w/ the ability to play w/ PC gamers just like valve is going to do w/ portal 2 or do what was done for FF11. your bound to make a ton of money from the console community, just a thought.

And bound to lose a ton of the PC community because it'd have to be even further dumbed down for the extremely limited nature of console hardware/software. Oh, and then in a few years when the next generation of consoles is out, you'd have to remake it for that or lose players. Hmmm, drive off PC consumers for a very limited console window? Bad idea. MMOs aren't for consoles.

How would you have to dumb it down?
Appart from the glaring fact that both PS3 and 360 have keyboard support which removes any pretence about "ya can't comunimicates".
You can also easily map a substantial amount of buttons to actions on a controller is you make use of mutators such as the trigger buttons to provide access to several sets of mapped actions to buttons.

APART from the glaring fact that %99 of people have their console in a living room, playing on a couch. So, how does that work? Keyboard in lap and hold the two handed controller and somehow use both? Keyboard and mouse AND comfort on a couch/bed? %99 of console owners also don't have-and don't expect to need-a keyboard and mouse for their console games because it's a console. Congrats! You've just sprung a product on people that requires even more additional purchases and cannot be played comfortably! I'm sure gamers will love it. Combine that with the inability to run any mods on the console version and I'm sure you have a hit on your hands.

Because MMOs are all about using mods.
As for using a keyboard with a controller being hard, who said they have to be used at the same time?

Business: If we had more subscribers for our MMO we'd make money.

Well, that is surprising indeed. Then those rumours of three-digit million costs in development probably are not quite true.
Even LOTRO could hold that figure for quite some time, and got to a base of 300K subscriptions during the last years of its not-freemium time. I imagine with this license and that studio behind TOR, it should very well be possible to hold this amount of players.

500K doesn't really sound that hard to get for something like that. It's based around a popular sci fi lore and a popular RPG franchise. As long as it doesn't let down most of the players I think maintaining over 500K shouldn't be too tough for Bioware.

They haven't even announced that there will be a monthly price. Closest they've said is that they're looking to do something different or flexible or tiered. I think it's still "up in the air" or they just don't want to drop the details yet.

With this being such an expensive project and WoW being such a money sink, I'm pretty sure you had better gamble ON monthly fees. F2P is for failing MMOs, not thriving ones.

Have you PLAYED Guild Wars? That is no MMO. MMO format does not equal MMO. It is primarily single player and instanced, and even that would require a fee if WoW numbers of players were to exist.

Oh I'm sure there will be some form of payment required. I'm just hoping it's not a ton.
And don't be hating on Guild Wars! I actually really liked that game back in the day. Sure it wasn't WoW quality, but people should seriously stop comparing everything to WoW. Nothing is going to live up to it and therefore everything sucks in comparison. I know it's the king of MMOs and all, but it's just annoying to hear people say every single MMO except for WoW sucks. Some do, but not all.

I have played a substantial amount of Guild Wars and it's just as much an MMO as WoW/Any other MMO you want to name. Just because it enables you to actually play the game without going out and forming huge parties doesn't mean it's any less of a massive multiplayer game.
As for WoW number of players meaning you need to have a subscription based service, 6.5 million sales disagree with you.

Yes it may not be as high as wow, but 6.5 million is more then most AAA console games sell and is not a number to be laughed at.

Assume that the game is a quarter as successful as WoW has been.
Ooops, that's still way more money than any console game has ever made. Gee, can't imagine why they'd want to have the next WoW instead of selling a few million discs.
PS, protip:just because there isn't a "III" after the name doesn't mean it isn't a continuation, a sequel if you will, to the popular series.

I wonder how long they'd have to maintain a 500,000+ playerbase before it becomes a "very profitable business."
A half a million to a million won't be hard for them to pull for the first couple months, but MMO success is never a sprint.
