Valve knows where that money is, and they know exactly how to get at it: Give Team Fortress 2 players all the loot they could ever want, but wrap said loot in airtight, indestructible, pay-to-open containers. Is it dastardly? Oh, absolutely. Does it work? Let us turn to last week's Wrapup-winning webcomic, VG Cats' "Kinder Surprise," for the answer to that particular question.
Second and third place went to Penny Arcade's "Inner Wealth" and Dueling Analogs' "Welcome to ChatotRoulette," respectively. If you've got a strip you'd like to see in the next Wrapup, drop a link in the comments below, or send in a tip!

@Shadow Hog - Now don't spoil it for the fine folks who haven't seen a grown, naked ass man swimming in cash.

Let me point something out here for you though. What costs money in TF2 are hats and other little items that have little impact on the game. What they give out for free is: maps, game types, bosses(?!) and a medieval times game variant (era not the theme restaurant) all with promises of continued support.
So you don't play because...you want hats...but don't want to pay for them...and this annoys you.

Oi. I'm honestly a little tired of people hating on the TF2 item shop. The community was asking for it for a long time, and it's not like you have to actually spend money on anything. Besides, after getting a slew of amazing new content (added consistently for many years, nevertheless!) for free, adding in the fact that the game itself can be had for a song, I don't see how anyone can honestly complain about a completely optional method of getting items generally reserved for dedicated players who want specific items without slogging through crafting. Don't like it? Don't buy things. Blam. You win.

It's like what happened to WoW. The community asked for server transfers and faction/race changes forever, and when Blizzard added they suddenly became "greedy".
You can't please everyone, SPECIALLY on the internet.

@Enn I don't know if you were complaining at the comic or just gamers in general, but if it was the comic...I think he was just making a joke about how common it is to get a weapon you already have.
The same thing happened to me :(

@ShiroShishi Both. The corresponding blog to this comic was basically a giant rant about how "evil" Valve is, also taking digs at the treasure hunt event, another thing he clearly failed to comprehend, given that the wishlists were required so that even participating in the free challenges of the day could win you prizes. Once again - Don't like the event? DON'T PARTICIPATE. It's like magic!
I've gotten items I've already had too, and it is disappointing. So I trade them, or I craft them. When I get crates, which have the potential items listed in the description, if I don't like my odds, I'll save it and use it to trade later. Having the option to open them does not make the corporation evil. Grab-bags are fun, and trade-fodder is useful. Everyone wins.
Think of that whopping $2.50 you spent on that key as a tip to the company that continues to pour their heart and soul into the game you love, bringing you maps, tweaks, patches, game types, bosses, and more, building a community that's guaranteed not to lose interest when Call of Fortress: Sandvich Ops comes out next month. All without making you pay a dime. So if you wasted $2.50 on a Force-a-Nature, maybe that'll help make up for the the real time and real effort and real skill those artists and designers put into those new maps that you didn't pay a cent for.
I love Valve. They care a lot more about you and I than most corporations, and if you don't buy something as touchy-feely as that, they sure as hell have given us more content and merriment for free.

VGCat is consistently the worst thing I've ever seen. Are they racing to see how many panels they can possibly make to tell what good humorists can in 3 panels?

I think it was a greed joke.?
That being said, Valve is just about getting on my nerves lately. (for various little stupid reasons)

I think the large amount of panels actually added to the "experience". It really made you intrigued, excited, disappointed, then the punch line came in. With 4 panels most of what made that comic work would be thrown away and leave the viewer with a generic, soulless shell, kinda like the food they make on the show "4 ingredients".

Maybe someone should make a money vault joke about the artist of VGCats making bank on merch while only updating every few months with a dated and poorly constructed joke. Ho hum.
