These remakes/ports are perfect for new fans like me. It's almost a year to the day since I got into FF and JRPGs (took me long enough, I've had a PS1 since Crash Bandicoot 1 O_O).

@PS1
There's a perfectly good port of FF4 that came to DS a year or two ago that's worth playing.

I really want to love the old FF games, but ~20 years on I'm finding it hard to pour so much attention into the (now) cliche stories. Having said that, I'll have to get and play this just to preserve my cherished fanboy status.

This brings back the memory growing up playing SNES FFII & FFIII on that system.

Can't wait to play the visually enhanced versions. FFIV is one of my favorites

Funny that the more powerful handheld gets the worst looking FFIV port. After playing the wonderful DS port I don't think I can go back to the 2D FF ports (Dawn of Souls GBA, FF1 and 2 iOS). Which is even funnier considering, if they had done a good job, I'd be all over this since I play my PSP way more than my DS.
The PSP port does look dog awful I'm afraid.

You stole the words from my lips. Like everything else SE does lately, this is the pinnacle of the "lazy port." You may as well put an SNES emulator on your psp and run the original ROM. The only real benefit this has over the original is the after years add-on, and those are all kinda meh (total fan service).

I haven't played any Final Fantasy games and this trailer doesn't make any sense to me. So, uh, those two women have a baby girl and then years later that same girl (?) is on an airship and then a lot of stuff happens? It's a bold statement for LGBT parenting but other than that it's way too confusing to pique my interest. Is playing the first 3 games required to understand the story?

Just goes to show the people Square expects to want to play this game are the people that already have.
Now, to buy myself a PSP...

How many times FFIV has been re-released?
Don't get me wrong, this is one of my favorites, but why on earth FFVI doesn't get the same treatment?

Because that would make sense. And Square doesn't want to make sense, they want to make money. And if people will buy Final Fantasy 4 over and over and over again, then they'll keep putting it out.

@melao Let's see... After the localized the SNES version for the US, they re-issued in Japan as "easy-type" because the localization was so dumbed down. This was different than the US version slightly and had a different form of the final boss. That's 1. The PSX version - 2. The Wonderswan color version - 3. The GBA - 4. Japanese mobile release - 5. DS Remake - 6. This - 7. Not counting virtual console release. Oh and this is the third re-issue of after years.
The reason they re-release it so much is it is the first 'traditional' FF game which is more linear and story-focused. It's what made the series a hit in Japan (while FFVII is what made it a hit internationally).
But man, I'd love a remake of FFVI with 3D models based on Amano's designs like the PSX intro to FFVI had (Dissidia had them too but they had Nomorua influence which is barf). I want this more than FFVII remake. FFVII borrowed quite a bit from FFVI actually. Sephiroth infused with Jenova cells.... Kefka infused with magicite. Aeres theme even shares the first few notes with Celes' theme.

This is, what, the sixth rerelease of this game? And I've played every one of them. I even bought the ludicrously expensive mobile phone port that was FF4: The After Years for Wii. And we all know I'll end up buying this one as well, even if the additions are tiny, just for the small additions.
Damn you, FF4.

@Draco
I've played and finished it on the Wii. Yes, each characters' stories are only about 3 hours long, but there's plenty of worth in the secret dungeons, which you do have to train up for, and the final chapter alone lasted me well over 20 hours. It's quite a long game really, imo.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the DS version of FFIV graphically better than this PSP version? I played the game on the DS and I loved it for the new cinematic direction in the cutscenes, but this looks like a straight port from the SNES
Posted: Feb 6th 2011 3:16PM arrrdawg said
@Obyinlondon No you're right. But to be fair this version does not recycle the SNES sprites once more. It's re-drawn in the same style as FF1&2 anniversary editions with higher resolution artwork.
I don't know why they didn't just port the 3D models as is. The wider screen, higher resolution, and texture smoothing along with a better framerate would make FF4 DS even better on PSP. It's not like the touchscreeen added to the game or the 2nd screen was needed. At one time they were planning to port FF3 DS to PS2 in case the DS was a dud (it wasn't) so it's not like it would've been a technical challenge.
Then again, it wouldn't look very good for the game to transition from FF4 to after years going 3d to 2d because I doubt they'd want to render after years in 3d. It does look like the game will use the same CGI cut scenes as FF4 DS though. I would imagine it will use the updated music too, but probably not the voice acting.
FF4 DS gets a lot of hate for bad 3d graphics and slow gameplay but I suspect half the people who say that didn't even play through the game. The graphics are actually quite pleasent. I think the first airship scene had a bit of slowdown during the battle which is not present elsewhere in the game. People probably saw that and turned it off. The graphics and especially animations are great, the game runs slower but not THAT much slower and it's not a bad thing. It's not slow-down it just takes longer to do the same things as the 2D version. The re-mixed bosses and some enemies require actual strategy different that the prior versions and to me this is a great thing. I miss the addtions from the GBA game (which are present in the PSP version) but they were hacked into that game anyways and the augment system is nice.
I don't plan on buying this game, I won't feel bad pirating it for my PSP at all considering this will be the 5th version for me and the 2nd after years. No thanks Square, I've already paid you over $200 for these titles.

@harusame Even though they didn't show much regarding story, the trailer only shows (in CG) The After Years (by the way, what a dumb sarcasm regarding Cecil and his kid being women, although they do look like them, unfortunately)... The gameplay scenes do show stuff about each specific game...

er no just no stop porting basic ports and adding random crap.... a remake is fine if the gameplay has not been raped from it liek all the lunar games(and yes the PSX games suck). . .
