Sega Sammy's financial results for the nine months ending December 31, 2010 showed marked upswings in overall sales and profit for the company. While the majority of money came through its pachinko and amusement arm, game publishing saw ¥67.4 billion ($826 million) in revenue and ¥2.8 billion ($34.3 million) in profit -- both notable increases since the company's last check-in.
Hidden among the many, many financial numbers was news that Platinum Games' fourth effort, Vanquish, had sold 820,000 copies since its release in late October, while Sonic Colors had moved a whopping 1,850,000 by the end of 2010. That's alotta hedgehog! The majority of the company's overall sales took place in Europe (owing to sales of Football Manager 2011), with the US following closely behind and Japan in a distant third.

seriously... i thought Heaven and Hell mode was ridiculous... and then i found out about Hell and Hell mode. enemies have 250% health and aggression, you have three lives to beat each level, and die in one hit. that's just nuts.

@akmdpc Not really. I'd have it if it weren't for the hidden trophy, which requires beating all the Tactical Challenges (the last couple are a real bitch to do). None of the others really gave me too much trouble, it's not like you have to beat the game on God Hard or anything.

The challenges are what make achieving the Platinum very difficult. Every other trophy is pretty simple and/or straight forward. I spent over three weeks playing NOTHING but Challenge 6 before finally beating it. Also broke a dualshock and my keyboard attachment out of frustration. Very expensive mistake.

This makes me happy. I was fearing Vanquish might not have sold even close to as many copies as it deserved. Perhaps we may see another one yet.

@Ninjasoup I was thinking less than 500k. I am encouraged by those numbers. Two bonafide hits for Platinum let's see some more!

@Ninjasoup - I was thinking Vanquish sold a lot less than the 820k. I was thinking maybe half a million.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed Vanquish - there was actually a decent length to the campaign as well - but I hadn't heard much of anyone buying it, nor my gamer friends putting much interest into it.
Glad to here it did well in sales. Let's hope it translates to a sequel, but not before Bayonetta 2:

Its great to see Vanquish selling as well as it did (at least to me it looks good). I absolutely loved the game and that pretty much solidified my resolve to buy pretty much anything Platinum puts out.

Kind of surprised that it doubled up Enlsaved though. I prefer Enslaved but they're both good games.

I'm loving Vanquish. It's like a rich dessert. I throw it in and get 10 minutes of bombastic wild gameplay and then walk away a happy man.
I don't anticipate a sequel but this will be one of those games that a few people look back on and they remember with distinct fondness.
If you haven't tried it, give it a shot.

I know what you mean... its crazy for the amount of awesomeness that is needed just to beat the last challenge (6) in that game. High octane from start to finish.... God I loved playing that game. Vanquish FTMFW baby!!

Good for them being a new IP and all .......but it deserves way more in sales. Kane and Lynch 2 sold 1m+...and that game is total shit in comparision to Vanquish.

madworld sold around 600k and was deemed a failure, wonder why :/
This will obviously sell more, it's that much more awesome too :P

Just imagine how many copies they would have sold if there were advertisements for it!?!?!?! That 800k+ is purely word of mouth.
Posted: Feb 7th 2011 11:18AM DoktorSleepless said
@Anticrawl Are you kidding me? I couldn't go anywhere online around Vanquish's release date without seeing an ad for it somewhere. I think what kinda put a damper on its sales was coming out on the same day as New Vegas.

I don't really count Gametrailers ads and blog postings on gaming blogs proper advertisement. Only a small percentage of gamers actually take time to look for and follow new games on the internet. They need commercials and posters bro, and to have had a less busy looking screenshot on the dashboard.

P* owns my soul. VANQUISH was absolutely amazing... you only see action that frenetically fast paced chaos in pre-planned cutscenes.
I can't believe people said BioWare was Studio of the Year 2010 due to releasing an awesome sequel to an established series when Platinum Games released two new IPs - one pushing the Action genre forward for the first time since DMC and the other putting you in the middle of absolute chaos - that were nothing short of amazing.

Hopefully, those numbers will encourage Sega to continue to put out good Sonic games like Colors.

Perhaps if all the little children stopped buying the same bloody games every year and took a chance on something different, Vanquish would get double those sales.

Vanquish is a great game. But it shows the slant in gaming priorities when the Sonic/Wii game sells a million more units yet isn't the focus of the article.
